Longtime lurker to BC thread but here’s my two cents for this year: FLEETWOOD MAC - KENDRICK LAMAR - JACK WHITE ARCTIC MONKEYS - HALSEY - QOTSA
I doubt that Boston Calling will ever book another headliner or sub again which actively recorded and toured before 1990.
They're so afraid that the presence of old folks at the festival will harsh the mellow of some molly-poppin', acid-droppin' candy raver who was having a really good time but is now freaking out because that guy standing 15 feet away looks just like grandpa -- if grandpa had long, scaly tentacles protruding from his back -- that they're doing everything possible to avoid booking acts which may appeal to older audiences, even if the act is "under 40." I hope that I'm wrong, but I don't think we'll see the likes of Jason Isbell or Sturgill Simpson at BC again.

minus halsey this would be amazing. sadly i bet neither fleetwood mac or kendrick will be there though if the eminem rumor ends up being true.
I could see them booking both Eminem and Kendrick as headliners in the same year, since their voices, flows, beats, and eras differ enough from each other that it wouldn't feel like two of three headliners were doing the exact same thing.

You think?
Actually, was it you that suggested Depeche Mode for this fest? They'd be an awesome and appropriate booking, but sadly unlikely.

I seconded someone else's suggestion (Katy Mae?), but I wonder if they'd book them. It seems like all of the 2014 and 2015 editions had a heaping helping of acts -- of whatever vintage -- which attract Boomers and Gen X'ers, but they've been trending with younger-appeal acts since then.
We'll see, I certainly hope that I'm wrong about this. I'm hoping for a lot of Dad Rock...or as I call it, "Can't Call It Dad Rock Because I Don't Have A Wife Or Kids Which Is Precisely Why I Need This Music" Rock.

Depeche Mode is expensive AF and would only be a option if they actually toured multiple dates in the US around that time. Which does not appear likely.
Acts along the lines of The Replacements and Pixies could certainly be booked as non-headlining stage closers. Though frankly, you'd be better off seeing an act like that in the Wang Theatre or Orpheum.

Oh, in the event that the Crashline Productions people are reading along, regarding booking a future act that was actively recording and touring before 1990.

The Pixies are opening for Weezer in Mansfield in July, so they're prob out for BC

NICK CAVE AND THE BAD SEEDS
They are doing a European festival a week later, so if they're up for a little pond hopping, that would be wonderful.
Then these picks for the undercard: -The National -Halsey -Portugal. the Man and/or MGMT -Tyler the Creator -Grizzly Bear -PVRIS -The Lemonheads -Maggie Rogers -Vulfpeck

The Lemonheads don't appear to be an ongoing concern, although that could change. There haven't been any news updates on their website since last May. I suspect that Dinosaur Jr would be a more likely pick for the Massachusetts 90's guitar band spot. We'd be more likely to get Evan Dando, billed as "Evan Dando," than The Lemonheads.
I can't see Arcade Fire headlining so soon after drawing so poorly at TD Garden, plus their music has evolved away from rock so much over the years that you'd think they'd want one "guitar rock" headliner in the mix.
Call it wishful thinking, but when you consider...
*Wilco's statement that they'll only be doing a few dates in 2018, which means that they ARE performing a few dates *They and all of their side projects played Eaux Claires last year in what became a very Solid Sound-like lineup, suggesting a close working relationship with Crash Line *Wilco generally doesn't play Boston in Solid Sound fest years, which likely means no Boston show for Wilco in 2019, after not having played Boston since January 2016
...I won't be surprised if they're in the lineup (and even less surprised if Jeff Tweedy, with his side band Tweedy or performing solo, is in the lineup.)
Boston Calling tweeted today that they'll have big news for us on January 4, so we're likely getting the lineup drop this week. All will be revealed.

Given what we know my final estimate for headliners and subheadliners is: Eminem | Arctic Monkeys | Frank Ocean The National | QOTSA | Portugal. The Man MGMT | Tyler The Creator | Khalid

So, Boston Calling tweeted a video a few hours ago, with a "Wasn't 2017 great, looking forward to 2018" theme.
The music accompanying the video was some pop/electronics thing, with prominent keyboards and guitar solo. I'm guessing that whomever it is is likely to be in the lineup, so it's worth checking out if you're curious.
Twitter links don't post properly here, but it should be easy enough to find.

Shazam says it is "Give It a Rest" by Wally Gagel and Xander Barry.

Pretty sure they're featured on a song by Guitar Rock, so it appears my last prediction has some merit

It's "Give it a rest" by Wally Gagel & Xandy Berry, from an album called Motivational 11. I think it's just filler music.

You're probably right, this Wiki entry doesn't exactly scream "live performer"

Belly are on the Coachella lineup. I'm guessing that spot will go to them, though I'd prefer Dinosaur Jr. or The Lemonheads

I'd expect them to have a few Massachusetts bands, like last year. If they did Converge, Piebald, and Buffalo Tom in one day last year, Belly plus one of the others isn't out of the question.
