Huh. Despite saying "I'm doing this every year" when I first attended in 2015, I'm gonna pass on this year.
A lot of this lineup feels pretty stale both in terms of repeats from recent years but also in ignoring a lot of forward-thinking musicians who are riding creative highs right now. EX: Jazz heavy lineup and yet somehow no Joshua Abrams. Ugh.
Plus, it's one thing when you've got a surprise show with acts collaborating, but it's hard to get excited when half the lineup is things like: Steve Gunn, The Black Twig Pickers, Steve Gunn & The Black Twig Pickers or Abigail Washburn & Wu Fei, Bela Fleck & Abigail Washburn, Bela Fleck & Brooklyn Rider, Brooklyn Rider.

Bonnie has a new album coming out that's all Susanna covers. I'd bet on him doing something with her or being a 'surprise guest' with her & Mize et. al. rather than a solo set.

I'm just going to be lazy and copy/paste what I wrote on FB:
It’s Chanukah in November!
The Great: * Godspeed You! Black Emperor, ‘The Ecstatic Music of Alice Coltrane’, Diamanda Galás, Juana Molina, Suuns, Evan Parker Electro-Acoustic Ensemble, Roscoe Mitchell Trios, Jason Moran Duo w/ Milfred Graves, Jaga Jazzist Featuring Ståle Storløkken & Jon Balke, Kid Koala’s ‘’Satellite’ Turntable Orchestra, Bang on a Can All-Stars, Gas, Arto Lindsay, Craig Taborn Quartet, and Four Tet. * It feels very heavy on free-jazz/improv, which I’m definitely down with!
The Not-So-Great: * I am not a fan of the sheer quantity of teases/hints… they pretty much revealed the majority of the IMHO “great” acts already, which really took away from the *POW* of the line-up reveal today. * Although they have one of my favorite bands this year (GY!BE), I have to admit that I’m not going completely nuts over the line-up. But again, maybe it was just the constant teases/hint that tempered my excitement. Also, there are a bunch of acts that I’m unfamiliar with, so I need to do some “research” on their music. Historically, my favorite Big Ear performances were by artists I was completely unfamiliar with. * Like the last event, they’re restricting the VIP “best seats / guaranteed entrance” as a benefit until 5 minutes before each show (to be fair - I think that’s actually better than last year). At a $600 price tag ($400 over the regular pass), that time limit, given the distribution of venues and overlapping events, might be a deal breaker this year.

Yeah, I don't want to be too negative, but I'm going to be negative: a lot of the repeats are people I wasn't interested in seeing the first time. But there is clearly an audience for these artists...
There are so many names that I haven't listened to before, and once again this festival surprised me with the lineup. Maybe it's finally time for me to focus on free jazz/improv.

I’d start with The Thing. If you like Colin Stetson then you’d like Mats Gustafsson, I think. Past that, Roscoe Mitchell and Milford Graves are both insanely great. Graves is actually one of my favorite drummers ever.

For now, the only one I will skip is Nels Cline. His "Rova: Ascension" show was the reason I stopped caring for free music (and I was terrified when I saw it on the lineup earlier today).
I was checking the Polish experimental duo BNNT's album yesterday, and apparently Mats Gustafsson has a guest appearance in that album, which I liked a lot. So probably I'll like his own stuff too.

well, just skip the rova ascension set! I hate to hear you are totally turned off nels cline, he's such a versatile dude. lovers is not really a free jazz thing...it's more like some jazz originals with some American standards thrown in for good measure. Very throwback, straightforward sound. He also does some really cool jazz stuff that isn't just total improv freak outs. check out the nels cline singers macroscope. one of my favorite albums from a few years ago. Also, Woodstock Sessions Vol. 2 is an all improv set with Nels Cline and MMW, but isn't like a free jazz thing. They hit all sorts of sounds. A collab set for the four of them would be the highlight of my Big Ears.
also really interested in kelly lee owens!!, tyshawn sorey trio, steve gunn (always), laurel halo, neif-norf, jaga jazzist, four tet, lightning bolt, and GYBE from a first glance. and I'm always a sucker for some bluegrass and banjo.
