IMO, the best three rap sets I've seen on the farm are Kanye, Kendrick, and Macklemore (yes, Macklemore.). Chance is on the outside looking in.
Without checkin' previous schedules/lineups my top 3 rap sets would prolly rank as so:
Jay-Z GZA (performin' "Liquid Swords") Childish Gambino (his second year)
Honorable mentions to Atmosphere and The Knux (also their second time performin').
I'm also not a huge rap/hip-hop guy. But yeah, Jay-Z was so good he made me late to see Thievery Corporation whom I had been wantin' to see live some four to six years at that point.
How did Kanye/Kendrick compare to Jay Z? This gets me pumped up more for Jay z 2018
I love running over to the Bonnaroo sub and reading about how it's time to forgive Kanye and that they wouldn't mind seeing Katy Perry or Bruno Mars billed in the top four lmfao
My only beef w/ Kanye is that he really passed on some low-hanging fruit in 2014: All he had to do is come out show a little bit of humility (even if an act) and the crowd would have gone FUCKING INSANE.
No other artist has ever been that talked about going into the show... there was electricity in the air anticipating his first rant.... he could have become a Bonnaroo God with so little effort.
All that being said...I loved the show and he was fantastic, especially for the first 20 minutes, but man... what a missed opportunity.

Kendrick was fine. I've been there both years Kanye was to perform. I still stick by the '08 motto of "Fuck Kanye!" I waited a few hours to see him in '08, but homeboy was busy partyin' it up in ATL and couldn't be bothered to show up in time fer his set. Then he blamed Bonnaroo and Pearl Jam on separate issues as to why he was late. Then in 2014 I gave him another chance. Apparently if you were in the pit it was great! Only he was playin' to a field of some 60k+ and wanted the main stage screens turned off, and most people outside the pit couldn't even hear his performance. So Kanye can suck a fuck. Jay-Z's performance will go down in history over needle dick's two sub-par performances.
That'd be great, but the problem with Tool is that they are ALWAYS an undercard killer.
Dunno if this is sarcasm...but have you checked the 2007 lineup? That undercard was killer!
Oh yeah, forgot about that... But that was 10 years ago, when this was possible. Notice Lady Gaga as the last name and Cage the Elephant on the 2nd to bottom line.
Actually Tool has played far fewer festivals than I had recalled, but I still think they'd stick the final nail in the coffin of the Roo undercard if they played again.
I don't understand how booking Tool would coincide with having a bad undercard. I mean it's already bad enough. A cool headliner couldn't hurt.
$$$$
Tool can't be anymore expensive than U2. We had Macca at the top and still managed to get a solid undercard. Tool's presence would not affect the lineup all that much.

I could be missing the point... but the way I read it is that "Tool won't be Bonnaroo's #1"... which means Bonnaroo will pay for two #1's and kill the undercard.

And if Tool is our #2, what are we looking at here? Neither Jay-Z - Tool nor Fleetwood Mac - Tool feel like things that would happen. Especially if we're throwing in the Killers too.

Just to clarify, I don't think Tool is at all likely. Without new material, they'd be over two years into their current reunion-ish tour and they played Roo on their last album cycle. I just think if they did get booked, they'd be more of a #2 than a #1.
With both The Killers and Arcade Fire skipping Nashville, I'd expect at least one to play. Maybe both. I'm expecting something like:
Jay-Z - Arcade Fire - The Killers - Lana Del Ray
or
Foo Fighters - Drake - The Killers - Nine Inch Nails
I don't think Fleetwood Mac is particularly likely, as much as I would appreciate that booking. I think they're more likely to do Coachella.
Man, I liked a couple of their albums, but The Killers might be the most boring pick of the new era. With alt-acts like Foo Fighters active it just feels even more like phoning it in.
