U2 definitely had the smallest crowd of all the headliners but they were all pretty close. It's not like they were playing to an empty field.
Also agree. I was in the same spot for all headliners and it definitely went Chance>RHCP>Weeknd>U2. I would say The crowd size for U2 was pretty close to what it was for Lorde.. at least where I was
I wondered about that, I heard her cover of Kristofferson from camp and wished I'd have went. But I'm not gonna lie idk how some of y'all do it I can't make it at the which middle of the day
It was easier this year since the weather was pretty mild. Sometimes you just have to power through though.
Actually was saying Queen with Adam Lambert would be pretty cool, just to hear some queen on the farm. Would that be a headliner though or more along the lines of our legacy (lionel richie) act
I think LN Which would be the right play with them. If U2 wasn't able to fill the field, as people have asserted, then Queen w Lambert cannot. They can fill Which and with a LN spot it can still be sold as a respectable slot.
The crowd at U2 was more sparse than any headliner I've seen since 2007 (exemptin' all of 2016 because no one was there). I was quite surprised. I really expected more people there.
What sets were weirdly unattended? Kevin Morby was empty and Skepta was pretty lowly attended.
I don't know if I'd call it weirdly underattended or just a symptom of the audience the current version of Bonnaroo draws, but Angelique Kidjo put on the best set of the weekend to half a tent.
Yes. Angelique Kidjo was the best show of the weekend. Hands down.

My whole point in mentioning Queen and Lambert was to curtail headliner expectations a bit from Fleetwood Mac, and now people think they'd play Which. Great.
I like how you guys are comparing crowd sizes for two of the lowest attended years in history. It's not surprising that some of the crowds would end up small as a result.

This year was still probably smaller than 2015/2014 but it definitely didn't feel like it. Last year felt empty. This year just felt like normal Bonnaroo.

Yup, still a couple thousand less (by most estimates) than their best years, but easily 10-20k more than last year.
I'm sure sang_xcx could make some educated guesses on attendance if someone has a decent crowd shot.

Most of us were comparing just the headlining acts of 2017.
The Rolling Stones, Foo fighters, fleetwood Mac , the pixies..
Here's to hoping anyway! Led Zeppelin will be 50 years old in 2018 .. Wow that would be nuts..very unlikely
Don't bank on The Rolling Stones (too expensive) or Led Zeppelin (just won't happen and they don't have enough money to make it happen if the rumors of them playin' the next Old'chella fest turn out true).
The others I'd say could be possible...but Bonnaroo has done a great job these last several years of missin' out on what should be obvious bands to fill the lineup and The Farm with people.
I just don't see them being able to regain the pre-2015 crowds ever again. If they went full-on jam, they might be able to pull those numbers, but that isn't happening...and with Lockn and Peach also now in the market I don't see them being able to pull 80k again with a jam lineup.
Even if they booked a Coachella-esque lineup in terms of quality I don't think they're able to get back to 80-90k. The market is just too segmented and they're in a no man's land in terms of major metropolitan areas. They're unable to sell Roo as a brand bc its identity was sort of all over the place to begin with and instead of running with that "weird, kitschy" vibe they've just sanitized it into Lolla outside Nashville.

I see people saying this and I don't understand it. Going "full-on jam" would lead to the worst ticket sales in Bonnaroo history. This coupled with the complaint that Bonnaroo 2016 didn't give enough "jam undercard" to compliment Dead & Co. as a headliner. Do fans of bigger name jam acts really care all that much about smaller name jam acts? Maybe I'm extrapolating a bit too much from my own experience, but I love Phish and go see Phish 3-10 times a year. I'll catch Umphrey's once a year or so, STS9 every couple of years, but I'm not chomping at the bit to catch Rando's Nugget Swindle or whatever band is playing Bourbon St. Bar in Auburn, AL this year.

Yeah but were you chomping at the bit to see J Coke, Macklemore and Halsey? There was a way to make that undercard more appealing to Dead fans without booking hack noodle bands.

I'm just going to pause and scold myself for starting a conversation about the 2016 undercard.
Glastonbury is in fucking actual no-mans land and they make it work every year. Bonnaroo could have been/was our answer to Glasto. Being that it's so far removed is a positive thing because curfew was never an issue. If they would have just left the lineups alone they would continue to draw those numbers on reputation alone. There was a consistency to their lineups and overall vibe. Even with all of the mid-tier fests around me, I would have continued to rough it at Bonnaroo no matter what.
Edit: Point being the saturated market wouldn't stop a top-tier, reputable festival as long as it kept face.

"Full on" anything is the problem. What the lineup has done away with is balance and diversity. (And experience. Soooo many acts with a shallow discography.)
1975 are putting out a new album next year. Their last album was really big (and had some genuinely good songs if you ask me). I could see them being in the Ellie Goulding spot

1975 sells out Express Live (biggest venue in town that isn't an arena) almost instantly when they roll through and kids line up like 8-10 hours ahead of time to get the rail for their shows. I don't quite understand THAT much of a love for them but they are certainly popular.

I was really bored and made a realistic(?) full mock for next year. I couldn't help but put planetarium in there, but that's almost guaranteed not to happen. I had The National on here too for it to make a little more sense, but tragically switched them for the 1975 because they just seem inevitable. I also almost put Pusha T in for 2 Chainz to add another Gorillaz collaborator into the lineup, but who knows if King Push will actually come out this year. Also, return of a big metal act with Gojira.
