How do y'all feel this year compared to past years? Both overall and also in the specifics: attendance, running of the fest, amenities, etc.
I'm always bad at estimating audiences, but there were more "one in, one out" moments than I remember from last year, and more venues, so I'm guessing attendance was good. Since they're now a 501(c)(3), I wonder if some of the ticket sales / attendance information will be made public.
Totally subjective call, of course, but on paper this was my least favorite line-up of my 4 year attendance. It was still, of course, fantastic; I heard a ton of great music, but I don't think I would have made the trek if I hadn't already fallen in love with the festival and learned to trust the curators. The film portion of the event really upped their game, and had some screenings that were on par with some of the best music I heard. Other events, such as the Kid Koala audience participation were really unique and fun.
I ended up begrudgingly purchasing VIP tickets again, because everyone I went with did as well... happily, I found it to be more valuable than previous years - there were some really great events (wine tasting w/ John Medeski; private performance in the lobby of the Tennessee by Rhiannon Giddens, a really solid brunch, etc.) and it's nice to receive a schedule of all of the secret shows in advance (I'm a planner!). My biggest complaint here (and if you don't do VIP, you're not going to be sympathetic), is that with the overlapping schedules and the distance between certain venues (it's a 12 - 15 min walk from the Mill & Mine to the Bijou... and even longer to the Church Street United Methodist Church, etc.), it's really difficult to get to every show before it starts. Paying a significant amount over the regular ticket price for VIP seats (I believe my ticket was around $400 more than Price Level 1 GA), but only having access to them if you arrive at least 5 mins before the show starts really devalues that benefit.
But all in all, I had a great time, and will almost certainly return for a 5th year.
I’m dying right now, actually. He was always my biggest want every Big Ears announcement. RIP Glenn. Your music touched many hearts and souls. It also opened many ears.
