To those wondering why the friday of this fest is selling so badly, I think its safe to say its pretty much all on Jack. Tix to his shows in DC in a 6k venue are down to 22 bucks on stubhub, and the other markets are the same pretty much, with 15 dollar tix in Pittsburgh, and 19 bucks in Toronto
I thought it was really great. The addition of a live drummer adds a little bit of oomph to an already energetic show. They were in good spirits and Lauren was more active on stage than I've ever seen her. It was a tiny room for them, but the crowd was super into it, at least where I was standing. And they didn't oversell the place, which made for a better experience than the last time I saw them, packed in like a sardine at Terminal 5.
They played five new songs in 17: "Get Out," "Graffiti," "God's Plan," "Miracle," "Forever," and "Never Say Die" (This being Brooklyn, I was kind of hoping for "My Enemy" and a Matt Berninger cameo, but alas). I dug the new stuff more live than I have recorded, and it didn't seem jarringly different or out step with the better-known material, at least by my lights. Imagine Dragons-y or not, "Miracle" kind of rocked - I wouldn't call it their best song, but there was none of that, "We'll just wait this out until they get back to the stuff we know" energy that can sometimes happen when it's time for music from the new album.
I dunno. I'm something of a CHVRCHES stan, but I had a great time and I think it's going to be a kick-ass set at the festival.
I enjoyed the show a lot. Band was on point and new songs sounded excellent. I still don't know why they let the guy on the right sing 2 songs in the set as those tracks are usually just....not that good. Ditto for hoping for "My Enemy" as well. Was my first time at Elsewhere and I really liked the place though it's the middle of fucking NOWHERE. I also didn't realize that they were ensuring the name on the tickets scanned matched one of the ID's given at the venue which screwed a few people over. I got mine legit so weren't any issues.
On another note, someone ripped a terrible smelling ROTTEN EGG FART during the 2nd song which lingered for a bit.
I actually kind of dig seeing "Under the Tide," although less for Martin Doherty's performance (there's certainly a charisma gap between him and Lauren as frontpeople) and more just because I think the song, overall, is a bit of a banger in a live setting.

Do you think it would sell better if Post Malone was headlining?

So my personal big fear is that these big name rock acts like Jack White, Nine Inch Nails, whoever dont want to sub headline or drop to the point where they are properly booked in terms of attendance. Cause if the headliner was Post this year its kinda whatever. Theyd probably have Jack oppose him, then have James Blake in the spot between headliners, and the yeah yeah yeahs in the same spot.

yeah i do
Without a doubt. The festival market in 2018 isn't for acts like Jack White at a large multi-genre fest. He arguably only has 1 true crossover hit and his latest record failed to produce even a rock/alt radio hit.
He'll continue headlining rock-based or smaller regional fests but unless The White Stripes return I dont see him headlining another major anytime soon.

Yeah I said it in the Made in America thread last week, but booking Jack White as your headliner in 2018 is a terrible business move. He does not have the pull anymore, especially at multi genre fests. I think the only fests he should headline now are the Shaky Knees & Riot Fest caliber ones.

Interesting as I creep towards my late 30's (yikes) the music I like is basically being pushed out of mainstream festivals. I guess we all grow old and lose touch.

I hear that....I definitely would not travel for any festival this summer but with this one in my backyard and the generally soft second hand market I always find it is worth it

The question is, who, if any, are the big rock acts that can still headline a festival GovBall's size? Radiohead, Pearl Jam, somebody like U2 (their set at Bonnaroo was supposed to be great, but I don't imagine they're going to be pulling a lot of festival dates moving forward), the Killers...who else? All of those other than the Killers are going to be a tough get, since someone like Radiohead can sell out MSG four times in under an hour.
Metallica, Muse, Tool, Arctic Monkeys, Tame Impala (maybe?)
It's tough to say that Tool could, given the turnout Sunday of last year (don't get me wrong, they blew my mind out my butt...but it was the least-attended day of the festival).
Tame Impala...maaaaayyyybe. They did great as a headliner at Panorama, but they didn't sell out the day, either.
I should've mentioned Foo Fighters. I'm guessing they'd do fine.

I think even Foo Fighters will see their cultural relevance start to dry up in the next 2-3 years. They seem to only play to the converted and last two albums have tanked in terms of sales/streams/cultural penetration.

I look at the Pilgrimage lineup for this year (which I really like), and see what JW's festival carreer looks like indefinitely.

Foo Fighters will always be huge. They've reached that point where they can just putt out shit albums and they'll still sell out football stadiums around the world. Pearl Jam hasn't had a hit album or song in like 18 years and they still are a massive draw.

Agreed, and Foo Fighters has been pandering to the classic rock crowd with all the covers they've started incorporating in their sets.
Arcade Fire is probably approaching Jack White territory but I think they would still be at least a #3 at a fest like GBall.
disagree. take a look how they are selling for their philly show. 6.5k venue and tickets are selling for 24 bucks on stubhub. In comparison, Post Malone tix are selling for $213 at the same venue
I think Dead and Company could headline fests. I think that John Mayer on his own also could, though he is less rock on his albums. I know the Roo thing makes people think that D&C wouldnt be able to do it for mainstream fests but I think for cities that would legit get some older folk out to the fest

Yeah but it's not like that at every venue. Plus AF has been EVERYWHERE the last year and a half so the demand is probably dead at this point. If they took a couple years off and came back, they'd still be a headliner imo.
Unless the rock headliner booking is truly unique or rare (maybe not even the case, see Tool) then it’s just not going to sell as much as the rap headliner in 2018, and the forseeable future.
Another mistake that bookers like Founders make (IMO, before I am attacked) is honoring legacy bands that were never too huge to begin with. For example, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Yes, they were big in the alt-rock world in the early 2000’s but outside of that I would assume that the average attendee of Govball’s newer demographic knows litte more than “Maps”, sadly. It is great that GovBall does get unique bookings like The Strokes back in 2014, but from a business and marketing perspective there’s no reason why Yeah Yeah Yeahs should be billed higher than Post Malone in 2018. It boggles my mind that they are even on the main stage given the caliber of Post’s popularity at the moment. Friday would probably have sold out first if he was billed in the top line. He’s practically buried on the bill considering how powerful his name is in 2018.
Again, this is my opinion from a marketing perspective. As much as it annoys me that someone like Travis Scott has made it into the top line this year, the sad fact (for some) is that this is what sells nowadays.
Bottom-line is unless the top billings other than those massively popular for the demo during the booking year, the headliners have to be legacy acts that are classic in the sense that their music is still relevant to the general public. This is why we have Wiz Khalifa on a side-stage overshadowing Tool, who was the #1 booking of 2017.
