Almost as jealous of y'all going to this as I am of the people going to Desert Daze
Not sure where you're at, but Houston is one of the cheapest big cities to travel to and stay in. Fozzie said yesterday he picked up $50 flights from Tampa. I'm just going to drive because I can get there in about 4:40 and would have a rental car. As noted above, with fees (for sleeps 8) for 3 nights at a downtown penthouse was less than $900. Not many people will need that big of an option, but it's still dirt cheap for what we got.
For 2017, the Day for Night folks decided to tack on an auxiliary event billed as a “summit,” collecting a hodgepodge of artists and activists for a Friday speaking series. Naturally, it’s wall-to-wall heavy hitters: LGBTQ activist Chelsea Manning; avant garde artist and musician Laurie Anderson; Putin-hating musician and activist Nadya Tolokonnikova (Pussy Riot); and tech artist Lauren McCarthy. Special performances by angelic souls such as Solange and Earl Sweatshirt will cap off the Friday summit. The speaker portion is a separate ticketed event, but the lineup makes it just as impressive as the “regular” festival; after all, as the press release puts it, “At the Day for Night Summit, we will all be participants in shaping our collective future,” which is definitely something you want to be part of.
The release also described the expanded 2017 festival as the “beginning” of a longterm plan to explode Day for Night to become a multi-venue, five-day event. Considering the sprawling, impressive lineup listed below, we’re curious to see how they’ll manage to one-up themselves in years to come. Tickets are available here, with 2-day passes starting at $205.
Following up on this becoming a 5 Day Multi-Venue festival, no way I'm ever not going to go now.
As for my initial top acts:
Nine Inch Nails * Laurie Anderson * St. Vincent Pretty Lights * Shabazz Palaces * Lil B * G Jones *
* Have seen before.
Shit I don't know: Cardi B, Sky Ferreira, Gas, Venetian Snares, Princess Nokia, Kimbra, Mount Kimble, Corbin, Shlohmo, The Album Leaf, DJ Tennis, Tim Hecker, Forest Swords, Babyfather, Andy Stott, Jessy Lanza, Roni Size, Jlin (except that cmack likes them) and everything below Priests on the lineup.

Holy god, I cannot even imagine the craziness of a five-day festival of this caliber.
Agreed on Houston looking to be cheap, makes this much more doable than any fest in NYC, Chicago, LA, even Miami.

What?! That's a long dont-know list; damn, you've got some awesome discoveries ahead of you. Get excited. From your don't-knows, I most recommend: Princess Nokia, Tim Hecker, Mount Kimble, Andy Stott, Jessy Lanza, and Jlin

You'll find the food culture has exploded there too, so you can eat very well for pretty cheap. The festival itself had a lot of great food options last year - tons of fused cuisines like Latin-Korean, Indian-Mexican and whatever. Since you're bringing the old lady along, a Christmas shopping trip to the Galleria is kind of a must do if you haven't ever been to it.
Must sees: Thom Yorke, St Vincent, Tyler The Creator, Nina Kraviz, of Montreal, Mount Kimbie, Tim Hecker, Babyfather, Andy Stott,
Want to see: NIN, Solange, Justice, James Blake, Jamie xx, Pussy Riot, GYBE, Sky Ferreira, GAS, Lil B, Venetian Snares x Daniel Lanois, Princess Nokia, Kimbra, Corbin x Shlohmo, Forest Swords, Shabazz Palaces, Jessy Lanza, Priests, Bjarki, Demdike Stare, Marcus Marr I made a Spotify playlist if anyone's interested (notably missing Thom Yorke):

For sure. I'm excited to start digging in. We listened to Autechre last night and thought the 2 hour album was very entertaining. Looks like a lot of U.K and Texas acts just from looking at some of the bottom rung stuff. I might have seen Princess Nokia on a stream once, but I don't know any of the others. So thanks for the recommendations. What also looks interesting without having listened to any of it is A/C Jeep, Narcons, Hoodcelebrityy, Santa Muerte and Babyfather.

Top acts:
Nine Inch Nails Thom Yorke Justice (not a particularly big fan but I've never seen them) Tyler the Creator James Blake Pretty Lights Jamie XX Nina Kraviz GYBE En Vogue Lil B Venetian Snares x Daniel Lanois Mount Kimbie DJ Tennis Tim Hecker Forest Swords Roni Size Priests Bjarki Rabit x House of Kenzo
still tons of acts to research as well. my focus is on techno, industrial, techhouse sounds, so if anyone has any recommendations it's appreciated. Rhythmic/beat driven stuff is prefered but I can get down with the weirdness as well.

Man I want to go to this so bad.
Nine Inch Nails is my favorite band an any excuse to see them is worth it. Venetian Snares ia a favorite of mine, and never ever tours anywhere accessible to me anymore. This may be my last realistic chance to see him. That Thom Yorke set will be super rare. Then Justice, Pretty Lights, and so much throughout the undercard is great.
I wish I could've known this lineup 8 months ago and saved my money to do this instead of Panorama and Hulaween. I don't think I can make this happen but I really want to
I remember being in this EXACT same predicament last year when Aphex Twin announced to headline. I really need to start leaving space in my budget for this trip.
Must-sees: Solange, Justice, Jamie xx, Nina Kraviz, James Blake, Gas, Bjarki Would like to see: NIN, Thom Yorke, St. Vincent, Tyler, Phantogram, GYBE, Sky Ferreria, Venetian Snares x Daniel Lanois, Mount Kimbie, DJ Tennis, Tim Hecker, Jlin, Priests
It's crazy to me that a lineup I enjoy so much has so much I'm not too familiar with on first glance. Excited to dig deeper.
I don't get the Nina Kraviz hype, nearly every set I've heard from her she fucks up the mix numerous times. Loads better female DJs. Her only saving grace is she'll sometimes end sets with jungle/DnB.

Some straightforward beats @ 120 are what was missing last year. She might not be the "best", but she's definitely a suitable dance act and a nice alternative to Kaskade or whatever.
"Thom Yorke performs in a live mix with Nigel Godrich and visual artist Tarik Barri."
So is it a b2b with Nigel? Or like a live electronic performance (not radiohead songs) with Nigel?
It's this:
He's only done this show 8 times and none of which were in the US, so this could potentially be super rare. I'm hoping it means he'll play some more shows and do at least a small tour (and possibly release a new album).

Must See: Thom Jamie XX James B St Vincent Mount Kimbie Andy Stott Of Montreal (one of my first ever shows at the Cats Cradle, back when I was 16/17; their live performances are fucking gold) Godspeed You! (dependent on if they end up headlining Big Ears & I'm able to go, in which case they'd be moved down to "Want to See")
Want to See: Justice NIN Solange (but will likely end up skipping her since I just caught her show at Hopscotch) Tyler Phantogram Pussy Riot Nina Kraviz Perfume Genius Laurie Anderson En Vogue Princess Nokia Kimbra Shabazz Shlohmo Tim Hecker Jessy Lanza Priests Jlin Bjarki Marcus Marr
Excited to do some research on the bottom ~quarter (don't know most below Marcus Marr) of the lineup!
And am of course open to suggestions on what to check out.

At one point, I am disappointed in all of you for not being more hype for The Jesus Lizard. At another point, I have no idea (aside from the Texas connection) as to why they are on this lineup.
