Eminem is a bad headliner. The Weeknd was just there and is too similar to Beyonce. Beyond that I think the lineup is as good as previous years. I actually like SZA and HAIM more than Lorde and The XX.
The main issue with The Weeknd is that it’s unclear whether or not he’ll have new material. If he does, it’s an okay booking but if not it’s a wash.
Why? He hasn’t played on Starboy’s touring cycle yet and this could just as likely be a victory lap before he goes into hibernation.
Also, I don't get how everyone is making it sound like THIS is the year where rock acts finally went away. By my count, nearly half of the second line are rock or indie pop acts (8 out of 18), when only one QUARTER were the same last year (4 out of 16). If anything, this is a step forward toward catering to "bands." Undoubtedly the number one trend of this year is the continued migration from EDM artists to rap/hip hop artists. For fans of rock, this is a classic "left pocket / right pocket" scenario - I count 8 ER artists (electronic or rap, also there's an emergency room joke here) this year, vs. 9 last year, so "more hip hop, UGHHHH" had pretty much no impact on rock acts year over year.
No matter how you cut it, I can't see how this year is a worsening of a trend from previous years when taking the whole bill into account - to come to that conclusion you need to be solely focused on the headliners. It's lazy journalism to say "this is the year pop took over" because of the headliners. Festival headliner booking is kind of a crazy thing; sometimes it works out and you book GnR and LCD reunions, sometimes you book Eminem and The Weeknd. GV had a tough time finding a third headliner this year and booked Eminem. I'm not defending this as the greatest Coachella lineup ever and it's far from perfect, but it's a massive yawn to see all the "tastemakers" criticizing it for doing away with rock when based on the second liners, it's possibly a step forward back towards rock.

He played 51 shows in the US last year (per setlist.fm) and he probably won't be premiering new material. It's just lazy and I think anyone who wanted to see him on the Starboy cycle could've easily seen him last year.

The Weeknd could actually make this headlining set awesome by playing a bunch of older OG stuff.

Boring or not I’d imagine there will still be an interest for him. Especially if he doesn’t play as much this year. I just don’t find it so necessary for an act like The Weeknd to premier a new show considering he hasn’t even played the last one yet. I doubt those who choose to see him here over everything else really care all that much anyways. I agree that it’s lazy, but that pretty much seems to be the trend this year.

Right, it will definitely work in that market and it'll be packed, I just think it's very unlike Coachella. And this is coming from someone who has seen The Weeknd three times and is a big fan of his.

Coachella did book Jack White and RHCP a year after everyone else did in 2015 and 2013, respectively, so it's not completely unorthodox.
I have more of an issue with booking Eminem. With Beyoncé and The Weeknd already locked up they didn't need to go down that road. There's really no excuse for it.

I'm sure RHCP was far from their first choice behind the Stones.

With Beyonce booked, I doubt the Weeknd was their first choice either, new album or not. Maybe they had him locked in long ago and then Beyonce had to delay by a year and they were kind of stuck.
Haven't given my take yet but yeah. their worst lineup in quite some time. Saturday has like 4 acts I think are great gets. Friday is probably the strongest. Sunday has half really good Yuma acts like MCDE, Omar-S, Talaboman, and Peggy Gou, but then 4 terrible acts that insomniac/sound night club books in the area every 2 months as is; fuggin Capriati, Liebing, and Jamie Jones. All they need is Moudaber and it's an insomniac event. You'd think that with bad headliners they'd step their game up with the undercard but wow a Sunday with Russ, Cardi B, Illenium, French Montana, Louis the Child, etc on the first two lines... that is fucking terrible.
Edit: HAIM, Odesza, and SZA as the subs??? Cmon smh.
Rock (5): St. Vincent, War on Drugs, alt-J, Fleet Foxes, A Perfect Circle
The fact that you put A Perfect Circle and alt-J in the same category hurts lol. It's not because a band is a band that they're a rock band. Having that said, Coachella has never really been a rock-festival, they've always leaned more towards alternative/indie acts but the last few years.. Well yeah
No judgment call from me on this, but Randall Colburn of COS is condemning Philip Anschutz again this year. Apparently a portion of your money may well be going to fund Republicans.
Prepare for some déjà vu: The day after Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival released its 2017 lineup, criticism of the festival’s billed acts transformed into vitriol for its CEO, Philip Anschutz, who was discovered to have donated more than $1 million to anti-LGBTQ and other conservative efforts during the 2016 election cycle. Well, just yesterday we were treated to the festival’s 2018 lineup and today The Fader is here with a list of all the Republican scumbags and Super PACs he buttered up in 2017.
Among those that benefitted from Anschutz’s coffers include Senator Cory Gardner, a pro-gun politician who spoke out against those trying to pass gun control laws after October’s Las Vegas shooting, which left 59 dead; Congressman Scott Tipton, who opposes both same-sex marriage and abortion; US Representative Mike Coffman, a birther and anti-abortion advocate; pro-life Senator Deb Fischer; and Paul Ryan, whose villainy needs no introduction.
Anschutz funneled his biggest donations through The Anschutz Corporation, which gave $138,000 to the National Republican Senate Committee. Chaired by Gardner, the organization aims to boost the Republican senate majority. In total, his donations total $187,300.
Last year, Anschutz responded to reports regarding his donations by saying he “unequivocally supportthe rights of all people without regard to sexual orientation,” calling claims that he was anti-LGBTQ “fake news.” Gee, wonder where he learned that phrase?
Anschutz, nor Coachella, have released a statement as of this writing.

This is again a much larger issue that entails all of AEG over Coachella, but hey, labeling him "Coachella CEO" is easy clickbait.
They (or at least Randall) obviously have issues with him personally. You kind of can't get away from AEG here either, but the hit-piece doesn't say if AEG Live or Goldenvoice or any other arm donated in addition to what he gave personally along with Anschutz Corp. This is $187,000 from Anschutz. There was a link in the article (see below) that goes to another one which shows the donations. Clearly there are some unsavory - to me - motherfuckers getting some money.
Without research I count 30 acts I'd be happy to see, which is pretty high in my books. Of those, almost 1/3 are from the top 2 lines. There might not be a big surprise reunion or anything either, but Jamiroquai and Soulwax alone are enough "wow factor" for me, too.
TL;DR - I agree that 2/3 headliners are meh, but I'd be stoked for a lineup like this near me. Osheaga usually gets a decent amount of crossover with Coach so I'll be crossing my fingers for the good stuff... but I'm pretty sure it just means we'll be getting Eminem'd
I’m kinda glad they didn’t book a mediocre Arcade Fire tour for instance just for the sake of including “indie rock band”. I’d rather see The Weeknd at this point, personally.
Edit: I just can’t really think of any active rock headliners outside of Foo Fighters who I’d want this year.

I agree tbh. There really isn't any big rock act that would be a good headliner that hasn't headlined in the past 5 years. And if they booked one of those bands again it would have been seen as lazy. Not that these headliners besides Beyonce are inspired choices but it fits the demo more.

I’m realizing that Radiohead was the only repeat headliner in the past 4 lineups (not counting Beyoncé obviously). That’s pretty impressive and an objectively good thing.
Edit: I just can’t really think of any active rock headliners outside of Foo Fighters who I’d want this year.
there just aren't that many. metallica for me maybe, NIN if you consider them rock and/or a headliner. that's about it. even the foo fighters i'm over seeing live.
if i'm at a major fest i'd be much more stoked to see beyonce/gaga/taylor swift/katy perry, or any other big pop headliner, over most guitar band headliners. just to see something different and fun.
I could see an old rock act like Pearl Jam, Metallica, or FF headlining next year for 20th (or as in most cases with anniversaries, nothing will be any different). It’s also just time to bump AM and Tame Impala if we are in such desperate need for rock headliners. This year’s lineup just makes perfect sense given the course of popular music.

I feel there has been too much time between records for AM to be Coachella headliner unless they have an undeniable smash with the next album coming up. Tame Impala seems like they will get that headliner spot before AM.
I hear you eversoslowly, but as long as information like that is available, I prefer it sees the light of day. They own Buku and help book Jazz Fest, so like I said, I can't get away from them in New Orleans unless I wanted to curtail going to shit I want to go to.

If AM have one single that does as well as Do I Wanna Know or R U Mine then I'm willing to bet at least one of the big four gives them the bump

I honestly see Lolla giving them a headliner spot this year if they are doing US festivals.
