I only went on Sunday so I tried to get my money's worth. Saw 9 shows ... Mt. Joy < The Wild Reeds < Alice Merton < Alvvays < Parcels < Lord Huron < Nathaniel Rateliff < Tenacious D < The National
1. Tenacious D 2. Nathaniel Rateliff 3. Lord Huron 4. The National 5. Parcels
It was a great day, I liked every show I saw. I saw Mt. Joy open for an opener a few years ago and they've improved since then. The Wild Reeds rocked harder than I expected but also could slow it down with some good folk music, they were hard to put in a box. I liked how humble Alice Merton is. No Roots blew up but I think some of her other stuff resonated better with the crowd and it's cool she met her band in university and they've been together for five years. Reggie the guitar player is a beast both on the guitar and that he could beat us all up at the same time. I would marry Molly Rankin from Alvvays if I wasn't already engaged ... but my name isn't Archie so I think she'd say no. I agree with what others were saying about Parcels, I had a ton of fun and there's no way you can't dance listening to them, but they'd be so much better served late night at a festival. Lord Huron's style of music is right up my alley so I may have enjoyed them more than most. I had a ton of fun at Nathaniel Rateliff's set. I liked all the instrumentation and how he interacted with the crowd. Tenacious D took the cake for me with the combination of nostalgia, how hard they rocked and being star struck (I got there 45 minutes early for a good spot). It was so fun knowing most of those songs and singing along with them. I can't get into The National in a way that would make me want to be in a pit or even close even for one of their shows. I feel like they are more of a sit down and enjoy type of a band which is fine because I was worn out so I sat in the back near the baseball field and enjoyed.
My favorite moment of the entire weekend may have been Andrew WK unironically counting down from 100 to start the last song. I honestly thought he was doing a bit but it fucking worked.
andrew wk pit, into rail for matt and kim.. destroyed me in the best way possible
Also shout out to the aquarium. Might've been too heavy with children for a morning before the fest, but all the animals were cool. Whale sharks and giant manta Ray's are huge, and the Sea Lions had top 5 energy of the weekend.
Vance Joy (2nd time seeing) was probably the most out of place and he did a fine job. Idk what his draw would be but the crowd was huge and he's one of the better acts of that genre of pop folk so it ended up working out. I didn't see a single disappointing set which even at roo, acl, day for night I've had.

Ok, now my turn I guess...
1. Parcels (if you were there, you know) 2. Greta Van Fleet (hoping I don't get banished by the board lol) 3. Matt And Kim 4. Tenacious D (was very happy with a nice balance between being funny and being serious) 5. Sir Sly 6. Japandroids 7. Queens Of The Stone Age (definitely the best headliner this weekend) 8. Jimmy Eat World (surprisingly better than the last time I saw them opening for Incubus last summer. redeemed themselves imo) 9. Manchester Orchestra (another act I was surprised with, thought it might be more mellow but they brought the energy) 10. The National (again, very surprised with this, cause I wasn't a huge fan of them before their show)
Overall, I'm very happy I made this trip, even with only a weeks notice. Thought almost everyone killed it (looking at you, Jack White) or surprised me with how good they'd be live. Makes it very easy for me to consider this again in the coming years
SK was great: Jack White, tenacious d, David Byrne, parcels, BRMC (not sure if I liked the fest or terminal west show more,) Lukas Nelson.
I loved every show I went to, aside from Alice Merton and Ezra.
Alice Merton came out of left field and is being played on every station. She has a a catchy song but I couldn't find anything on her prior to....how was she live?
Glad to hear some people from here were turned by the National. They're one of those bands that just click out of nowhere. They've been touring a ton the last year or so but I keep missing them and it's killing me.
First time to Shaky Knees - great festival! I will be back. Also been lurking on this board for quite a while but never joined...
I love these lists.
Top 10: 1) National - have seen them a few times, this was the best I've seen them 2) Tenacious D 3) QOTSA 4) Courtney Barnett 5) David Byrne - best thing I saw at Coachella, just as amazing here 6) Lukas Nelson and POTR - WAYYYYY exceeded expectations. Heartfelt. 7) Charly Bliss 8) TORRES - hoped she'd see more love on the board; intense 9) Andrew WK - just wow 10) Parquet Courts/Alvvays (tie)
Was underwhelmed by Jack White and Cake. Jack did not seem inspired, and I hoped for more rareties (and maybe those 20 more minutes)! As others have said, Cake used up so much time on their entrance music and talking between songs, I felt stressed for time myself. Still love both acts though.

My Top 5:
1) Andrew W.K. - His "Sound" is not my usual cup of tea but boy does he (and his band) on a fun set. The countdown was from 93 and not 100 IIRC. Almost felt like a revival under that tent. Even the rain was awesome.
2) BJM - Super Low Key to way to cap off an early evening. Bummed I didn't hear the Ballad of Jim Jones but still loved them.
3) Parcels - You could tell they were happy to be there. Great little danceable jams. Hope they get to blow up in the US.
4) The Black Angels - Went in not expecting much having seen them once before @ Orion fest a few years back. I dug on their grooves big time.
5) GVF - Sorry (Not Sorry) - I for one am glad to hear a band rip off LZ instead of Radiohead and/or Nirvana. Once the first full length comes out I think the LZ comparison will die down a bit.
* (6) Prong at the Masquerade on Thursday night. Hadn't seen them in at least 15 years and they Crushed it. Helmet, not so much. It was just Paige and what appeared to be guys on a $20 per deim.
Low point of the fest for me was Cake. Start late and run a 7 minute intro tape? Waste time between songs with pointless banter? No thanks. I get you like to troll YOUR audience but you're at a fest with a 60 minute set. Start on time, play your hits and say thanks. If you want to waste YOUR fans time and they're into it...great. Just don't waste my time at a festival. It's pointless. You being a troll on stage isn't going to make me like your music. In fact one of my friends that WAS a huge Cake fan left early because he was so pissed off.
Overall, this may have been my best festival experience as a whole. I really liked the location and set up this year. I went in 2016 and didn't dig the set up at all. One thing I must comment on is that my friends and I all agreed on the fact that we didn't even need to see the headlining acts to consider this an outstanding line up. I really liked several of the "lower tier" bands. Seemed liked the bookers really do have an idea of what the fans would like to hear and see.
On a side note, I ran into a small but annoying problem (I purchased Melvins tix before they announced it was a "Free" show for wristband holders and was told I couldn't get a refund from TM) and the folks at SK basically told me I was SOL.
I e-mailed C3 and the matter was resolved in 15 minutes. I have to commend them for their stand up customer service!
* Not an official Shaky Knees show but I had to mention it.

It was good. She can really sing. I thought the few songs we didn't to before the fest sound like a copy of Florence but she didn't sound much like that live.

With you on Cake. I stomped my tiny size ten foot and walked off. Fuck that shit.
Was I the only one who loved Ezra's set? Granted I was right up front and I love his music so it wasn't hard to get way into it for me. I guess I'd like some other opinions on it.

We watched from the hill, wasn't really into it. But it was more interesting than Vance Joy. That was the only I saw that I didn't enjoy at all.

I guess I'll take just about any level of abuse from performers, because Cake didn't bother me and Kanye never has. Shit, I even stayed through Fly Lo's entire ACL W2 meltdown a couple years ago.

I'd prefer they actually play songs. But especially in a limited set time. Eddie Vedder talks a lot but they also play a shit ton of songs. Melvins didn't say more than a couple of words, that was pretty great.
the front man for cake was hilarious. they also did play the hits. 2 out of 3, theyre not the fucking beatles.
They only played 10 songs. In the same time frame at roo they played 12. You wouldn't rather have more?
Eh, two songs played the same city to city or POWERFUL off the cuff banter, I'm taking banter. I love me some going the distance, but he was cracking me up, and we still got Long Jacket and Never There.

He still had time for the banter at roo. It was too much at SK.
