EDIT: they don't track daily attendance anymore, so we can't know for sure if this number was ever topped. but we all know the crowds at Acura can be nightmarish for the biggest names.

I was 6.5 months pregnant at the fest that year. I had my shirts tied in knots above my brekky it was so hot. That was the first time I threatened not to go again because it was so obvious they had outgrew the fairgrounds.
Edit: I'm thinking of 1998 not the second time in 2001.
I really hope they bring Pharaoh Sanders back this year, he's the #1 jazz bucketlist musician left for me. Would obv like to see Sonny Rollins as well.
The Jazz Fest Facebook page started posted events and buy ticket package links. Maybe we get a lineup drop today?
IDK. Says tickets are $70 but no date or time. That will mean probably $81 with dick fees. There is a hotel "flash sale" with prices good through 1/31/17. I think they usually say when they are going to release rather than just dropping it. But it can't be much longer with only 3 months until the festival.

Aren't we supposedly getting the lineup today? Or was that just a rumor?
Dead Feat - Performing Grateful Dead, Little Feat, Anders & More just added John Kadleck of Further (Paul Barrere & Fred Tackett of Little Feat, Jackie Green, Anders, Brady Blade & Carl Dufrene) <--- These had been announced for 4/29 and 4/30 (4/29 - Midnight North, 4/30 Sockeye featuring Leftover Salmon Members)
Tickets are on sale and sold out at Civic in 2015 which probably is 1000 seats smaller. Presale is MASHER. Public Access TV is opening, and tickets are 34.50 to 79.50 plus applicable ahole fees.

I'm guessing they didn't get Paul. So many lineups this year are such trash I'm really trying to keep my expectations low
Yeah it feels like no Paul, no Dead & Co. Totally possible the top names are Stevie Wonder / Tom Petty / KoL, which wouldn't look great.
Having said that, if I could manage a schedule where I get to see Petty, Trey, Panic, Dave & Tim, and The Meters on the fairgrounds, I'd have a good time.
From how y'all have described the BNA crowds I would be perfectly happy with bummer headliners since I know the undercard will be fun
Don't be fooled thinking that Tom Petty won't be just as packed. The last time he played I couldn't even get into the grass area. I was on the outside of the track.
EDIT: Stevie Wonder will be just as packed also. And on the Acura stage.

That makes sense. I guess I meant more like if it's kings of Leon I can just leave

Tom Petty was 2012 right? I don't remember us having any difficulty with that crowd. I can't find the cubes for that year, it's possible we'd just been camping there for a while and so didn't notice the crowd. We were posted up in the back behind "the ditch" which is where we usually end up. I remember having lots of room to move and whatnot.

You can definitely have a fun day camping at Acura all day if there is a headliner you really want to see. Typically the Acura stage lineups are pretty great, you'll typically get a good dose of "big" new orleans talent before the headliner. Some zydeco, some brass band, then something like Jon Cleary or Dr. John or whatever incarnation the Meters are in that year. You just need to have your group setup camp and take turns doing field trips for food and drink.
But to me it's just more fun to walk around and take it all in. I'd hate to have a jazzfest where I didn't take a trip to the jazz or gospel tent, or spend some time at the Jazz and Heritage stage or the fast doo doo stage. The Lagniappe stage can be a great place to chill out too, we saw the Mulligan Brothers there a few years ago and it was great sitting in a chair in the shade and enjoying some great music. Congo Square is fun too, and is a pretty good field with good sound.

I usually end up at Gentilly, more times than not, the artist I want to see are usually on that stage. There are occurrences where that is not the case and I usually wander during the day, I just try usually not go to Acura unless I have to. I think it was 2012 or 2011 I don't remember which, but what I do know is I was at the Gentilly stage all day until 15 mins before Tom Petty and we couldn't get off the track at all. It was pretty freaking packed. He sounded great from back there though. LOL
LMFAO. Tell me that's an autocorrect for fais do do! hahahahaha The older you get the less fast doo doo... ------- I run around all day. Often I have friends that camp all day at Acura, so I can just find them at some point and post up for the bigger shows. But there's too much greatness all over the FG's to miss the other main stages and smaller stages. Last year I saw some cool brass at Economy Hall, T-Ray the Violinist (and his band) covering Jean Luc Ponty at Jazz & Heritage Stage; big rap acts at Congo Square (Janelle Monae, J. Cole, Ms. Lauryn Hill); a few bands at Gentilly, Jazz Tent, Blues Tent and even a fantastic set at Lagniappe Stage in the racehorse paddock. The only stage I didn't visit was the one upstairs in the grandstands. I've never been up there (obviously we go up there all the time when we're betting on horses, but I mean jazzfest).
Also, lineup is blocked. I tried to get to it, and it wants a user name and password. Sadly I don't have that.

when we first started going I didn't know how to pronounce fais do do, and since i have the sense of humor of a child i started calling it fast doo doo.
and i forgot about the Economy Hall tent, it's awesome seeing some trad jazz there and watching everyone dance. definitely the kind of shit you don't see at other festivals.
