Did you see Sportscenter reporting it too? Looks like it's true.
Fair enough. I don't think it's a bad hire by any means. He's definitely not as sexy a hire as some of the other people who were brought up, but he did well with his time at Rutgers. My first concern is that I remember him getting crap for not succeeding in the NFL because he had kind of a heavy hand with his players. With the reports of jokes being of a similar vein, I wonder how the locker room reacts to the hire.
It's a terrible hire for a few reasons. Tennessee has the most money in the SEC. They bought out Butch obviously, but they should be able to pay top dollar for a coach in any event. This hire means either A) they are paying Schiano top dollar, which is a gross miscalculation, or B) they are going cheap. I don't know which is worse, honestly. What's the contract that you'd be fine with for Schiano? I feel like anything more than $3million/year is ridiculous for Schiano (and the buyout should be minimal), yet Tennessee has to pay 150% of that at least when Miss St. is doing it, much less Florida and Georgia. There is no situation where the math here makes sense. They have enough money to pay a good coach. They are either paying Schiano too much or aren't spending enough.
This forgets that he was an absolute failure in Tampa mostly because of how he was perceived by players (and he's a similarly stupid optimist to Butch, with "chopping wood" and stuff like that) that he had like a .400 win percent in the Big East (ffs), and he has the stink of his time at Penn St (Sandusky). Nobody has any business hiring anybody within 100 miles of the Sandusky situation.
God, I hate this so much for so many reasons. He'd be fine for someone like Illinois, to build them to respectability (at a corresponding salary).

I forgot about Sandusky. Fuck that noise.
I can agree that Tennessee shouldn't be in a spot where they are hiring him yet. There should be time to go in another direction that would almost certainly be better.

On campus, The Rock has already been painted with "Schiano covered up child rape at Penn State". Reports state Schiano is backing off interest due to the intense backlash.
Don't get me wrong, I do not like the hire. However, if this blows up, I cannot imagine that good coaches will look at this behavior and say "I want those fans."

I am a big believer that Tennessee's fans are the best and worst thing about the job.
Ok. You guys have to admit this is crazy even for the carousel.
Jimbo Fisher to A&M would suck. I really hope that doesn't happen. Considering the media basically locked him into LSU's job last year, i hope this is just a repeat of that..
The plus side of the Greg Schiano-to-Tennessee hiring is that Texas will officially be college football's main UT once again!!
I don’t really intend to give anyone associated with the Penn State coaching staff/administration at that time the benefit of the doubt. However, the facts in this seem a little distorted. McQueary’s testimony was that Bradley told him that Schiano told Bradley that he saw Sandusky doing ____. That’s not exactly rock solid evidence, and would be inadmissible in any court of law (as it was in the Penn State case). Schiano of course denies that any of that happened.
My observation is that the Penn State stuff is not the true objection for most UT fans, although they’re using it to seem more self-righteous. I think the true objection is that they want someone better than Schiano.
Regardless, terrible hire and extremely puzzling why the AD thought it would be a good one.

Lots of people gonna act like they're jealous over Florida hiring Mullen when they were saying he wasn't good enough yesterday. At this point, I don't think the fan base is really going to be 100% happy with anyone.

As bad as Texas has been for the last couple of years, are you saying Tennessee has been substantially better to claim UT themselves? Or vice versa. Until one of them competes in their own conference, I think the UT title should be vacated.
Why does Tenn have so many problems hiring a coach? They can never get the right guy. It's been a mess every time since Fulmer left.
I am convinced Fulmer cursed the team.
In other news, Jimmy Hyams reports there was going to be a press conference tonight to officially announce Schiano. It has been cancelled. He stated he does not know if that means it is postponed or if the deal is totally off.

NCAA pls
Great point. Neither deserve their name's to be shortened into cool abbreviations. Wins = an excuse to be too lazy to say a three-syllable name
And an athletic director that doesnt take directions from boosters.
That's why i'm so interested to see how Greg Byrne will handle replacing Saban if the time comes. Not a single person knew Rich Rod was being hired here until the morning he was announced. But Bama boosters will be a lot more pushy than Arizona boosters.

Rumor mill going wild with everything from Currie resigning to Schiano being owed a buyout because the contract was already signed. I need to stay off the internet.
And I don't think any coach hired this season will have more success than Kelley at UCLA.
That's a remarkably good fit in a place that is low enough pressure that he can take the time to get his system in place, which does not happen overnight. But once he does get it together I think he will be able to recruit better than he ever could at Oregon.
