My friend "GS" said rumor is Phish is taking up residence in NY this summer and if so, he will bring his wife and little babies to NYC for 2 weeks in the summer. He's been a Phish head since the late 80s and probably has seen them 50-100 times or more. I'm not sure what he means by taking up residency but I assume it means they will do a fuckload of shows there.
there have been two rumors floating around:
1. fish has to have surgery, so no shows between mexico in january and dicks over labor day
2. phish is doing a residency at MSG this summer
i trust the people saying the MSG thing is bullshit and there will be no phish shows this summer until dicks at the earliest. and this seems to be confirmed by the festival shows trey and mike bands have booked through june. its a bummer but it means the dicks shows are gunna be crazy town. not sure how they can top sunday at dicks last year but they always manage to surprise me.

Damn, that'd be the crunchiest jazzfest since the early 00's.

I'd take a day off work to catch Dead & Co for sure. I wouldn't take a day off work specifically for Panic, TAB, Meters, but I'd drive over to catch them on a Saturday or Sunday.

Wait... is this real? I might have to plan some time off if it is. Not sure what "PT" is

PT = Phantasy Tour, a message board for drug bands. Also one of the best and worst places on the internet. Lots of scoopz there but lots of bullshitters too, so when sarge says "per PT" he means "take with a grain of salt".
Having said that, all those names make sense, I can't think of anything that would rule those acts out.
For real ! That whole list and I'm only interested in snoop and the shakes.
Nas, Trey Band, Sir Paul, Dead and Co. and Snoop for me. Obviously Snoop and Stevie Wonder are suspect because they were billed for the second Saturday last year that got rained out. Snoop did DJ Snoopadelic later that night at a venue in the hood. I'm sure you can guess how that went. Haha.
For what it's worth, the folks at PT had the correct lineup a few weeks early last year too. Looks pretty legit. I think I'll head to the Fairgrounds now to secure a spot within a mile of the stage for McCartney.

Yeah man. That's going to be a major clusterfuck of a day, easily the worst in years. But it's probably a near last chance to see him. So whatever the bullshit required, I'll gut it. I'm real happy with Nas. He was Nas-level when he did Illmatic live. You coming get down this year man?
Word is that Tribe is doing 2 nights downtown, but I'm not sure of the dates or venue yet. STS9 is now pretty much become mandatory for me. So wherever and whichever the days, even if middle of the week, I will be there. Hopefully it won't conflict with moe. nights. Got my fingers crossed it's a legit rumor.

How many times have you seen them? I remember reading in the Voodoo thread that you dug that set, and I got the impression you hadn't seen them in a while. Funny enough, I think I've seen Sound Tribe more than any other band ever. I'm not really sure how many times but somewhere in the teens. They keep getting better and better. Back to back nights would be 4 sets and very few repeats.
Since they usually play The Joy Theater, If it's going to be a weekend and if ends up being the Joy, it would be first Saturday and Sunday. Cross your fingers, and I'll see you there.

I definitely think they stepped it up/were reinvigorated when the change on bass happened.
I like both versions, though I didn't really know Murphy that much the first couple of times I saw them play with him. He popped up Jazz Fest 2013 after fest superjam on a riverboat with Krasno, Stubblefiled, Lali, Hartswick, Glaspie, etc. he was great at that, but I haven't seen him since and don't know what he's up to.
I think Alana turned them back toward the having fun side of the band and less serious/conflicted side. Anyway their live shows since have been great and are occasionally Top 1 for me at a given fest (Hangout 14, Bonnaroo 15, Euphoria 16) but not always. But I don't ever not have a great and appreciative time seeing them.
Fwiw RZA just got his arms chopped off on The Man With the Iron Fists by Tarantino. I didn't even know that movie existed.

I haven't seen them a bunch, but I saw them at Roo 03, the LN set when Mike Gordon sat in. And at one other random fest around that time. I wore out that Seasons live album. Saw them again with Murph several years later in Alpharetta, with Bisco and Big Boi opening. Caught a bit of the 2015 Roo show, so really Voodoo was the first full Alana STS9 set I've seen, and I was really really impressed. Love that it feels throwback to early Seasons-esque STS9 but more fun and even a bit deep housey. Can't wait to catch them again.
JF is shaping up to be the best in years, for my personal music taste.
From the brief history I learned regarding Murphy, he was the one that led the more techni, less funky/jammy sound that it seemed fan weren't digging for a bit. I think Alana brought em back to their roots

Yeah. Considering there are at least 150 Night shows to announce and hundreds of festival acts, it's looking like probably the best two weekends in music this year for me. It's always great, but 2017 could well be over the top.
I've never seen Tribe Pre Alana either. Sound Tribe pretty much blew open the door for me musically.
Edit: first band to ever really fuck up my view in music was Gogol Bordello. I watched them performed on Conan and thought that was some of the dumbest shit I've ever seen (Start Wearing Purple). The next day, I just needed to hear that song again, and later that evening nought tix for my brother and I to see them am the Troc in Philly. They're up there with STS9, Ozo and Mutemath for most repeated acts I've seen. (Around 5-8 times).
U2 announced a US stadium tour that starts right after Jazz Fest. I wonder if they pull them this year? Closest stop to New Orleans is Houston.
I doubt it. There have been some rumors but no mention of U2. Also in their tour announcement they stated Bonnaroo would be their first US festival appearance ever.

That would be great. But since they usually put on a visuals show which is tough to do at Jazz Fest because it's daytime, I would hope maybe for them to close Voodoo Sunday. That would be up with my most anticipated and probably top shows of the year. Maybe I'll get lucky, and they'll stream the Bonnaroo set.

I really hope they don't play Voodoo. I am also hoping that Green Day who's tour has no New Orleans dates aren't on JazzFest or the make up Voodoo appearance, since it the tour ends on Sept 13 now.
Do you not like U2 or have seen them too many times or something? They get a lot of hate on the internets, particularly since the free iTunes album. One of my kids' friend's GF's was telling me how much they sucked. But she was just groupthink mad because her Facebook friends were just re-parroting b.s. from the web because she wouldn't know U2 from Led Zeppelin.
But you don't have ignorant musical tastes which is why I'm curious. It would be on Show of the Year level and probably elbowing Paul McCartney at Jazz Fest for top for me - particularly if they mix in earlier stuff with the Lanois/Eno albums (Unforgettable Fire, Joshua Tree and All That You Can't Leave Behind). I don't mind all of "The Fly"/Europa/Zooropa stuff, but I'm definitely less of a fan of that than the earlier stuff and ATYCLB.
Edit to say I'm with you on Green Day, but it seems like even money that we are going to get them. I'd watch from the back provided there wasn't a conflicting EDM set I would rather be at.
