My favorite band <3 They had a criminally small crowd.
Such mixed feelings on that. Bummed they didn't draw better, but it absolutely gave the set a more intimate feel, which works like gangbusters for that particular band.

Day 3 in the books! I think yesterday was slightly better, but only just. I didnt get in until much later than I planned thanks to the break-in - nothing was stolen, thankfully, but we couldn't crash until after the cops came and we once again had a functional door. Good times.
ANYWAY. So, my first set was CRX, and I was kind of meh on them. But I'm glad, kinda, because things only took off from there. Split St. Paul and Broods, then caught Foster the People, which I didn't figure I'd enjoy as much as I did. After that, it was killer set after killer set: BSS, Nas (a tough call over Weezer but, c'mon, it's Nas in Queens), Sleigh Bells (who tore it the fuck up), and finishing with the first 15 minutes of Bassnectar and then the Chilis. That's just a hell of a day.
Agreed on the need for venue improvements, but overall, I think this festival killed it.
Man, this was a great festival. It felt like part Rock The Bells revival (but like, competent), part indie rock assembly, largely bucking the trendy 2017 fest bookings. Obviously the headliners were more by the numbers, but pulling Jay-Z in NYC and all those guests for the Gorillaz made it special.
And speaking of guests, the special appearances at sets like LL, Broken Social Scene and Future were beyond anything I would have expected coming in. Probably topped Coachella's collaborations this year in my book.
There's definitely some logistical shit that needs to get sorted (for example, they tried to confiscate my girlfriend's extremely valid license in VIP today and were initially complete dicks about it, making me search out a cop to confirm it was legit). Like everyone, I would love some grass and shade as that blacktop is brutal in the sun, but the foundations of a stellar festival are very much present.
Hopefully we get to see what they can do in 2018.
Who were the guests at BSS? Edit: just saw Emily Haines performed a few songs with them, that's great.

There were members of Stars with them as well. A real Canadian indie love fest up there.
This was a really fun time. One thing that I think was super underrated was that you could get from stage to stage in such a short amount of time. Before Gorillaz, I was able to catch songs from TV on the Radio, Tory Lanez, AND MIA, and I still got back for a good spot for Gorillaz. Also, virtually no sound bleed. I like festivals with Grass a lot more generally than pavement, but for city fests where you need a lot of conflicts I have a hard time seeing how you could do much better staging wise than the set up they had, if you want people to be able to see a lot of acts. My biggest wish is that music went until 11 and not 10, but thats life.
Had a blast yesterday. Sleigh Bells were excellent and Weezer was also a lot of fun. Chili Peppers were dependable headliners but it WAS super cool that they busted out "Aeroplane".

How has no one mentioned the sound issues at Weezer? Seemed like a speaker was blown and it took the production crew a surprisingly long time to "fix" the problem. Their solution was to just turn down the volume to the point of disrespect. All in all I had a phenomenal time at this festival but that was a big hit against.

It was super obvious at the beginning but I thought they fixed it pretty quick after a song or two. Maybe I was just enjoying Weezer too much to know anymore but i was right under it.

I was at Nas (hardest conflict of the weekend for me), so I missed this. I had been wondering if being the only rock act on that stage yesterday was going to cause issues. Really unfortunate because I thought the sound was consistently top notch this weekend.

In terms of overall experience, here's my official ranking of the 15 sets I saw, from least-favorite to favorite. NOTES: 1) I only went Day 2 and Day 3, so, obviously, nothing from Day 1 is on here - definitely bummed I missed RTJ and Sky Ferreira. 2) "Least-favorite" is relative, as I didn't really have a bad time at any of these shows. 3) I caught the first 20 minutes of Bassnectar and dug it, but I didn't figure that was enough to make for a full evaluation, so I left it off the list. It was a pretty boss 20 minutes, though.
Here goes...
15. CRX 14. St. Paul and the Broken Bones 13. Broods 12. Jacob Banks 11. Flatbush Zombies 10. Foster the People 9. De La Soul 8. Antibalas 7. Nas 6. Red Hot Chili Peppers 5. Broken Social Scene 4. LL Cool J 3. Gorillaz 2. Sleigh Bells 1. TV on the Radio
Everyone ranking sleigh bells so high is making me regret my decision to go get loaded waffle fries
Ha! I feel you: I missed their set at GovBall 2014 because I was waiting in the eternal line for a CoolHaus ice cream sandwich, which I'd heard were amazing. Long story short, I regretted missing their show a lot more than I enjoyed that ice cream sandwich. I was determined to see them this year as a redemption type of thing.
