All the old people must have been waiting for Third Eye Blind. Haha. That wasn’t an 18 and under crowd.
I dont care what anyone says my 34 year old self got down to that set
Same here! I also feel old as fuck as I realized that, almost literally, I saw Third Eye Blind the same weekend in 1998 at Jones Beach. They were playing the 92.3 K-Rock (remember THAT station) Dysfuncational Family Picnic alongside Green Day, The Offspring, Fuel, Soul Asylum, Ben Folds Five and a solo/drugged out Scott Weiland when he was touring on his (under-rated in my opinion) 1998 album 12 Bar Blues. Ah the 90's...

I think that's also just a reflection of music writers realizing they're getting older and their tastes are no longer aligning with the youth. Happens to all of us. Gaslight just announced a Stone Pony Summerstage show in Aug which I make be up for making the trek for, that set was so good.
I think that's a piece of it, but I think there's been a fundamental shift in what festivals are focused on and what younger consumers value. Festivals used to be either a showcase of one particular genre of music or a diverse encapsulation of what was buzzing and on the rise, while paying tribute to the bands and artists that have become foundational parts of the music scene.
The younger generation started going to festivals more as a social experience. If you're a teen in Chicago or New York, or a college kid in southern California, festivals represent a chance to meet up with your friends and a whole new pool of young people to party -- and sure, there are some acts they want to see, but the primary driver is that experience. It's the new spring break.
That's a huge shift from the taste maker approach that used to inform festivals, and is part of why booking has shifted towards favoring whoever is at the top of the Spotify charts. And when you look at the crowds drawn by rock acts, and legacy performers, you haven't to ask if you can blame them for that? When Blur and Stone Roses struggle to draw a crowd at Coachella, and bands like Squeeze play to a few hundred people -- you start to see that we're in the minority for these larger scale festivals.
I think it's going to take a crash or a re-emergence of mid-scale specialty festivals to really change that dynamic. In the meantime, let's just hope that older consumers continue to generate enough revenue (through VIP and food/bev sales) to keep justifying the alternative programming that we enjoy at festivals like this.
Hell of a weekend. Saturday and Sunday were packed as shit, but never felt overwhelming. Surprisingly, I felt like I could count the number of encounters with obnoxious, fucked up kids on one hand. My only real complaint, like jorge said, was the litter. Holy fuck. Kids leave their parents sight for the first time and forget how to pick up after themselves. It was actually kinda off-putting at one point. Oh, and the security line to get in around 230PM Saturday afternoon was *terrible*. I'd never experienced anything like it before at this fest.
Thoughts: So happy the weather cooperated, for the most part. I was at Travis Scott and the downpour during "Goosebumps" was amazing. Hope everyone who was at Gaslight enjoyed the rain as much as we did. I do feel fests jumped the gun on Travis headlining, especially since he hasn't dropped Astroworld, but the demand is absolutely there. Pusha T was impeccable. The acapella opening to "IYKYK" was so good and DAYTONA sounds amazing live. His show is gonna be even better when it's just the instrumental backing up Push. Was hoping for "Adidon" but it's all good. Everyone chanting "Fuck Drake" at the set will be listening to Scorpion lmao. Also, only a handful of people around me knew "Grindin'" at his and N.E.R.D's show; Kids: this is unacceptable. Speaking of N.E.R.D, so happy to have seen these dudes live. Pharrell is in his mid-40's but you'd never be able to tell. "Anti Matter" is a hell of a way to start a show. I think I'm in love with Tash Sultana.
1. N.E.R.D - classic. I think the only songs they did off NOERD were "1000" and "Lemon." They didn't do "Lightning Fire..." as someone asked before, but more than made up with it with everything else. The dance party for "Lemon" was amazing 2. Pusha T 3. YYYs - so cool to see them on the main, and the show deserved a better crowd than they got. This can be said for almost all the Friday shows 4. Tash Sultana - watching her work on stage is a fucking sight. Jesus 5. Travis Scott 6. GoldLink 7. Jack White 8. Kali Uchis 9. Kelela 10. 2 Chainz - Hits from start to finish. He deserved better poster placement and a better time slot, but he killed it. Stopped his show twice (maybe three times?) for people who passed out to get them medical attention. "Next time, I'm gonna act like I ain't even see it" lmao 11. Damian Marley - only positive vibes for an hour and 15 minutes. So good 12. Silk City - hope Founders keeps booking this kind of dance music, instead of the Marshmellos 13. Eminem - a lot better than I expected going into it. AND WE GOT "PATIENTLY WAITING" plus a mini 50 set. This alone was worth attending Em's set 14. Shawn Mendes 15. Maggie Rogers 16. Aminé - hearing "If you ain't black don't say it..." take the audience by surprise during "Caroline" was satisfying 17. LANY 18. Halsey 19. Khalid - super underwhelming, imo 20. Wolf Alice

Hell, yes. It actually started during a song the chorus of which is, "I never felt so strange / Standin' in the pounding rain." It couldn't have been more perfectly timed.

I was maybe three people from the front close to dead center the whole time. If people bounced or didnt show their loss. They were up against Post Malone, so I am sure he probably had the biggest crowd of the day.
Alrite I think the major pros and cons are pretty much out there already sooooo GovBall 2019......I got Kanye, Florence and rap/edm act I have never heard of
Finishing up the YYYs stream now. As if their crowd wasn't small enough, it looks like after Heads Will Roll a SHITLOAD of people bounced.
Everyone in my group loved Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but one member of our group was looking for any excuse to dip out early for a good spot for Glitch Mob. So them leaving the stage for a few minutes, to then do a pseudo-encore with "Date With The Night", was all the pause he needed. I still jumped to that song while fifty feet away.
Aside from all the kids, I think some of the logistics could stand for some improvement. Do the majority of the attendees enter from the West side of the island (where the ferry and bridge empty off into)? If so, that definitely needs some revamping as the lines really swell and for those who plunked down the $ for VIP, there didn't seem to be a whole lot of organization/direction as to where they could enter. Some better exit traffic directing definitely needs to happen. The lockers should NOT be right by the exit/entrance as that adds to the bottleneck even more.
I say all this as a fan and, even if I may not attend all 3 days or at all next year just due to aging out and the music landscape changing, I think it's great we have a festival that's here to stay in the NYC area after nearly a decade of botched attempts (shout-out to Catalpa, All Points West and presumably Panorama).

When Radiohead played Lolla it started raining during the first chorus of identikit right when Thom sang “broken hearts make it rain”
Was anyone on this board at James Blake? I really wanted to find his setlist cause he played some songs I had never heard (particularly these more upbeat technoish sounding ones). Does anyone know the names and/or know where i could find a setlist?
EDIT: Nevermind, found it on setlist.fm and they were new songs
Enjoying the recording of the Chvrches stream quite a bit. Especially Lauren's outfit.
The mix on this stream kind sucks. Theres zero bass. I can assure you it was much better in person.
She was so great and worked so hard to get the crowd going but the Eminem campers killed the mood a bit. Especially when the beat drops in Clearest Blue it was kinda sad, at any Chvrches stand alone show everyone is going absolute nuts during that beat drop and only a fourth of the crowd, maybe, was that into it at the Gov Ball set

My wife and I watched the set on tv. The sound was off and yeah that crowd was shit! Like you said maybe a fourth of the crowd was in to it
Chvrches singer is awesome. Her stage presence and banter is so unique, and she takes no shit from anyone.
It's so great to see, because the first two times I saw them, she hadn't quite come into her own as a performer, yet - her voice was still great, but she stood, stationary, at the microphone stand throughout the entire set. Now, she commands the stage and really gets into it, and it's a lot of fun to watch.

She's a great frontwoman. The set really took a dip with me when that Martin guy did his two songs, he has almost no presence at all.

When I saw him, he played live edits of some songs to make them more dance-y/techno-y. Not sure if that's what he did at Gov Ball.

Yeah, it's a little rough - he has a good enough voice, but there's definitely a charisma gap, there. That said, "Under the Tide" is still a banger, live.

Nothing wrong with his voice at all and he obviously helps to write the songs. But he's a musician, she's a star.
