“38 year old white guy pissed thing doesn’t cater to him”
I thought it was a good snarky read. I didn't read the tone as pissed off, more of an acceptance of the way things are. He actually seems to give props to Coachella for not booking bands/rock stuff, since it doesn't make sense for the Coachella fanbase.
Maybe I misread the tone but it came across as a light hearted and accurate reading of the current festival market.

“14. I’m not going to Coachella. I am 38 years old. You think I’m getting on a plane to see fucking ODESZA? Come on.”

And that's a poor choice of band to go after. ODESZA isn't my first choice but there's many worse choices.

100%
I thought the article basically reflected the thread title. Rock is dead, the younger kids want EDM and hip hop. The lineup reflects that. But I posted it and the headline uses a snarky quote, so it has no merit I guess.

Also Jamiroquai totally has 2 hits.
In the states they have one hit and it was nearly 20 years ago.
I dig them and want to see them. But I guarantee you that set will be drawing flies.

I think he was referring to Lunchpail.
Nah, he has many faults, but being a 38 yo white guy isn’t one of them.
Those who want to catch sets by Jamiroquai or Soulwax or SZA or The Weeknd or Kygo or David Byrne have that option. Everyone wins. It will still sell out regardless. It’s hard to make everyone happy, but I feel like they still keep multiple, evolving bases in mind.

There’s plenty of guitars on the lineup even if they’re not up top, which is where any of the good shit is going to be anyway. Get used to seeing most bands in the sun or in empty tents opposing headliners. It’s better that way anyway
The recent lineups aren't on par with the classics, but Coachella certainly seems like the only one of the big multigenre U.S. fests that attempts to throw a bone to the diehards while also pandering to the masses.
I agree, I just miss the days when it was more than a bone.

not disputing your point at all, but I wish the big multigenre U.S. fests still went one step further than just throwing a bone to the diehards and instead challenged their attendees with artists that push the boundaries on music and art. as in don't just give me what I want, also give me things I didn't know I wanted, or maybe some things that are so far out there that I hate them, but at least I saw it and felt something.

Great point but the issue seems to be that most of those attendees don't wanna be challenged at all.

I get it 100%. People pay big money and take a lot of time to attend something like Coachella. We all want to have a good time for our money. I can't be critical of people for wanting some familiarity.
Just did the count - the artists behind 9 of Stereogum's top 20 albums of 2017 (and 4 of the top 6) are on the lineup this year. It's almost like festival lineups and promoters cater to tastemakers' sensibilities?
(Priests - 3, Perfume Genius - 4, SZA - 5, War on Drugs - 6, Brockhampton -11, St. Vincent - 14, Japanese Breakfast - 17, Vince Staples -18, Moses Sumney - 19)
The fact that he doesn’t get Jamiroquai and Soulwax says a lot about the writer. Like you would think since he’s old he would at least understand those bookings. He also makes no comment on Yuma acts and thinks that King Krule is out of place here despite releasing one of the best “indie” albums last year. This guy is very out of touch.

Eminem is a bad headliner. The Weeknd was just there and is too similar to Beyonce. Beyond that I think the lineup is as good as previous years. I actually like SZA and HAIM more than Lorde and The XX.

Coincidentally also 9 from Pitchfork's top 20, not that Pitchfork is complaining.

The main issue with The Weeknd is that it’s unclear whether or not he’ll have new material. If he does, it’s an okay booking but if not it’s a wash.

Well when it comes to Roo, it's no longer a bone, just a Rag n Bone Man
