Let me explain, because I know there are a lot people out there who see a franchise QB or at least a very good starter. This has been bothering me since I saw the statistics on Watson and it makes a lot of sense. Watson's velocity number was 49 mph, which to an average fan they think, "so what?". The NFL threshold has been 55 mph, and no QB who has thrown under has had any NFL success. Well, let me reiterate that, because Dak Prescott and Tyrod Taylor threw under 55 mph but were both experiencing shoulder injuries at the time. They are the exception because of that. This screams bust in my opinion. Watson already struggles with the deep ball and interceptions, so having a lower ball velocity speed means that it will take a pass longer to reach it's destination as it will have to travel more feet (larger arc). If Watson struggled in college with interceptions, expect the NFL to eat him alive with how much faster players are. Cody Kessler is deemed to have a noodle arm, but he threw 55 mph so I feel that comparison between the two should really tell the story of what Watson's NFL career could be. To conclude, I like Watson, great leader and great guy but his skills will not translate to the NFL because of arm strength and the fact he fails to read defenses. I hope I'm wrong but there are some analytics you just can't afford to ignore.

Malik Zaire announcing he is coming to UF and VT commit Quincy Patterson being named to the elite 11 all excited me this weekend.
The VT/Clemson game in September has to be at least a 3:30 start, right? Sylvan Esso is playing in Asheville the night before....really don't want to miss either one of those events. I'm also keeping Nov. 11 open for being at a game. Going to have to decide between VT/GT in Atlanta or Florida @ South Carolina.

SC is trash, so I'd go to Atlanta
I'm about 45 mins closer to Columbia compared to ATL, and I would imagine Willimas-Brice has a better college football atmosphere compared to Bobby Dodd. The being said, I have followed Virginia Tech much closer over the past 5 years compared to UF and Atlanta also has a lot more going on than Columbia.
We will see how the seasons are going into October before I make that call.

I think you meant Columbia is trash. Or if you meant their team is trash, carry on.

Picked up my first preview mag, Athlon with Jordan Whitehead on the cover. One of the stories that the cover is advertising is something like SEC Coaches - Mediocrity Reigns.
I think that's a huge story coming into this season. A lot of SEC East coaches have their butts on the line - Butch and Stoops for sure, and a bad season ain't helping McElwain or Odom. Muschamp is a retread but did do better than expected last year, there are a lot of questions about Kirby Smart.
West coaches include one of the hottest seats in America at TAMU, another guy who is losing momentum in Hugh Freeze, new hire Orgeron...it should be an interesting year for the SEC.

I agree with all this. It's important with Orgeron to note that this isn't his first shot coaching in the SEC. It did not go so well the first time. I would also definitely toss Malzahn on the list of coaches on a hot seat.

And now Eddie O is at a higher profile gig and he didn't come through on his promise of bringing his buddy Lane back.
Malzahn only is on the hot seat because Auburn is crazy, he wouldn't be on the hot seat at any normal place.
One thing in the SEC this year is, can they have more than one team win more than 8 games? I get into discussions about the best conference with my buddy who is a Mizzou alum and he maintains, even after two years ago where the SEC had a terrible bowl record or last year when everyone went at best 8-4 (besides 'bama of course), that the SEC is the best. He points to the NFL Draft as evidence. In my opinion there's a difference between most talent and best teams. SEC teams will need to prove it this year by having a few more teams rise to the top.

Malzahn is definitely not on as hot of a seat as others. Much like Jones, his is more of an issue of perception. People think they should be better than what their record showed, so it must be the coach's fault. Also, he has had some coaching turnover and decommits, so that gets the rumor mill started that he is losing control and all that mess.
I think the SEC will have at least one team that wins more than eight games. I couldn't say which team that would be. I do not envision that team being in the BCS hunt though. Totally agreed with you on the draft not being the best indicator of "best conference" as it does not take into account how well those guys actually end up doing in the NFL. Also, it doesn't matter if the individual player is good if the team sucks. Best conference is always going to be a tricky conversation because there isn't one metric you can point to to give you an objective winner. I definitely don't think the SEC can lay claim to the best conference title by default anymore. A pretty good debate could be had about who the best conference is given you had people who were willing to actually look rather than just vote for theirs.

Orgeron has admitted he made mistakes at ole miss. He has had a few other teams to get some experience, but I actually do think he is a pretty good coach and a great recruiter. And it is much easier to get talent to BAton Rouge than Oxford.
With Ole Miss getting the "lack of institutional control" tag, I think it is entriely possible Freeze gets a show-cause and then he is shown the door. No point keeping him around and then they don't have to pay his buy-out.
I think Jones is really only on the hot seat with the most hardcore of the UT fanbase. The administration won't even entertain the idea unless there is a catastrophe. He has made some boneheaded in-game decisions, but I'm not ready cut ties yet. We got rid of DeBord. I am cautiously optimistic about Hoke as DL coach, and with a reputable S&C coach I think we can avoid the sort of injuries that were our bane last year.
If I were to bet money, I'd say Sumlin is the first to lose his job.
It's officially football season now that the baseball team is out. At the baseball game Sat. I heard someone sum up how I feel about the guy that's listed as our staring qb. He'd be a great qb at GT. I don't think it's going to be a problem though, because I don't think he'll stay the starter. Early we'll have to rely on defense, which should be great once again. We have 2 qbs that haven't played yet that I believe will be better and they have so many weapons to use at wr and rb. We'll probably lose at Louisville, but that's early enough that it won't kill us.
Malzhan's hot seat is an interesting one. He definitely helped himself a lot in the middle of last season before everyone got hurt and we had those shitty loses to UGA and Bama. His seat has been the hottest when he meddles in the offense. We did the best whenever Rhett Lashlee was running things and he bounced this off season for the same job at UCONN. So... maybe Chip Lindsey comes in and things go well or maybe Gus doubles down and fans get even more frustrated. Both of you guys are right in that it's mostly optics and crazy Auburn folks that would put his job in danger.
But if we finish in the bottom half of the West again so help me.

That's the thing I was thinking of. A ton of people wanted to make a huge deal of Lashlee's departure. You can make a lateral move to a larger school, and you can make an upward move to a smaller school. If you make a lateral move to a smaller school, people get super suspicious that something is going on.

You never know what you're going to get from Auburn. They went from not good to National championship to not good, back to national championship and then back down again. They don't have that much patience there to put up with not winning.

Yea it doesn't look great. It will look even worse if Lindsey under performs or if Gus appears to keep meddling. Hopefully it's a wake up call but who the hell knows what's going to happen. For sure there will be lots of hot seat chatter this year if we are butt again but I think Gus is secure for a while (assuming there isn't an abject disaster which, again, who the hell knows that will happen).

I mean... we've had three head coaches since 1999. It's fairly stable. We've just had wildly inconsistent performances under those head coaches. Auburn fans are now resigned to a state of whiplash for the foreseeable future.

This Ole Miss response to the NOA is just crazy. They are basically saying "yeah, we were cheating rampantly, but our saintly coach Hugh Freeze had no idea it was going on". Why are they such stans for a guy with a 19-21 SEC record?

So it's SEC media days this week, been hearing a lot about that. This simple question was posed on twitter the other day and caused a lot of discussion/argument. Who's the 2nd best team in the SEC? Who's the 2nd best coach in the SEC? Who's the best and 2nd best qb in the SEC?
Good answer. It sums up what the discussion is really about. There are not really clear, good answers to these questions and in other words the SEC is weak as fuck now. What happened?

They replaced Spurrier, Urban, Richt, Petrino, Franklin, prime Les Miles, and Pinkel with Muschamp, Muschamp/McElwain, Smart, Bielema, Mason, failed Coach O, and some guy who dresses as Mizzou's coach on Saturdays (Barry Odom, I get complaints about him from my Mizzou friends all the time). That's what happened.
The second best coach is Dan Mullen, he's a pretty freakin good coach. Obviously Kirby Smart has a high ceiling and has a chance to have a higher high than Richt.
Actually some pretty good potential at QB in the league right now. Bentley at South Carolina, Nick Fitzgerald at MSU, Nick Eason - lots of young QB talent in the league.
Second best team? I'll take Texas A&Mahahahahahahahahaha Auburn.

I picked Auburn 2nd as well. 2nd best coach I had to go with Mcilwain. None of the others have been there long enough or been consistent enough. QB I have no idea. They've struggled there as a whole. Even their best teams haven't had great qbs for a while.
