the front man for cake was hilarious. they also did play the hits. 2 out of 3, theyre not the fucking beatles.
What happened? I saw Cake like 10+ years ago and the lead singer went on and about nature and preserving the Earth. He's not wrong but it was terrible in taste. He eventually brough out a tree and asked us "Whoever can tell me what kind of tree this is gets to keep it."
Was I the only one who loved Ezra's set? Granted I was right up front and I love his music so it wasn't hard to get way into it for me. I guess I'd like some other opinions on it.
I also loved it. Never saw him before (always a conflict) but have long wanted to do so. He was top 3 on that day for me - just shows how strong this lineup was. I was up close too and was definitely drawn in. "No Place" was the highlight for me - loved the intensity.

Greta Van Fleet selling merch that is literally just their name in the Stranger Things font is the ultimate metaphor for how out of ideas we are as a culture. And it sold like gangbusters, as far as I can tell. No wonder all these great festivals are dying.

No Place was definitely my highlight too! I would love to catch him again at a normal venue. I think it would translate better in a smaller setting.

was that at the mahalia jackson?
that was my first (and only) time seeing cake and i was super excited. one of the most disappointing shows i've seen. the tree giveaway was literally a half hour. so obnoxious.
1. Byrne 2. Barnett 3. Japandroids LN 4. Black Angels 5. QOTSA (only had medium expectations and thought they were great)
The last five in no particular order: Bayonne, Circa Survive, Tenacious D, Lord Huron, Brian Jonestown LN
As for Cake, I don't mind a little banter - even at the expense of a song or two - if it's worthwhile. He seemed like he was hinting at something but was afraid to really say it. Again, if you have an opinion, then state it. Otherwise, just play the music.

Agreed. CAKE is one of my favorite bands but I was not a big fan of the performance. I've seen them twice before and the banter was there, but this time it was too much and not memorable. Just seemed like a big waste of time. Can't remember anything he ranted about but can still remember pretty much every word of Kanye's rants in 2014.

The whut?? It was interestingly in some high school in NJ. I was living in Philly at the time. Brazilians Girls and 2 other bands opened. BG was great, Cake was decent but that was also like my 3rd concert in my life.
Edit: It was at Washington Townships Investor's Bank Performing Arts Center (what an ironic name) fka at the time Commerce Bank Performing Arts Center in Sewell, NJ.

I enjoyed his set, I thought his voice sounded a lot like his recordings, just wasn’t in my top 10. Still enjoyed his set for sure.

I still don’t know if it’s true but my friend made a joke about some kid that walked by and said haha look isn’t that the kid from stranger things and then later I heard two times from diffferent people that it actually was the kid from stranger things, that he was at the fest.

Hmm yeah I did not hear about that. Which kid? Finn Wolfhard?
There was a magazine in our airbnb about how Atlanta was the new Hollywood, and it had a picture of 11 on it. Idk if she's from Atlanta or if they shot Stranger Things there or what. Latter makes sense, especially if cast members were hanging out at Shaky.

honestly not too sure which kid. I didn’t get a good look but my friend did. I assume it’s either Finn Wolfhard or Noah Schnapp

Long-time lurker, first-time poster here. This was our first Shaky Knees (or visit to Atlanta, for that matter). Thanks to all of you who proved so much great information on this thread about Shaky Knees and Atlanta in general- we had an incredible time. For folks still thinking about going for the first time, I’ll offer my newbie observations:
- Atlanta is easy to get to. From one of the busiest airports, it’s an 18 minute MARTA train ride to the downtown high-rise hotel district. It's a half-mile to one mile walk to the festival from there. You never need a car, cab or Uber. - Atlanta is affordable. Great hotels cost less than half of those in New York, Boston or California. Our huge hotel had a bar with 36 beers on tap, and there's nothing like a pint of local craft IPA after the fest. We ran into folks we met during the day and shared stories over drinks. - People were friendly. We met folks from Oregon, Nova Scotia, New Jersey and New Zealand! Also plenty of helpful locals. - No Totems. No Flags. No body surfers. I don't want to be a killjoy, but when someone raises a giant head totem right in the view you camped out for, it's a bit of a drag. - Rock is not dead, despite what some other fests are pedaling. You almost couldn't make a bad choice, from noon to close.
Musically, I agree with most of what folks have said already. A few personal highlights:
- The National. Matt Berninger came up the center runway and sang "The Day I Die" 5 feet from us! I only caught onto this band with "Sleep Well Beast" album but I was blown away with their set. - David Byrne. Percussion, vocals, choreography elevated his solo and Talking Heads songs to new levels. Couldn't stop smiling. - Fleet Foxes. Been dying to see them. Regret not getting late-night show tickets before they sold out. - Lord Huron, Jimmy Eat World, Nathaniel Raitliff, Alice Merton. All did brisk sets with hits, new songs, and just enough crowd interaction. - Cake. I liked the performance. Do you think SK will book them next year to do the other half of their set?
This was one of the best festivals we've been to. I miss it already.
A thought I had at the fest is that Nate Ratliff is just as much of a cultural appropriation as Post Malone and he doesn't get any shit for it.
He’s also way less popular tho, and less popular than contemporary black artists making similar music (Brittany Howard, Leon Bridges). Not that I want to defend the dude, but it’s different.
Nah I'm pretty sure he wasn't involved with the new album, all the promo pic I saw of them were without him (I did not see if he was also checking out BRMC)
Top 3 Crowds ( Based on what I witnessed) 1) Matt and Kim ( not my favorite when it comes to music but crowd was INSANE, loudest, craziest, everybody dancing during the whole set, Kim flashing her boobs to the crowds made everyone go even crazier, great crowd.
2) The Voidz, despite everyone being at Tenacious D, this only meant that only true fans ( including myself) stayed at the Voidz set. Crowd wasnt the largest but everybody seemed to enjoy the show, making the band do an encore after chanting one more song for a whole minute.
3) Fleet Foxes, Beautiful set, Beautiful atmosphere, large crowd.

Matt and Kim was ridiculously fun. I was smiling and dancing the whole time. They put so much effort into their live show, and it shows. Crowd was super fun too. So much crowd surfing.
I guess I just don't get Alice Merton or Ezra. The only part of Alice that I liked was her awesome pants. I can't even say that much for Ezra though. Literally every other show was phenomenal, though. I must admit I was bummed to not get The Distance from Cake and the banter was meh
Awesome festival. Will definitely come back lineup pending. Was lucky enough to see QOTSA at an opera theater in St Pete last Wednesday, then got close to the rail for them Saturday night.
MARTA is modern, clean, frequent and convenient. 18 minutes from Airport to Peachtree Center, a few blocks from our hotel (which was 0.6 miles to the fest). $12 for a round trip ticket.
It's like the DC Metro Train or Chicago's El, but a lot less crowded.
Agreed on Central Park- It was big enough, but compact enough to get from stage to stage in minutes. Plenty of shady spots to chill in, too. Oodles of hotel rooms within walking distance eliminate the need to drive and pay for parking, or get a cab/Uber.
