Is he actually any good? Like, will we be talking about his music in 5-10 years from now? What little I've been exposed to has made me confused at his popularity.

his popularity seems to be continuing to go strong so i think that his music will last however he is not good
I see Eminem is still doing that whole backtrack thing where he just randomly raps a few words on top of his own voice being played through the speakers. Dude is a horrendous live performer. And like others, I like a lot of his older music too.

If only being any good were a prerequisite for being crazy popular (see:...oh, way too many examples from every generation to count).
so are tickets selling that badly they decide to add Shawn Mendes to Friday to help move tickets? like what's the point of adding him, exactly?
I mean, I know he has a huge following....of high school (and younger) girls
Oh yeah, from a marketing standpoint and all that it's a fantastic move, but stage wise and set time wise I'm just wondering how's it gonna affect the rest of the day? Is him being labeled as a 'special performance' going to be a 20 min set or an hour long one? so many questions lol
Add means nothing for me, hopefully it helps with the schedule a bit since I'll be whatever is opposing him. Hoping the schedule doesn't butcher what was already a limited lineup for me.

Probably exactly why. Jack White/Yeah Yeah Yeah's don't exactly reach Gov Ball's main 16-24 demo.
Since Post Malone is playing during YYY's they needed a younger demo headliner, enter Shawn Mendes. Guess this makes Jack White less crowded so that's good.

Calling it: Post Malone gets moved to close against Jack White, and Shawn Mendes plays opposite YYY's.

I hope he's not the "Special Guest" Gov Ball typically books for that small time frame every year

ZOMG SHAWN MENDES (Who? God, I'm old).
Anyway, the other interesting tidbit is the new stage layout. Bacardi's now an open-air stage, and the tent's back where the Big Apple stage was last year. I wonder what that's going to do to traffic flow trying to get past Bacardi.
Also, it doesn't look like they added any further 21+ areas as was being discussed last year in response to all us olds complaining about those pesky kids.

Really surprised at the overwhelmingly positive response to this on social media. I expected people to HATE this.
I think that Friday is already so good for people who are not Shawn Mendes fans (aka olds) with Jack White, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, James Blake that they could care less that Gov Ball threw a bone to the kids.
