I think Vol fans who want Gruden are crazy, but I get the psyche behind it - biggest name out there with a connection, jilted by Kiffin after a year, turned down by Gundy, settled for Dooley and Butch two times in a row...sometimes you just want someone to love you back, and Gruden would be a big fish in that regard.
I can see that for sure. There is that undercurrent of worry that Tennessee will never be good again flowing through Knoxville. Gruden is a longshot fit any team, so he's probably a bad person to pin your hopes on.
He used the "We tried the small school route twice, and it didn't work." defense which surprised me because he knows that Dooley's hire wasn't really us intentionally going after a smaller coach. We just had to scramble and get someone. In his defense, I did get him to admit Venables and Mullen would be a good hire. I'm not sure he would go for Frost or Campbell at all.
Re: Gundy, I'm still surprised that people took him coming to Tennessee seriously. There were reports everywhere about how he likes to use offers from other schools to leverage a better contract at Oklahoma State.
I seem to remember at the time that I didn't think it was serious, but there were a few national media people who cautioned it was more serious than we thought (with Gundy). Since he turned the job down there have been multiple times when "sources" have said how much he is bothered by T. Boone and the booster culture in Stillwater.
Mullen would be a fantastic hire, but Matt Campbell would (I think) be the grand slam of all home runs. There are a lot of good football coaches out there who will come to Knoxville, and it's a place you can recruit to despite the lack of base, and they've got $$$$ coming out the ass. No reason the Vols can't get back to previous heights. Have to hire the right coach, not the one who will "win the press conference."

I feel like Gundy is going to be there until he retires or gets fired one or the other. Him getting poached by anyone would be a feat in my book.
I feel like we're at similar places with Gruden. It's not like I think we are going to go down in flames if they hire Gruden. I just don't think he's the best option. I have been slow to warm to Campbell, but I definitely feel better about him since I have read more about him. Radius Claus is a big fan. The unfortunate part is that a large portion of Knoxville will riot if they do hire him. Regardless of situation, they will see a small school coach who has gone 9-13 so far at his current school and whose only other head coaching experience was Toledo which doesn't count. Even Frost will have a group of people against him as UCF is not a big name program, and they were 6-7 last year. Don't even try to argue with them that they were 0-12 the year before Frost got there. Mullen presents a similar problem in that he hasn't won the SEC West. You make an excellent point about winning the press conference. One of the points for Gruden that was put out there yesterday was that he did see how Gruden could visit a recruit, and the recruit would turn them down since Gruden has "won on the highest level". I didn't expect this reputation/appearance first kind of attitude especially considering one of the huge knocks against Jones was that he did great with recruiting then didn't do shit with them once they got to campus. If anything, that proves you need something aside from talented players in order to win. I at least got him to say that Gruden would need strong coordinators if he got hired. I didn't get so far as to show him that, if a coach will require strong coordinators in order to win, he maybe isn't the guy that you need to throw every bit of money you have at.
Yeah, I think you're correct, Dave. People will burn things if UT hires Campbell, but I don't believe it will. Based on my lil silly info the list is as follows:
Frost • Mullen • Jimbo Norvell • Campbell • Jim Bob Cooter
I think Campbell is fifth on the list, unfortunately.
I heard about Jimbo Kentucky weekend but blew it off as the equivalent to Gruden. Sounds like he is at least going to listen to others in the offseason now, though I do not thing this will happen.

Who knows
With the dumpster fire of a season FSU is having, I doubt Jimbo would get welcomed with open arms.
I doubt she even had to look that much for it. Since you don't live here, you might want to look at some message boards. People are going off the deep end with this mess.

Following Tennessee's disaster season from afar has been very entertaining.
Guy has won a Super Bowl and finished 1st in his division like 5 out of his 10 or 11 seasons coaching in the NFL. His personality is deceiving as well as annoying, but I have hard time imagining if he actually took on a big college program going through a struggle that the program wouldn't be uplifted sooner rather than later and they would have big recruiting advantage.

Says the guy who is worried about his coach getting stolen.
It's probably already been said but I just don't understand the obsession. He hasn't coached in a long time. He hasn't coached in college. These college kids don't know about him as a coach. I think it would be another big failure. I hope they go for it.

I know. I feel like people think it's guaranteed we'll win the SEC within two years if he comes on with top five recruiting classes every year. People will lose their shit when it doesn't happen, and his buyout will make Jones's look like pocket change.

It could make those nightmares of never being good again come true. So with rumors of Jimbo going to A&M, Auburn or Tenn, who in the world does FSU go after?

I seem to remember that Fisher got brought up for the Tennessee job last time. He may just be a placeholder name that people throw in there. I wouldn't think too much of him making the jump without something more concrete.

I'm not too worried about it. Not to mention our messages boards have been filled with stupid "they can have him" type of comments after the last two weeks.

Will that not be the case for whoever they hire in Knoxville if it's not a quick turnaround?

Expectations will be high for anyone but not to the level they will be with Gruden. If anything else, his contract would set expectations higher than they would for anyone else.

Swain and Hyams both report that Gruden said no to the initial job offer. Both get accused of lying to keep it secret/hype the hire. I love this coaching search.

Choose the wrong Hokie game to go to between last week and today. Nice to see the running game get established for once this season and the defense bouncing back after an awful two-game stretch. Would be lieing if I didn't say I'm not a little scared of our Commonwealth Cup streak going into Friday. If Benkert gets in a rhythm we could be in trouble.
I hope you enjoyed Blacksburg potentpotables, as well as this.
It still blows my mind that Florida, Tennessee and Nebraska are among the worst teams in the country. FSU and Texas not much better.
I was actually excited when Nebraska was added to the Big Ten because I thought they'd be a legitimate powerhouse that would help bolster the reputation of the conference. I figured they'd be the opposite of what we knew Maryland and Rutgers were destined to be. I guess they haven't been terrible, but they haven't exactly been perennial title competitors. And you're right, it's hard to believe that those other teams you mention ever have bad seasons, especially all at once.
Probably. Bama or Auburn, Oklahoma, Clemson, so I guess Big 10 champ Ohio St gets in, as bullshit as it is. Maybe you'll get in if Oklahoma loses?
I think if it came down to a two loss Ohio State or a one loss Alabama, they’d put Alabama in.
Absolutely, and they should take Alabama in that case. But after the chaos last week the Buckeyes do have an outside chance again, if they get the right help. Of course they'd have to destroy Michigan (could happen) and somehow blow out undefeated Wisconsin, which seems unlikely. Unless Wisconsin gets shocked by Minnesota, the Big Ten champ has a fair shot at getting in. Bama beating Auburn or Oklahoma losing would help them. Bama, Clemson, Oklahoma, + Big Ten champ? I don't know. Miami, Auburn? This is gonna be interesting.
But what's up with Mercer? Other teams are playing conference games and what at least could have been legit games, and Bama plays an FCS school? LOL, saving the cupcakes for late in the year. They've only graduated one freshman class of players since WWII.
