if i was going to be in town 5/2 i would consider going that day
It's a cool little place in the middle of the hood in Central City. BBQ is fairly top notch for the city. I actually like days 1 and 3 better. Good Enough for Good Times is part of Galactic which was a post Katrina side project when musicians were spread thin. Dark Matter is great though they have fluctuated members and styles. Corey Henry's Treme Funktet is Rebirth Brass Band's leader's side funk project that includes Bru Bruiser who played bass with Gravity A for a couple of years. That band gets down. I have to work all those days but am taking off Thursday of that week for Jazz Fest.
1st Saturday - Karl Denson's Tiny Universe 2am Saturday morning (late night Friday) Tipitina's. This sucks. There's probably no way I can get down to Tip's from Joy after STS9. I love KDTU and particularly guitarist DJ Williams.
David Shaw (Revivalists) Solo Acoustic set House of Blues 1st Saturday
Thursday (2nd week) - Lettuce, Marco Benevento Trio, DJ Soul Sister, Rashawn Ross @ The Joy 10:00

You're right. I'm going to moe. though that night, so it's the same same difference. Joy and Civic are like 4 blocks away from each other. Tip's is uptown at Napoleon and Tchoupitoulas. It's the same difference but my error.
Nothing to do with JazzFest, but I urge any music fans in NOLA to hit up the Dave Chappelle Juke Joint party tomorrow night. I went to the one in Toronto last year and it was one of the coolest nights of my life. Essentially, Chappelle rents out some club or space, starts with a DJ Nice set around midnight and then at about 2AM, Dave and the most all-star band you could think of come out to do a set of covers mixed with comedy. Last year the show went until 5AM, had an open bar, and even Usher and Kardinal Offishall showed up for a couple songs. By the end of the night, Chappelle was loaded, and was grooving in the crowd with the 20 of us left. I got passed a joint by Dave fuckin Chappelle. And what a joint it was. What a night.
Anyway, it's an expensive ticket, but GO!!! Can only imagine what kinda crazy guests will show up when this hits New Orleans!
That's another 78 dollars I didn't need to spend this month. But I will certainly be there now that I spent it.
Hell yeah!!! Trust me, you will not regret it. I want a full report the morning after! Or, more appropriately, two days after. You will most likely need at least 24 hours to recover.

Haha yeah. Whatever I can remember. At Jack Daniel's No. 7 free house party and am hitting the single barrel. Tomorrow with work at 8 am, looking after my dad for a few hours and then all night. Fuck. My boy Tom wants me to march in Chewbacchus on Satirday. Told him no fm dice. \m/

Late night 2nd Friday is so crazy stacked. Orpheum just added Karl Denson with white denim opening to the battle with funky meters, Bayou Rendezvous, basin street records anniversary party, worship my organ... meanwhile I'm not psyched about anything going on before 3am on saturday

Complete greatness. I drove to the dropoff area, so I had the choice of behaving and driving back home or sleeping on my truck downtown. I decided to go semi low key so I could get back home. Party was at Bayou Barn in Lafitte which is a Cajun/Bayou theme event center. It was total A List. Haha. There was everybody from Chance the Rapper to Hannibal Burress to the president of ESPN. We saw T-Mac, and Dave gave a shout out to C Webb and somebody from the Blazers. He brought Michael Che up and called out Chris Tucker a few times. There were lots of other people you knew were somebody, but everyone was just hanging out partying. No Name Band was great. MCs and DJ's were great. Chance, Vince Staples, Jarobi, Kardinal Offishall, Estelle and Benny Bloom from Lettuce came up. They had a street brass band join on stage. Chance came out a couple of times and did a duet of American Boy with Estelle. He did You don't want no problems among other songs, raps an some free styles. She sang Smells like Teen Spirit and I'll Take You There. Dave did a tribute to Roberta Flack who he said he just met a few weeks ago, and when he introduced himself, she busted out crying which was mind blowing to him. Because apparently his dad dated her one time and had told him that (but she won't remember me). Obviously she did. He also did a kareoke with the band of Creep by Radiohead.
There's a ton of shit Im leaving out and forgetting. But the whole trip was a modern riff on the old juke joints where black people had fun when it was illegal for them to have fun. So you get transported to that element of celebration with food and booze and whatever. I said what's up to Chance, Bloom and McGrady.
On the walk back to my truck about an hour ago we saw some Baller Alert stickers. Jeezy is playing tomorrow and Birdman is doing an rsvp show with Mannie Fresh and also on that bill is Jay Electronica and then Raekwon and Ghostface as Hot Ones. It's liable to continue to be a long ass weekend, and thanks again for the recommendation. It wi probably end up being top 3 shows for me this year. Dave Chappelle knows what the fuck he's doing in that type of environment and even said he was paying extra to keep that bitch open for a few more songs. \m/
Oh man esteban so glad it lived up to the hype!!! Great rundown and sweet article too. How good is Freddy Yonnet on the harp?! Wish I coulda been there! Will never, EVER miss one of these when I have the chance!

Yeah. He was awesome. The whole band was great -the drummer, horns, guitarist and they had Robert Glasper play some of the keys. It was about as cool of an overnight party as you could come up with. I won't miss another juke jive if I'm ever around somewhere he does it. Again man, great recommendation, probably best one I ever got on this site.
Walter Wolfman Washington and The Roadmasters - 1st Sunday Little Gem
John Medeski's Skillet featuring Kirk Joseph, Terrence Higgins and Will Bernard - Wednesday Little Gem
Future, A$AP Ferg, Kodak Black, Zoey Dollaz and Torey Lanez - 2nd Saturday Champions Square
Helen Gillet - 2nd Friday Circle Bar

Sinkane is really great. sad to miss that. Since this is technically a bonnaroo board y'all might know him/them as the leader of the now infamous Who is William Onyeabor set.

How do you know when these happen? Do you have to follow him or someone within 7 degrees?

Seems to at least have been associated with NBA All Star weekend. Just saw Big Tymers for free. Thanks Obama.

Following Yonnet and/or DJ Nice on Instagram seems to do the trick. They're usually the only ones doing the promoting, though it seems like they only do a couple per year.

Blue Nile is a pretty bad ass bar. I like the upstairs/balcony room best, but they closed it down in 14 or 15 for extensive renovations. I think the last time I was there was for Break Science live band last Jazz Fest. We used to go pretty regularly when Gravity A did their weekly residency in 2011-2013.
