How is the right question. How did Bonnaroo let this happen? How are they getting beat by fests that are half their size?
In that regard you could flip it to how does a coastal festival in the Northeast only manage to get tired old Mumford, a rapper with one album, and a controversially liked/disliked Tool as their headliners? Add conflicts and you maybe see a lucky what? 15 sets all weekend?
And those 15 sets is more then what I want to see at bonnaroo this year. Of the announced festivals so far when you factor in quality and cost bonnaroo is the worst. And honestly it's not close for me. I honestly never thought I would get to the point I would have literally zero desire to attend Bonnaroo. This would of been my 10th year in a row but honestly even if I had a free ticket I'm not sure the other expenses are worth it this year.
"The album topped iTunes electronic album chart on the first day.[8] As of 30 July 2016, the album is twelfth on the chart.[9] Two singles were released from the album, titled "Keep It Mello" featuring rapper Omar LinX and "Want U 2".[10] The album peaked number five on Billboard's electronic/dance albums chart.[11]"
He has worked with Skrillex and Tiesto, 2 of the biggest names in the genre. The Marshmallow guy is going to be headlining shit in a few years as his fanbase grows, and it will be awesome for kids to remember when they saw him the first time in a small tent at Bonnaroo, like I have done for bands of the genres I enjoy.
He's a product of marketing. He used to be dotcom and didn't make a splash so he copped a schtick from deadmau5. He's a flavor of the week type booking that five years from now no one will give a shit about. Ya know, like Tiesto.
To be clear, I agree with your assessment of Marshmello, and enjoy nothing Tiesto does these days, but I don't think it's fair to equate Tiesto with Marshmello and refer to him as a flavor of the week. For better or worse, Tiesto has been a big name in electronic music since the mid-90s. He's been plugging away at this for a while, so I guess that's worth something, even if his recent output is the same pop EDM garbage everyone else is doing.
That was like my weakest defense of an artist ever, but I feel like I needed to say it.

In that regard you could flip it to how does one of the major festivals in North America only manage to get tired old RHCP, The same rapper Boston Calling got (With 2 highly regarded mixtapes btw), and a controversially liked/disliked U2 as their headliners. Also 15-20 sets is usually the amount of sets I see in a weekend at Bonnaroo anyways so that's fine with me

And the Daft Punk fans said the same thing about Mau5 when he came about and he's been going longer than a decade. Chance is headlining this festival and the dude just got hot less than a year ago.
You keep harping on Chance. He's on the top line at Roo too. And frankly one of the few good things bonnaroo has. You may like or even love this lineup and that's great. Enjoy yourself when you go. But your in the minority. I find it unlikely you're gonna change opinions here

I'll give you Mumford. Other than that you're completely wrong.
Have any of you actually seen Tool in the last 3-4 years? You're kidding yourselves if you think Maynard's voice is even 1/10th what it was, find me a live video in the past 3-4 years where he has sounded good. He doesn't hit any of those notes anymore and the standing in the back of the stage schtick is old compared to the fact that he doesn't feel the need to do that with Puscifer or APC.

I wasn't really trying to equate tiesto with marshmello as far as flavor of the week. Just more that people don't give a shiz about tiesto anymore. I don't feel cool saying I saw tiesto at a tent at bonnaroo in '08, for example, and I doubt 5 years from now the kids are going to give a shiz about seeing marshmello in some tent at bonnaroo (though with where he is billed, I wouldn't be surprised to see him on the which, unfortunately).

gotcha, that makes sense.
but don't knock tiesto again or i'll come at you bro.

Rhcp are due in any regard after 4 years away and a new album. Tool is not in U2s tier, and chance isnt "headlining" Roo. I'm usually over 30 acts on a good lineup for Roo but those days are gone it seems.
Quality over Quantity. Considering the size and history of Bonnaroo we shouldn't even be having this discussion. But Bonnaroo decided to book something called Marshmello on their third line

I think I'm going to Mamby on the Beach this year. The lineup isn't out yet but the past 2 years lineups have absolutely out classes the Bonnaroo lineup leaps and bounds.

Harping on chance more so for the marshmello 3rd line issue, not his actual output of work. And I was really just interested how 3 days no camping with normal festival acts beats a 4 night 150+ act fest in peoples eyes when the overlap of artist, past and present, is so great.

Tonight on Tales from the Twilight Zone: a phish fan fights a deadhead to defend tiesto's honor.

You can't take past overlap into account. That be like saying 'Festival X' has Paul McCartney, Radiohead, Phish and Jay-Z on the top line but since Bonnaroo has had all them in the past it's not as impressive. And as others pointed out this years cross over is lots of Roos highlights. As far as no camping. Some people that is a huge factor. Other people it's not. They are just considered about the lineup.

I've seen Tool 3 times in the past couple of years, you're definitely wrong. True his voice isn't the same as it was 20 years ago (whose is?). But to say it's 10% of what it was is laughable.
He's been standing in the back since Laterals days, I don't see that ever changing, get used to it.
And he actually enjoys Puscifer, so that's what you should see if you want to worship at the MJK alter. Go see Tool because they put on a hell of a show.

they're still the best band in the world so it doesn't matter
Are people seriously defending Marshmello now? Seriously?
Even AC himself didn't defend Marshmello. In the COS interview he laughed (and they even wrote "laughs" in brackets to call this out!!!!) and called it "good fun". This is the guy #11 on the poster.

I'm just trying to hold off on the "this music is shit"'s and "get off my lawn"'s for a few more years.
Sure, but sometimes there are artists so bad that I can't fathom how they're defended.
Marshmello is leagues away from deadmau5, Daft Punk, Bloody Beetroots, MF DOOM and other "anonymous" musicians because he's so clearly a marketing gimmick. In the case of every other musician I named, it's apparent they have or have had a vision for their music.
In the case of Marshmello, it's clear that OWSLA decided to jump on the anonymous producer bandwagon and conjure up this nonsense. His songs are all over the place (future bass, trap, whatever the hell else) while his sets are the typical turn-up/drop-rinse-and-repeat drop sets guys like Flosstradamus, Diplo, etc. are known for time and time again. I've heard various rumblings they just snag a ghost producer or team of ghost producers to make a song, then they enlisted nobody Dotcom to wear the silly get-up and press play.
It's all a marketing gimmick and it admittedly works. But, is it good? God no. We've got the EDM Milli Vanilli right before our eyes.

That makes sense. Basically Boston Calling weeded out all the bullshit that one would have to deal with both in artist playing and logistics going to Roo. Why pay more for more artist when you arnt gonna see them anyway kinda thing.
And yes vibes aren't quantifiable yada yada but I enjoy camping the whole weekend in a pretty far out place with thousands doing the same and that environment I really enjoy. Maybe I'll need to trek to summer camp or something sometime. Love Boston calling's lineup but the camping at festivals is a lot of the fun for me, second to the entertainment of course.

Damnit. Marshmello was an example. I don't want that fucknuts on our lineup, but I didn't want Trump in our Whitehouse either. I guess there are just stupid people out there who like money grabbing assholes with stupid shit attached to their heads.

Because even bookers know he is horrible. But college kids like him; and bad EDM in general. They are the primary demographic being targetted. It is a business at the end of the day.

Because Boston Calling is in a fun city and Bonnaroo is in the middle of fucking nowhere. I'd take a lineup like BC over Bonnaroo because it's dense with artists I want to see. That makes it less likely I'll have to kill time waiting for something I'm interested to come on.
edit: I see now that you basically just responded to this same sentiment so carry on and ignore me.

to continue on this, if people think bonnaroo failed, check the crowd at the edm stage a lolla. they're going to have to change something at roo to accommodate for that. i don't know if hot TN will attract as many as lolla just because of the logistics, very interested to see what will actually happen on the farm this year. they could either not attract the edm crowd like they had hoped, or the could get so many of them that they don't have space for people to be able to see the act even

Why do you keep harping on this as if we don't all already know why they booked these acts?
