Off topic question: Does anyone think Pitchfork artificially rates some albums higher because of this fest? Or do you think they booked those acts after liking their albums? For example, as a midwesterner I do not think Solange is a headliner. Most people who know her know her as Beyoncé's sister. Wouldn't you put it past Pitchfork to give that album of the year in order to sell tix. Just posing a question here, not attacking Solange. I also understand P4k is a small fest so they can have borderline headliners
I've always wanted to conduct a study on this. It definitely looks like the artists who play their fests receive BNM, but they're a few exceptions (notably Frances and the Lights this year).
I think having the right PR team and playing certain shows, including their festivals, can be the difference between a 7.8 and an 8.2/BNM. I think in the case of Solange this very easily could be part of the deal.

Well they gave #1 to Kendrick the year before and he didnt get booked, Miguel, Sufjan, Kamasi were in the Top 10 albums of '15 and they booked all three. Miguel is probably the only one who arguably shouldn't be in that top 10, maybe you could argue the Solange thing here, but I think with Sufjan if you get the op to book that you do it, idk how much of that is Pitchforks taste making, and with Kamasi that album was great and he did a bunch of fests. It'd be interesting to see a whole data set on Recent Album Score/BNM v. End of Year List v. Billing. But Spin had Solange at #1 end of year, and Time had her at #2, so maybe its just about booking the cool shit that middle america doesn't know as opposed to big poppy acts, because that's what Lolla's for.

Side note, Vince is sounding great rn.
Well, it's complicated. I would say that the same engine driving Spin and Time is driving Pitchfork, essentially. It's not so much if you have the opportunity to book Sufjan you do it, but more that they have that opportunity thanks to their industry clout and the outsized power of BNM.
There's nothing particularly surprising about them booking folks that they have highly rated. You could chalk it up to consistency in taste. At the same time, it's worth considering that there may be some stuff going on behind the scenes and certain acts might be getting propped up for whatever reason. That has probably always been true, even before the Conde Nast acquisition.
Whether anyone should care, I can't say. It's up to the individual.
For sure. I saw him when it came out and other times but I don't know his material enough to answer the question. You should be able to watch it at any point on that channels stream for day 1 (blue stage). here's the direct link to Pitchfork's coverage. Vince is 1st (after about 10 minutes but you can scroll the video).
He's really come a long way. I enjoyed his and what I saw of Vince's set. Now I'm just waiting on a broke ass Friday for Disco Biscuits to come on from Bisco at 8:30. It's a night set, and they had everything from their inimitable lasers to a holograph-type projection of an astronaut on the ceiling last night in Set 1. I missed the daytime set today, but I'm going to catch #3 tonight for sure.
I'm exhausted just from watching Danny Brown at home. His set is flawless
This was my biggest impression from yesterday. Vince was good, and LCD were fantastic as expected, but Danny was so impressive. No vocal track help at all, and he never missed a beat. And he sounded great to boot. What a set.
I bought a 3 day pass thinking I could do all of them, but I have too much going on at home. I'm not going today or tomorrow. If anyone in the area would like to use my pass for the rest of the weekend, I'll email you the pdf.
For anyone heading in today I expect lines to be a lot shorter to get in. I was working the gates and it was a mess yesterday. Festival organizers wanted things set up a certain way and when lines reached the L the head of security put her foot down and did things her way which was much better. As far as drunk tickets go, there is another booth selling them by the blue stage and another set of bathrooms. When the line was an hour long for drink tickets by the main entersnce there was no line over there, and no line for the porto's.
Great day yesterday. Only my second time doing pitchfork (first was 2015) but this or Osheaga is my favorite festival, hands down. Favorite three sets of yesterday were:
1 | LCD Soundsystem (duh) 2 | Dawn Richard 3 | Priests
setlistvulture and I were bummed we couldn't see Arca, but getting a good spot for LCD Soundsystem was of utmost importance. Caught the Cherry Glazerr after show at Schuba's - a lot of fun, even with a rowdy and heavily inebriated crowd. Their set today is going to be great.
I'll be wearing red nikes and a drawstring bag with the Tidal logo on it. setlistvulture will have an orange draw string bag and will be wearing a Staves hat. Say hi if you see either of us!

Unsurprisingly LCD was insane, but I'm suprised no one's mentioned how great Dirty Projectors sounded. That moment when they took the live sample on Impregnable Question to transition into Keep Your Name was a stunner
