Btw, seen: Solange James Blake, half a set (don't want to talk about it - he was in one of those screwy time slots of Roo 2014 where stages were switched last minute, and I went to two wrong spots before making it to his set...I wasn't all too sober, either, so the wandering took serious, precious minutes away from me) Cash Cat Of Montreal Shabazz Palaces

I kinda wish there was another Welcome to Houston set. I thought having that open the main stage was a perfect way to start the fest.
On a different note, has anyone compared the number of artists this year to last year now that we know who's playing Friday?
It just seems like a lot of music for just 2 days and 4 stages. But maybe that's because I want to see just about everything on the lineup.
I for one am quite alright with the no W2H, they're all cool dudes and have good songs but they all play so much around here and it takes up too big a spot.
As for the #s it doesn't seem like there's too many more, having the different people Friday might be the only difference.
Ya, I think just do a tight 20-25 minute set that covers some of the hits. No need for a 45-60 min set.
I'd still like to see it. It's likely the only way I'll ever them again.
I fully agree. If Houston was 24 hours like every fn city ought to be, I'd go see Paul Wall Saturday. Flip is probably my favorite Houston rapper and ST. I understand Jim's point that he's there and they play all the time. It's like Juvenile or Mannie Fresh or Mystikal or Fredia here. You could always see them. But it's a treat to get the parade of all those guys and then like Devin the Dude, Bun B, Z-Ro, DJ Mike Watts and shit. That set made my top 10 and probably top 5 last year. I gotta go back and check.
Edit to say I didn't do a top 10. I did memorable. And Welcome was one of the 4 acts that hit me with Bjork VR, Tycho and RTJ. Fn right.

Went last year expecting Buttholes and Ariel Pink to by my favs, but they were def not. Ariel did most of his new album (which just dropped this week) which def didn't feel completed. Kinda bummed me out expecting stuff from previous two albums I had been obsessing over. Buttholes had sound issues make them super late and the Travis Scott douches in the crowd messed the vibe up. It was still a blast though.
My top five from last year:
John Carpenter (my #1 def) Marcel Khalife Aphex Twin Anklepants Jesus & Mary Chain
Honorable mentions: Buttholes Chelsea Wolf Squarepusher Tycho
Slight change in job roles opens my schedule up some; looks like Im in on this! Pretty amped about it, especially after lurking the D4N threads the last 2 years
You guys going over this year or bringing the ole lady? Looks to be a lot of trippy shit on the lineup with The Autumn Leaf, Pretty Lights, Gas, Jamie xx, Godspeed, Venetian Snares & Daniel Lanois, Forest Swords, etc. Hope to see you there if you can do it.
Moss - glad to hear you will be making it. You won't be disappointed. I'll see you at Voodoo if not before.

You wanna talk trippy shit? You better go and let Tim Hecker melt your mind!
Gracias. That's where I'm at DJ Tennis/Tim Hecker on going through the stuff I don't know. I'll be continuing to work through the lineup this weekend. Speaking of trippy, one of the guys my kids hang out with who works in production had been looking into recent works by some of the light studios and artists. Consequently, much of last night was spent going through some of the light artists. We looked at about 5 of them so far. Here are a few of the cooler ones we might see:
Matthew Schreiber (Garnet Cross, looks like the MCP from original Tron movie)

Longinus and I might go, it will be a last minute thing if we do. My girl has almost zero interest in this music and hates the cold. lol
Last year was prob the best fest I've ever been to pound for pound but this lineup isn't Sargecentric like last year. If I had bought that blind earlybird I would go but it's a lot of money this time of year.
Keeping my res @ the Doubletree just in case though.

i'm probably getting this. is the booze free at this thing because if it is its a no brainer.
I don't think it is, as they don't advertise so. But, I don't remember if they advertised that last year.
Last year they did advertise something along the lines of free drinks and snacks iirc. I haven't really found much info on this year's Friday except for the lineup.
I want to go, but I'm having a hard time justifying paying more for Friday than I did for my whole GA ticket. Drinks could definitely push me over the edge.
Agreed. I just don't see the value in the cost of Friday without free booze. And even then, it's more than the G.A. was for the festival. I don't know. The other factor that's bugging me is trying to figure out if I'm going to have to DIY the light installations again or if I'm going to be able to schedule a couple of the shows. I missed all the live performances of the light installations last year because the musical schedule was too full. So I just walked around the different areas when I had a few minutes here and there to go immerse in that shit rather than getting the artist's perspective and instruction. Obviously I'll have to wait for the schedule to be released before I can know - but it's still on my mind.
The other thing that's bugging me is the idea that the Friday lectures and performances are a small step toward the eventual decision to do a 5 day mega fest. Is it going to be a few days of lectures and talks (e.g. SxSW) or will they run simultaneous to music days (Essence Fest)? Will this be a 4 day music festival and one day of lectures or what? I never could find the press release that Houstonia Magazine referenced in their lineup article where they mentioned the future plans. I'm pretty much in on Day for Night going forward, so I'd like to know more than I do at the moment.
To be fair though, it looks so expensive to us since we jumped on the super cheap tickets. Compared to the regular GA tickets, it's in line and is half the price.
I wonder when they'll put up blind presales this year. Looking at my email, I bought mine on 12/9/16, before the fest even started! I'll be getting one as soon as they go up.
After the top 10 or so, who's worth checking out that has vocals to their music? I'm familiar with Kimbra, Of Montreal, Shabazz Palaces, Lil B. After digging deeper into the lineup (which is really just me taking stabs and random artists), Now that the hype has died down I'm beginning to think this fest is too instrumental and bleep-bloopy for my tastes.
