A handful of quality house acts would elevate this festival even more.
I really hope not. For whatever reason, nostalgia in some cases? , a lot of people on Inforoo like house, lengthy buildups and such. Maybe it's because all that doesn't translate with alcohol as well as harder and wilder stuff, but I felt like there was way too much house last year for my tastes. I'm not saying generic shit, lots of it was deeper house or experimental or even ARCA who not exactly fitting the definition of straight house, nevertheless plays dancey Latin flavored house.
Even Squarepusher who I otherwise kind of dig hard played a mostly house-inspired set. I want more experimental shit at D4N that I'm not going to see very often. JMO
Who in last years lineup are you considering house?
I guess I don't consider things like Kaskade and Odesza house if that's who you're referring to.
Personally, I'd love to see some deep house and some techno incorporated into the lineup. Something like Rodhad would be great.
And of course, if they can somehow book either DJ Koze or Pantha du Prince, they'd have my heart forever.
But I already have a blind presale, so I'll be there anyway. I guess I should go ahead and look at booking something with free cancellation, just in case it's not downtown again.
I've already booked the hotel we stayed at last year. I'll book again if it moves somewhere far away from last year.
Ya, just did the same thing. $40 more than I paid last year for 3 nights though. Let me know if you notice the price drops at any point in the future. I'll do the same.
Yeah, Odessa kind of sometimes is, and Kaskade was pop house. But I thought Arca, Squarepusher, Sophie, Aphex Twin, Anklepants and even Nick Murphy in a lot of ways were techno-y and housey. I'm not saying I even disliked any of those sets, but none of them are really what I listen to. I know some would argue x is y and not house or whatever, but even some of trancier repetitive stuff for me sounds to be in more of a dance pop style. I'm like you. I have my ticket and I'm going regardless. I just hope they bring a little more obscure stuff (not necessarily rare) like they did with the rock.
Meh, I'd personally be pretty disappointed if Arcade Fire headlined D4N. I don't feel they fit the mold at all.
I agree. I don't think they'll be there for this reason.
I don't see why New Order or Butthole Surfers fit but Arcade Fire couldn't. Reflektor would have fit really well with the whole vibe. This new album seems to be all about technology, very DFN-y.
Most of Kaskade wasn't during SOPHIE or Arca but ok.
You're right, there was a 30min set change between SOPHIE and Arca, lol? Not sure what point you're trying to make.
Also, during that set change I did attempt to step outside and photograph Travis Scott but of course that auto-tune wanker was like 30min late so I just went and drank instead.
My point was seeing Kaskade or Travis Scott prevented none of us uncool kids from seeing Arca or SOPHIE if we wanted to. We're talking about how much Kaskade sucked at DFN and you show up like "hey guys don't you know Kaskade sucked at DFN??"

Ya, I think we just have a difference in the definition of house and techno.
I didn't see Nick Murphy, but everything else you listed, I would most definitely not consider house at all.
Either way, not important.
I can't wait to see what they have in store for us this year
Yeah man. I know most of that is technically not what most people call house. It's from a different generation from me, but I laugh at some of the old guys trying to call everything electronic - even stuff like STS9 - Techno. At least I can identify some of the dub, trap and drum and bass which is really my kids' generation shit.
I don't know where they're going with it this year. If they do bring back an elite and exclusive art installation like the Bjork VR, I hope to be lucky enough to get to go to whatever it is again. That was easily my Top 1 of the weekend and just an excellent experience in what was already a great festival. I was trying to think of some of the freakier acts who are known to employ eclectic shows or lighting. This is what I can come up with:
STS9 - Would be great for me to see them work with the curated level of the red stage. They are usually around everywhere, so it's not really an obscure act.
Sigur Ros - Absolutely fits the bill in ways that almost no one else can. I hope you get to see one or both of their shows in Austin next weekend unless you're going to Bonnaroo. They are doing that back catalogue, mid-September through mid-October run in Western Europe. They don't have any dates in December that I know about. This would easily be my favorite show of the festival, but I don't know that they go back to the proverbial well (Iceland) 2 years in a row.
There were a pretty good amount of Houston acts. I'd expect a few repeats there. I'd be down to see another version of Welcome to Houston anyway. For bigger/out of the region rap acts, they could go for the freak factor and book Young Thug. I personally wouldn't because he he's unreliable.
Tipper would be the DJ you'd think would fit in better than anyone at this festival. I saw a bunch of shit from Tipper and Friends a couple of weeks ago, and those light and stage shows are unchained. Ott would be cool to see and maybe Govinda if we're going super freaky DJ's.
I'm sure there will be some rock, punk and psychedelic as those elements have filled out the bill the last few years along with DJ's and electronica.
I think someone earlier mentioned Animal Collective. They would work, and I haven't seen them yet. Primus fits pretty great, but I'm sure they're already playing Houston. Maybe The Residents could be resuscitated? When they released The Mole Show, that shit was groundbreaking. Haha. I don't know if they do much live anymore. I haven't seen Quixotic in a few years, and they'd be ideal for the freak-show/carnival aspects. I think Thievery Corporation would work for the dynamic and ever changing styles of their live shows.
Hopefully we don't have to wait all the way to September for details man.

Ya, I wish I was seeing Sigur Ros soon, but I'm up in Idaho for the next 5 months. Only had the pleasure of seeing them once, 3 or so years ago. Their new show looks amazing though. I think they'd be a great fit for DfN.
I'm hoping the Avalanches don't take up a spot on the lineup. Their new album is terrible and their live show doesn't look too great.
That's just wrong.
The album itself was pretty great, if it's not your thing that's a different subject. Live it's extremely underwhelming unless you go into it knowing what you're gonna get. It's two vocalists covering an album full of features they weren't apart of. If you want to dance and sing/rap along with your favorite tracks, then you're good. If you're trying to hear a great live act or an accurate rendition of the album you're shit out of luck though.

lol it was a joke because everyone from inforoo went to kaskade
I started making a wish list and got a little carried away. Some of these are a little outside of DFN's wheel house and a few are not exactly realistic.

As mentioned, Arcade Fire have Dallas/Austin shows, but suspiciously do not have a Houston/Woodlands show on their schedule, which would make one think they're penciled in for Day For Night.
Meanwhile, they play at a festival in Buenos Aires, Argentina on Friday, December 15th. Is the 14 hour flight going to get them ready to headline Sunday night?
Sigur Ros played Dallas last night, with two (sold out) Austin shows starting today, but none scheduled in Houston area. Are two Austin sets enough to keep them from going to H-town in December?
Similarly to A.F., S.R. will be in South America for December, with their last date December 2nd in Bogota Columbia. Possibly too much of a gap for them to stop by Houston.
Jamiroquai's tour has been put on indefinite hold because lead singer Jay Kay had a spinal injury and is currently recovering from surgery. Unknown when he will be back to full health.
I don't want Arcade Fire at all. The Avalanches will be fine. Imagine if the fucked around and got someone like Moderat.
They are supposed to be going on hiatus for a little while in the fall. FWIW, the little I know about them, they consider the Moderat project to be the most accessible music of what they otherwise play in their other configurations and acts. I don't think they feel like it's their collective best work.
I would have no problem with Arcade Fire as one of the headliners. It's not what I expect from Day For Night, and it's not something I'm hoping for. But it will suck way less than Kaskade did.

Well I think they exhausted their stateside touring cycle anyways. It's not happening, unfortunately. I will take Cut Copy too. I'm not picky.
