And is breaking the memorandum going to financially cost the department?
Unsure, guess it would depend on what the MOU says. An actual contract containing any buyout language would have to be approved by the Trustees, so it wouldn’t be something substantial like that, but I suppose the MOU might have contained a clause outlining a penalty for either side backing out.

I would assume that if Schiano tried to collect, UT could claim that failing to report child rape violated the MOU. Whether that’s true or not that’s really not a fight Schiano wants to have.

Or his actions towards his players at Rutgers and Tampa I suppose
At this point, I have a broken lamp in my closet...maybe that could be the coach.
Oh well, if we are going there, I have a used vacuum cleaner. It throughs out more dust than it picks up, but it’s orange. And it’s never been involved in a pedophile scandal. Please send best offer.
This is the big mistake. My buddy (a Mizzou undergrad and Tennessee Ph.D, whose wife is from Knoxville and they live in Johnson City and have season tickets to the Vols) showed me a graph of all revenue and expenses for all football programs in the SEC. Tennessee ranked right up there with Alabama in revenues, but spent a little more than half what 'bama did (something like $56 million spent for 'bama to $29 million for Tennessee). This gave them the most money in the conference.
To hire Schiano, you would have to do one of two things:
1. Pay him the going SEC rate - which I believe would be massively overpaying for him. Where is the demand for Greg Schiano? National media members claim he's turned down jobs before, but I know he was a candidate at Pitt when we hired Narduzzi (and we had resigned ourselves to that possibility), he was a candidate at USC when they kept Clay Helton. I don't know of any others. I'd place the going rate of SEC coaches around $4mil but it might be more. Schiano isn't worth that, which brings us to the second point...
2. Cheaping out on the hire - if you pay Schiano what he is worth, you, the school with the most money in the SEC, is paying a coach around 50% of the going rate in the conference. I saw a number of $7mil/year for Mullen at Florida, so you're paying like 28% of what Florida is paying. How will that play with the fanbase? It looks like you aren't even trying at that point.
I saw rumors that the decision was made that Campbell's buyout was too big ($9.4 million) and they couldn't get around that. That's the fatal miscalculation. You have the money, you need to do it. Now, because they went cheap originally, Campbell isn't even an option.
I think Vol Nation getting Schiano quashed is a bad, bad look. I mentioned the PSU stuff yesterday but that shouldn't be disqualifying for a job based on the evidence we have. But I also think that Currie got this so, so wrong, and the national media caping for Schiano is a bad look as well for them.
It's a mess of a situation overall.
And funny to me that the guy who rails against Twitter mobs, Clay Travis, started one of his own because he didn't like Schiano. What a jackass.

This whole situation has been something to behold. It was really amazing to see how quickly and intensely that the mob built against Schiano to include government officials and local businesses. I don't know that I have ever seen anything like it locally.
Your comment on demand speaks to a mistake it seems Currie made. I don't think Schiano was going to get snatched up by anyone this season. Frost, Kelly and Mullen are high demand guys. They were going to go somewhere this offseason, so I can see rushing to getting one of them under contract. I think Schiano would have been available in two or three weeks. Why do it now? It's like Currie set today as his deadline for an announcement and had to follow through. Mullen went to Florida, so it looks like Currie panicked and grabbed whatever low hanging fruit was available.
I also saw multiple reports that Campbell's buyout was the main stumbling block in getting him signed to a contract. As much as I would like to say that they should have went for it, a ton of people in Knoxville would have been furious that we dropped that amount of cash on someone that is 7-5 at Iowa State this year after going 3-9 last year. Once again, Tennessee's fanbase is its own worst enemy.
I am not really sure who I feels comes out looking the worst in all this. Regardless of the motivations behind it, the fanbase has zero chance of coming off as pure with this. At best, we look like a mob that got wrapped up in its own fury to run off a coach (and several other candidates in the process) over evidence that would never hold up in a court of law. At worst, we look like spoiler children who threw a fit because we didn't get the coach we wanted. Currie is either the guy who said he was going to hire someone with "the highest level of integrity" and ends up hiring a guy who has both the Penn State cloud and his own cloud of weird player interactions hanging over his head, or he's the guy who caved to his fanbase and/or boosters. I never thought an AD could be on the hot seat within six months of taking the job but here we are. Lastly, you have the national media who are putting in some strong takes to defend a guy who does have those clouds hanging over him. I generally enjoy Herbstreit and still do. Several people in Knoxville are ready to burn him at the stake after yesterday.
I had no idea who Clay Travis was until a couple months ago when a coworker said I should watch his reaction to one of Tennessee's games. I made it about three minutes and reported back to him to never, ever bring up Clay Travis around me again. He is fucking awful.

Currie's statement:
"As we began our search for our next head football coach earlier this month, I promised that I would pour all my energy and effort into this process.
I have followed Coach Schiano’s accomplishments throughout his career and have been fortunate to get to know him and his family over the last several years. As reported by the media, he was a leading candidate for our position. Among the most respected professional and college football coaches, he is widely regarded as an outstanding leader who develops tough, competitive teams and cares deeply about his student-athletes.
We carefully interviewed and vetted him, as we do candidates for all positions. He received the highest recommendations for character, family values and commitment to academic achievement and student-athlete welfare from his current and former athletics directors, players, coaching colleagues and experienced media figures.
Coach Schiano worked at Penn State from 1990-1995. Consequently, we, of course, carefully reviewed the 2012 investigation report by Louis Freeh. Coach Schiano is not mentioned in the Freeh report and was not one of the more than 400 people interviewed in the investigation. We also confirmed that Coach Schiano was never deposed and never asked to testify in any criminal or civil matter. And, we conferred with our colleagues at The Ohio State University, who had conducted a similar inquiry after the 2016 release of testimony. I know that Coach Schiano will continue to have great success in his coaching career and wish him and his family well.
I am grateful for your patience as our search for the next leader for the Tennessee football program continues, and I look forward to making that introduction soon."
But don't think the drama is over.
There are a lot of rumors revolving around this turning into a larger behind the scenes battle between boosters to gain control over the future of the program. From the rumors, both Schiano and Currie were favorites of the Haslams, and their opponents are striking to get Currie gone and one of their guys in place.

I get the Schiano wasn't a sexy hire, but his track record as Rutgers and OSU should be enough to warrant a shot a P5 job. The Sandusky related allegations were flimsy at best, and thrown out in court. Now who the hell are they gonna find that wants to deal with this incompetent athletic dept and idiotic fan base?

I was reading an article earlier today related to the calls for Currie's job. They touched on how Currie's handling of the situation also affects the appeal of the Tennessee job now as he is coming off like he bungled his first real responsibility, and nobody likes working for an idiot. Right now, I wish I could just reach out to the rest of the fanbase and tell them, "Unless there is something really, really off about the next guy, when it gets announced, shut the f*ck up and clap. I don't want to hear about their previous record. I don't want to hear how you don't think he can beat Saban. We used all our veto power up for the next ten years at least."
