If you have access to Sirius XM radio, you would know this lineup was very much curated. Check out Alt Nation, Sirius XMU, and BPM. Edit: Also, I gave it a 5.
I don't have satellite radio anymore. Are those all alt-rock and dance stations? If so, how come they picked fairly safe and accessible names in these genres?
Fuck, even the dreaded Made in America Fest does a better job curating.
Yeah the first two are alternative channels and the other is mainstream EDM. Not going to defend the curation, but I see the intent.

Alt nation is alternative, XMU is indie, BPM is edm. I dropped mine because they wanted 20 bucks a month and all I listened to was XMU. I liked that channel though, especially the noon shows they did with some of the blogs like gorilla vs bear and Brooklyn vegan

I guess what bugs me is that anybody wanting to get out of their musical comfort zone will only be getting a surface level of what other types of music represent.

In this modern shit era of Roo, I feel its decent. I don't like edm or anything close to that. I don't like lorde one bit. Right off the top my for sures would be u2, rhcp, potugal., cold war, superjam, bluegrass, royal blood, cage elephant, glass animals, umphrees. I'm fine with that in 2017. In 2013 and prior, no I wouldn't be. But since Live Nation fucked this festival, this is ok. Def lacking woah! Acts
I say the context you look at it with matters too. Compared to other Roo lineups this is a 3 to me. But overall if you ignore the potential that they had the lineup is more of a strong 5 to light 6. It is not worth the price of the ticket though

Was beyond excited once I heard U2 were headlining, as someone who ironically appreciated them until U Talkin' U2 to Me somehow flipped me into unironically loving them, but there's just so little incentive besides seeing them to make the trip/spend the money on this lineup. Seeing all of the people on this lineup I actually care about is pretty attainable without spending too much and there's just no one interesting that's drawn me in in a "won't get many chances to see this" way like Omar Souleyman or GZA with that full brass band. It's a 3 for me, this would've been my 6th Bonnaroo and I had talked some of my friends who stopped coming in 2013 into coming back if the lineup was good, now we're talking about maybe making our first trip to Sasquatch if that lineup is better. Overall, this is a pretty buff lineup, a true bummer.

There was a moment of excitement because I found it better than last year's lineup. However that's the only Roo lineup that I found it better than. I'll give it a 4 for U2 and a handful of pleasant nails. It's not worth the ticket and travel prices though.
I just want to know who the hell was the one person to vote 9? Like who out there is like, "This lineup is ALLLMOOOSSSTTTT perfect!"? What the hell could be keeping that person from a 10?

I really don't know. But I voted a 6 and honestly it'd only be about 6 acts from an 8 for me personally. Mind you I wasn't in attendance for the stacked years, but let's say they dropped a lot of the bad EDM and added Sigur Ros, MGMT, The Avalanches and Hall n Oates.
Then let's say it was Pretty Lights (live) at #5 instead of major lazer and had a stronger #2 hip hop act. That lineup would be in contention for a 9 to me compared to the other '17 lineups.
I gotta say the only two that I will truly, without a doubt, regret not getting to see would be Umphrey's McGee and Big Gigantic because I remember their epic 2012 set where they played till sunrise. Though if the last couple years are any indication they won't get to do that this time. Red Hot Chili Peppers would be good even though I tend to avoid them lately as they pull the scab off some bitter memories for me. Wouldn't count that as a negative towards a rating of the lineup though, that's just personal bs.
U2 is a good get though honestly I've never been a huge fan. Otherwise very meh for my tastes though I'd imagine some of the unknowns will be worth checking out. Not trying to be cynical or jaded, but I must admit I'm pretty underwhelmed with most new music nowadays. So don't know whether to blame Live Nation or just growing out of the whole thing. I am glad to see the camping passes are included with a ticket again this year after they tried gouging everyone last year on top of the increased ticket prices.
So... I suppose I'd give it a 3... maybe squeak out a 4 if I'm in an exceptionally brilliant mood that day.
Everyone has turned into true festival snobs and you have expectations. You know what happens when you have expectations? YOU GET LET DOWN. ALWAYS.
I've said it before in other threads. I live in little rock arkansas where NO music comes through. I've only seen 3 artists on this lineup so they aren't repeats for me. I don't go to multiple festivals. Bonnaroo is my only adult only kid free vacation i get a year and I will be there regardless of the lineup. I happen to love this year's lineup. I haven't been this excited since 2014. Which was also my first year.
I don't know these glory days everyone speaks of but I haven't been to a Bonnaroo I haven't fucking enjoyed.
Last year's lineup dropped and I knew literally 6 artists and had to research all the other bands but found a lot I fell in love with! This year, I immediately saw 26 artists I knew and was instantly excited for and after research i've added another 51 to that list.
Yeah... there aren't 70 edm acts so it's fair to say, I truly am excited and not just bc the lineup is edm heavy. I fucking love Bonnaroo and I can't wait!
She has already admitted she has horrible music tastes. Let her enjoy her 2017 Bonnaroo, she will have a blast and that is what matters. We can be snobs and go somewhere that has lineups that make us happy.

Yall need to quit being debbie downers already.
To be clear, it makes me happy you are excited about the lineup. I know you are going to have a lot of fun and that is great. And if I went to Bonnaroo this year, I have no doubt I would have a good time, even if I'm not interested in much of the music booked. There is decent food to eat, I'm outside in the sun surrounded by loads of interesting looking people, I'm in a place where I've had a lot of happy memories, and there are loud noises and colorful things and various pleasing 2kHz-60hz tones happening all around me.
I also recognize that a lot of my musical tastes have changed. Some of this is due to age, and my overall fear of the kids these days with their EDM, zimas, hula hoops, and pac man video games. Some of this is changing tastes, as I'm only recently discovering there is a whole swath of electronic music out there that has nothing to do with American EDM, and I'm super excited about discovering it. Furthermore, about the only popular music that excites me is hip-hop, although I keep an open mind and try to stay up on whatever rock/indie/pop stuff is being offered. Yes I still love my Phish, my Dead, and some other jam stuff, but I'm not insane enough to think Bonnaroo is going to "return to form" and suddenly book KDTU late night and pay Drums & Tuba to reunite.
I can't speak for everyone who is complaining, but personally my expectations are in check. I left Bonnaroo Sunday last year fully accepting it might be the last time I set foot on the farm, because Bonnaroo has changed AND I've changed. I don't expect Bonnaroo to stay the same because it never has, in fact the changes it made in the past are part of what made it so great. I also don't expect myself to stay the same, because I want my musical and artistic tastes to constantly be challenged by new and exciting things.
It's the emphasized point above that leaves me with a feeling of disappointment about the 2017 Bonnaroo lineup. It's not challenging, it's not exciting, it's not weird, at least not for me. Maybe it is for other people. Maybe other people don't want to be challenged, which is fine, because different people enjoy music and art for different reasons. Or maybe they do want to be challenged and what challenges them doesn't challenge me.
My expectations were in check, I'm not devastated, in fact I'm excited to try out a different festival. But I am a little bit sad, and I think it's OK for me to exorcise that sadness by taking to the internet and making snarky jokes and taking delight in others doing the same.
So call me a wook if you must, but the truth is I'm just a custie. And this custie is taking his business elsewhere in 2017.
I hope they don't have fun. Roo used to be a place where you could get away from the pop loving masses for a weekend and be around the weirdos you might not be able to hang out with. They've musically gentrified roo and fuck them

If I can't have it my way, no one can!!!!!
Grow up.
Well said 3post1jack1. I had the same feeling when I left last year, that I knew it might be the last time I go to Bonnaroo.
I wasn't even planning on going last year, but after the Levitation cancellation ripped my heart out, I needed something.
As for the OP, I gave it a 4. Some things I would enjoy, but it just can't compare to any other major (and some mid tiered) fests. If I were local and had a ticket for $100, I'd be there. But driving 1100 miles one way, spending > $600, and using nearly a week of vacation time? Hard pass.

There's nothing wrong with booking good pop music. Unfortunately, Roo just booked a lot of mediocre artists in general.
I've been to every Bonnaroo but the first one. I always have an amazing time because I go with a great group of people and it's a vacation away from the real world where I can camp, eat great food, go to a bunch of shows, be out in the sun, dance late into the night, and spend time with people I don't get to see as often as we'd like because of life/kids/work/adulting. And I'm gonna go again this year for those reasons and because I just love being there and have so many great memories on the farm. I went in with extremely low expectations after last year's lineup so this year, as bad as it is compared to the glory days, exceeded those low expectations while still being a slight disappointment as I did have some hope maybe the low ticket sales would bring back some of what used to make the lineups great. But there is enough on there to fill my schedule with shows I'd enjoy and things like U2, The Weeknd, Chance, Umphreys, and a couple more I'm genuinely excited to see. I know the lineup has to change and we will never get lineups like 03-05 again. Would I prefer lineups like 2012/13, which I think are probably my favorite 2 lineups? Definitely. Am I sad that it has become just another festival without unique, exciting bookings? Absolutely. But I'm still going to go because I will still have an amazing time. This may be my last year buying presale. But probably not.
