I don't think millennials hate guitars. It's just that a lot of people who go to festivals now want something they can easily dance and party to. EDM and Hip Hop provide accessible music to do that. The average festival attendee doesn't even have to be familiar with the DJ that's performing to enjoy the show. All they have to do is dance and "go crazy" when the beat drops.

Nailed it...also, there's no real outlet for guitar-based rock anymore. Terrestrial rock/alt radio is dead, MTV isn't a thing anymore, and the college scene has moved towards EDM/Hip hop. I mean, Kanye was kinda accurate when he said he's the biggest "rock star" alive because rappers and DJs have become the new "rock stars".

Even on this board, which is not chock full of youngins, the only rock band everyone seems to like is Radiohead, anyway. I think the rock lineup on this year's Bonnaroo lineup really is its strong point, compared to the EDM and rap anyway. U2, The xx, Glass Animals, Future Islands, PtM, Car Seat Headrest, Warpaint.. and then toward the bottom stuff like Khruangbin, Klangstof, Deap Vally, The Orwells, Ten Fe, etc.
As far as EDM and rap: I'm completely over Lazer, I'm trying to get into Chance, Claude/Barclay is great, but for the most part stuff is just ok (Flatbush, Flume, Haywyre, Goldfish) or offensively awful (you know the ones I mean). I thought the EDM last year was pretty cookie-cutter, but even something like RL Grime or Griz is far more interesting to me than most of what they've got now. If they're going to go in that direction that hard, I think they'd do well to be more diverse.

100% agree with this analysis!
Doubling down on this - while I agree that this lineup is not fantastic or even particularly good, when I sit down with these mocks I'm seeing bands that I enjoy throughout the weekend. That being said, I don't like EDM/Rap/Electronic music so obviously I'm not hit as hard by the lack of depth there. The more I listen to this lineup the more I'm not worried about having another great Roo.
I just think for a change of pace from EDM,PTM will be fairly crowded.
but it's the first LN and EDM show not on the other so think people are gonna be all pumped/drugged up for ML lol
I'm not expecting the incredibly sparse attendance for late nights like with Medeski Martin Wood & Scofield in 2015 or Nick Cave in 2014, but I don't think it's gonna be packed.
If you only have one late night set per tent, aside from the Other, people won't really care to take a "break" from EDM. There's no reason to when you only get to see one late night show a night. Major Lazer and Flume will be packed to the gills and the rest of the tents will deal with the fall out.

i know i'm not the popular opinion around here with liking a lot of this shitty edm but i find some happiness in a flume snails conflict where snails will be packed with all the people that love the heavy shit. i'm pumped for snails

Bob Moses last year had it the worst...they played for less than 100 people. No joke, Unchained had a bigger crowd than them.

And this is why we can't have nice things
I think this was mainly because Bob Moses conflicted with Tame. That was a fuck-up by Roo. I'd be willing to bet that a bunch of Tame fans really wanted to see that show.

All of this started with Unchained. As far as I can tell, it was the first of many mind-boggling bad decisions Bonnaroo has made over the past five years. It was the first decision I can recall them making that showed how out of touch with their core fanbase they are, taking the most special part of Bonnaroo (late night) and weirdly watering it down with a cover band for a band nobody really likes.

Yes the Unchained set was not even comically bad. Just the worst waste of a LN slot ever, even to this day. I recall many of us stayin' after the fuckin' EPIC Alice Cooper show because we were all somewhat convinced that Unchained had to be the biggest troll of all time.
We were so wrong.
And then the Pedro Martinez set that night was also criminally under attended.
But damn did GZA kill it!
Fuck Bonnaroo LNs used to be filled with greatness!

Speaking of underattended sets, was anyone at Deafheaven? I showed up towards the end and they were great, but noooooo one was there. I think the turnout at that may have had a major influence on their decision to roll back metalroo. The next year the metal acts were during the day, which while brutal af, is not metal.

Slayer however was one of my favorite Bonnaroo shows of all time

In Deafheaven's defense, 2014 had probably the best late night options ever. I can't remember exactly who played when but there was plenty to see both Friday and Saturday.
This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.

Friday: Ice Cube > Skrillex, Mastodon > Deafheaven > Meshuggah, Superjam > Chance the Rapper, Disclosure > Die Antword Saturday: The Flaming Lips > Kaskade, Nick Cave > Darkside, Skrillex Superjam, Frank Ocean > Glitch Mob
