Pano just works for me because it's top heavy with stuff I love - I haven't seen Tame Impala since Currents was released, I'm a devoted Frank fanboy, and I'm a huge ATCQ fan. The undercard has enough stuff to justify the ticket price (though objectively I could see some people not seeing the value). I've heard great things about the festival so the headliners give me an excuse to give it a try.

Its been a while since I've looked at a lot of these lineups, though. Gave LIB a significant boost because they got Gorillaz and i'm stoked to be going.

Going to Firefly this I'd trade the lineups without second guessing. Gorillaz/Lorde/The XX over Bob Dylan/21P/Weeknd is worth that to me. The rest is basically the same artists or ones who just played Firefly. You'd lose a few gems The Shins and Glass Animals but I gladly give that up.

I'm not sure if this is something that's happened in the past on here (I'm not all that plugged in beyond the usual discussions I haunt), but I think it'd be pretty neat to have an Inforoo Festival of the Year bracket in a similar manner to how we've had the large Album of the Year bracket. Particularly considering how the scope of the board has so thoroughly transcended being just about Bonnaroo, it seems appropriate to me
Does this already exist and do I just look like a big dummy now?

I think we could already crown a winner right now though.

I like this idea.
How are we gonna seed the fests though, to begin with?

It might not achieve the best result in terms of seeding by strength, but we could have seeds be based on how many Inforoo members attended each festival?
Before the tourney began, all those interested would comment with every festival they attended that year, then the organizer would tally those up and seed from there

I would think the fairest way to seed is by attendance no? Coachella grabbing 100k a day has a significant advantage in terms of what their lineup will look like over a fest that only gets 20k. That's not to say that the 20k festival wouldn't/can't have the better lineup, but the seeding makes more sense to have the bigger festivals as the higher seed.

I think either of those could potentially work! What would pros and cons be for using Inforoo attendance vs. general attendance?

Attendance or max capacity? Also, would you multiply daily attendance by each day? That would favor 3 day fests over 2 day fests but would also probably make ACL #1 due to their two weekends. Either way, I’m in favor of this.

Actually, I think ticket price may be the fairest and easiest way to seed since those numbers are easy to look up and should be reflective of how big the festival is.
Post by Jeremy Jamm on Sept 21, 2017 21:38:53 GMT -5
I guess every way will have some pros and cons. I think the issue with price is some fests are simply better priced (or just way overpriced). I'm pretty sure my Firefly GA was more than my ACL GA this year. Not a single soul would possibly say Firefly should be seeded higher than ACL.

I still think basing it upon Inforoo member attendance makes a lot of sense. It'd give it more weight to our own preferences as a board rather than defaulting to general popularity levels.
For example, we wouldn't change the Album of the Year tournament to be reflective of general sales/streaming numbers, right?

Sorry for the double post, but another question would be whether we hold cancellations against festivals (Queens/Tribe at OSL, all the Hopscotch ones, etc.) or merely judge by the initial posters. I would think the former makes more sense, but open to other opinions here

I think that would be up to the voter honestly. I don’t think that would affect seeding at all.
I know 64 sounds like a lot but you could easily come up with that many IMO...

That’s 32 right there and doesn’t even include names like Panorama, Day For Night, Sound On Sound, Desert Daze, Growlers Six, Movement, III Points, Hopscotch, Big Ears and more. That’s just NA festivals as well, you could also throw in Glastonbury, Primavera, Fuji Rock and tons more.

I think it should be limited to NA festivals only. If we're gonna get in to the rest of the world, we can totally have 128.

I agree keeping it to North American fests would be easiest.
If anyone else has a burning desire to curate this, I'll gladly defer, but if not I wouldn't mind running the show (assuming we're able to find a consensus method on which fests to include/how to seed them)!
EDIT: As I've started up an Excel sheet to compare attendance, I've discovered it's pretty damn frustrating to find concrete attendance numbers for many of these festivals. Anyone have and tips/sources to assist here?
I've only skimmed this thread, so sorry if I missed something, but what about grouping fests into four eight-festival categories? Large fests (Coachella, Lolla, etc.), medium fests (Boston Calling, Pitchfork), niche/genre fests (Moogfest, Desert Days, etc.), and International (Glasto, Prima, etc.).
So it kind of answers best lineup in each category, then best overall lineup.
Edit: Groupings can be curated any way, I was just throwing out an example. Also, if this just gets people arguing about whats large vs. medium or medium vs. niche, we can scrap it, just a thought.

That's not an awful idea either. I kinda liked the idea of the general mayhem of tossing all those different kinds of fests against each other, gave it a very March Madness kinda feel. I see the logic of that method thoughh (and I also fully agree we don't need any more circular arguments about where the specific lines are drawn for festival size tiers haha)
Omg how is there no list of US music festivals by attendance size online
You'd prob have to look up each one at a time unfortunately. But I think this forum certainly has the knowledge of all the relevant festivals and could put a list of 32 together (or whatever size we decide).
