Yeah Yeah Yeahs couldn't even fill half the Barclays Center in 2013 and they are WAY off the radar of the 18-25 demo so no way they'd headline. Even having them play opposite a headliner is a stretch at this point.
You're right. I have to keep reminding myself that I'm old and that there are a lot of artists I think are more relevant than they are thanks to the perception-altering ravages of time.
That said, I don't know that them playing opposite a headliner would be out of the question. I mean, we've had bands like M83 and My Morning Jacket as counter-headliners the past few years. I love both those bands, but I don't believe either one could sell out an arena, here, and I think YYY - especially in New York - would be more of a draw.
M83 has a better appeal to the younger crowd than MMJ or YYY's. MMJ, I think, is still probably the bigger ticket draw as they've headlined MSG twice and played Forrest Hills stadium as well.
Some other hopefuls that I think are getting their NYC area dates out of the way this fall:

Gov Ball did this themselves back in 2016. Y'all are teasing in the worst way.
Not sure they were ever in play but LCD Soundsystem appear to be out given their newly announced tour dates.
Yeah I feel like after the 300 shows they'll have played at Brooklyn Steel by the end of the year they might cool off the NYC market for a bit.
I would be psyched if they were involved, given that I will never, ever turn down a chance to see LCD Soundsystem live, but I'd bet they wouldn't even be headlining material at a GovBall at this point. The Panorama set was a big deal because it was their comeback, but, yeah, the saturation would lead to a smaller fest draw, it seems to me.
I'm sure not all of these artists signed a multi-fest deal, but I wonder if this means we can rule out the likes of Portugal.The Man, St. Vincent, Anderson Paak, & Kendrick.

There was a fair amount of crossover between Hangout and Gov Ball last year. Both fests had Chance the Rapper, Phoenix, Marshmello, The Head and the Heart, A$AP Ferg, and Franz Ferdinand, among others. There likely are some multi-fest clauses in place, but it can be tricky to figure out which acts they cover.
I hope we can rule out Chainsmokers as well. But I have a weird feeling in my stomach that GB's getting Halsey.

Florence coming back in a headlining spot would be cool, but I'm still holding out for Rih. Chainsmokers tweeted "Gonna be an amazing festival season..." and I really hope Gov Ball dodged this bullet

If there's a fest that's perfect for The Chainsmokers, that would be the Meadows. That being said, I expect a fair amount of crossover between Gov Ball and Hangout Fest. I'm assuming you can rule out The Killers, AWOLNATION, AJR, Nothing But Thieves as they all have area dates in Jan/Feb (though...that doesn't always exclude acts). I'd imagine Grouplove, St Vincent, Cold War Kids, Portugal The Man, Halsey are all likely.

Tyler and Vince at the Theater at MSG on 2/23. Hopefully this is outside of whatever clause could kick in. Highly doubt Pano brings em back so hopefully Gov Ball got one of the two but I'm greedy and these two are so good so I want both
