Because even bookers know he is horrible. But college kids like him; and bad EDM in general. They are the primary demographic being targetted. It is a business at the end of the day.
Why do you keep harping on this as if we don't all already know why they booked these acts?
probably because everybody keeps bitching about it
Even AC himself didn't defend Marshmello. In the COS interview he laughed (and they even wrote "laughs" in brackets to call this out!!!!) and called it "good fun". This is the guy #11 on the poster.

Oh I know. But the fact that AC couldn't care to even give a lipservice PR defense (ie "Mr. Melo has been making some of the most exciting music of 2016 and we're delighted to get him") says a lot.
I get that the CappDogg has gotten paid and doesn't need to maintain a facade but he literally laughed at the booking. Not figuratively, but literally. As in they wrote - (LAUGHS). Doesn't that sum up the fest at this point?

to continue on this, if people think bonnaroo failed, check the crowd at the edm stage a lolla. they're going to have to change something at roo to accommodate for that. i don't know if hot TN will attract as many as lolla just because of the logistics, very interested to see what will actually happen on the farm this year. they could either not attract the edm crowd like they had hoped, or the could get so many of them that they don't have space for people to be able to see the act even
I think this is the thing. Ya, these acts are popular, and ya Lolla crams Perry's full of them. But based on ticket sales through 2015, it doesn't seem like Bonnaroo needed to become Lolla - TN, but they went and did it anyway. That's why people are pissed.
I'm not making some moral judgement about Bonnaroo booking Marshmello, if people like him, whatever. It's that they almost exclusively booked trash like Marshmello, that they almost exclusively booked "hot new artists that are played on the radio and aren't really new"
Have any of you actually seen Tool in the last 3-4 years? You're kidding yourselves if you think Maynard's voice is even 1/10th what it was, find me a live video in the past 3-4 years where he has sounded good. He doesn't hit any of those notes anymore and the standing in the back of the stage schtick is old compared to the fact that he doesn't feel the need to do that with Puscifer or APC.
I've seen Tool 3 times in the past couple of years, you're definitely wrong. True his voice isn't the same as it was 20 years ago (whose is?). But to say it's 10% of what it was is laughable.
He's been standing in the back since Laterals days, I don't see that ever changing, get used to it.
And he actually enjoys Puscifer, so that's what you should see if you want to worship at the MJK alter. Go see Tool because they put on a hell of a show.
I am going to back this up up Rothric and justinmn9319 . I saw Tool TWICE last year and Puscifer December 2015. If you think that Maynard can't still sing you are fucking crazy. Can he still hold a 2 minute note (or however stupid, crazy long he could in the past)? No, but can he still hit every single note and hold it for 45 secs? YES. And if you don't think he can, then it is obvious that you haven't seen them in ages. For Tool he has always stood in the back, it started because of his weird not wanting to be the focus and continued because he isn't about Tool anymore. His focus is on Puscifer and A Perfect Circle which is why he will stand front and center for those shows.

for sure and i get why people are pissed, i really do feel kinda bad watching this group fall apart at the seams
In that regard you could flip it to how does a coastal festival in the Northeast only manage to get tired old Mumford, a rapper with one album, and a controversially liked/disliked Tool as their headliners? Add conflicts and you maybe see a lucky what? 15 sets all weekend?
And those 15 sets is more then what I want to see at bonnaroo this year. Of the announced festivals so far when you factor in quality and cost bonnaroo is the worst. And honestly it's not close for me. I honestly never thought I would get to the point I would have literally zero desire to attend Bonnaroo. This would of been my 10th year in a row but honestly even if I had a free ticket I'm not sure the other expenses are worth it this year.
How's this sound: Bonnaroo 2017 - No cover charge! (w/5 BLT, 3 Amish Donut and 1 T-Shirt purchase).

I've only seen APC back in the Mer de Noms era, and he was obscured most of the show from what I remember. Did that not continue with later APC shows?
I wish I could have seen Tool in the AEnima era. Body painted Maynard just going beserk.

I only saw APC at Voodoo, years ago and he was off center towards the back with a green mask on, I think. Maybe he still does that for APC, but my whole point is he LOVES working on Puscifer. APC isn't his baby or creation, it is someone else's and all he does is sing. Tool is basically owned by Sony because he "sold his soul to make a record" and he hates that he is contractually obligated to them, which is why the last album is taking so long (besides the stupid lawsuit bullshit). Where as Puscifer is his creation, his baby and what he wants to focus and work on. It makes sense that Puscifer would be the one that he is front and center for (although sometimes he will move to the back as well) those shows.

I still watch the shitty videos on youtube every once in awhile. Dude was a possessed animal on stage, it's incredible to watch. Now the production is insane so it kind of makes up for it. Hopefully they mix it up a bit from the 2016 shows this year.

They are one of the few bands that I have traveled for, they are so amazing live especially back in those days.

Yeah same here. I've only seen them once this past year because it took me some time to get into them/have the money to go see them. Once I gave them a fair, deep listen I was obsessed quick. Although if they keep the same setlists from last yr and the same production I wouldn't travel to see them this year. Hopefully they FINALLY hit Chicago. It's been like 7 years or some shit.

He's 50 years old with a hip replacement. Stay the fuck in the back and let me trip on visuals

This is my biggest criticism. Bonnaroo was doing fine in terms of ticket sales when they genuinely tried to curate a unique, diverse lineup. After this year's lineup release, it's clear that they've abandoned this approach and are trying to cater to the "college kids who love EDM and listen to the hottest songs in streaming". There are dozens of great acts that were available for the taking, but they deliberately chose to go with lesser quality alternatives.

What if the silent disco plays rock all weekend? 🤔
2014 and 2015 I'd go to the Silent Disco or Christmas Barn til the sun came. They played danceable house music. And stuff that sounded like Claude Von Stroke that made you want to dance in a way that wasnt just throwing your fists in the air.
Maybe they did play some good stuff late at night and I just walked in at the wrong times, but last year each time I went to either late at night, they were playing generic trap dubstep bass-drop shit and I couldn't stay for more than 10 minutes. That was disappointing.
I started to put together a mock on my google sheet template, but I didn't get very far. I just don't know what to do with all of the EDM, and there aren't the same bands that fit previous year's formulas to fill the schedule. I might update the spreadsheet once the daily schedule comes out, but for now here is as much as I could get done (not in google sheet form):
Fri What: ??? > Cage the Elephant > Chance the Rapper > U2 Fri Which: ??? > Torey Lanez > Glass Animals > The XX >>>>>> Flume > Marshmello (LN) Friday Tent Closers: Car Seat Headrest, Big Gigantic, Louis the Child Fri other LN: Umphree's McGee, Yellow Claw, Gallant

I assume Big Gigantic would get a late afternoon Which spot similar to GRiZ last year
