More money. They’ve already tested the waters a bit, had a show at Lincoln and anthem in 2018, a show at anthem in 2019(meek mill). I don’t think we’ve ever seen a year where a tour has hit Merriweather and jiffy lube on the same leg and that’s the case with the bootie and the blowfish tour. I think we may see more of that in the future.
But are Hootie and the Blowfish promoted exclusively by Live Nation throughout 2019? It's certainly possible that LN will put on shows at MPP, but given their vertical integration model of owning the venues, they'll at least want Jiffy Lube to get in the black.
Sidenote, since I believe you work at The Anthem: any idea why MPP made the switch to Ticketmaster from Ticketfly? Does this mean that 9:30 and The Anthem will do the same?
God, please don’t let Ticketmaster be the ticketing service for 9:30 and The Anthem.
On a side note: Anyone going to the James Blake show next month? I can’t wait for the album tonight. I like the two songs he has released so far.

Got a ticket for James Blake given how good Assume Form is. Has anybody sat in the Tier B section on the second floor before (straight across the stage)? I never have, but I'm curious to try this section out given that it's usually part of the overpriced Super Excellent Seating area. Hope it's better than the boxes, since I found the vibe to be lacking from there in the past (way too cold!).

I usually stand on that tier right behind those seats when I attend show and the view is great. I can only imagine what it looks like a little lower down.
Possibly, but 9:30 Club does have shows the day before and day after
Also the presale PW is PIGEON and it's live now
The 2nd show is on Thursday, April 18th. So, we got the Tuesday show conflicting with Spiritualized and the Thursday one on the same night as Mitski in Richmond. Ugh.

I stand corrected: Chris Stapleton at MPP on Sunday August 11, promoted by Live Nation.

Given how hated Jiffy Lube is, I wonder whether Live Nation is trying to divest that asset in the future if MPP turns out to be a good alternative amphitheater for them.

It felt like once Anthem opened IMP had less interest in shows at Merriweather (that may not actually be true if I went and counted shows). Perhaps offering the venue to LiveNation is a way to fill the calendar. Seems like it’s a more desirable location and the renovations likely upped its profitability.
Artist desire to play Anthem last year was so high that Merriweather definitely suffered. I’d expect a lot more Live nation bookings due simply to having superior venues. MGM, Jiffy Lube, and they even tried to grab the new SW location but they are all sub par. And now that Merriweather is all upgraded too, the desire to play this area will be even greater. They make more money and we get more publicity among other things. It’s a win win, Surprised they waited this long.

There is a downside, not necessarily for me so much but who the hell is gonna play the back end of the Jiffy schedule. You gotta think they still want to get 30 events there a year

True, because with Live Nation owning Jiffy Lube outright, they also get to pocket the fees on parking and concessions.

they also sell season passes for suites and other stuff like that. If they end up stealing stuff that should be at The Anthem (i.e. Arcade Fire last year) that will be unfortunate
Another Live Nation event announced for MPP: Third Eye Blind and Jimmy Eat World
I think this is more about venue size than MPP over Jiffy fwiw
Jiffy Lube fits what, 25,000, versus MPP's 19,000? Since the lawn at Jiffy Lube is massive, the difference in venue size seems somewhat inconsequential between the two for when it comes to needed something smaller in capacity.

id say 25k vs 19k isnt inconsequential, especially when that tour is doing venues that are 8k or less

Vampire Weekend skips our area which is fairly shocking. Maybe this means the Virgin Festival is coming to the DC area for sure? Maybe Live Nation is blowing up All Things Go? Struggling to understand what the deal is with that
Looking at this closer they play Norfolk on the friday before labor day weekend and then dont have a show until the Tuesday after labor day in Boston. Looks like we have a Labor Day weekend music event in DC to be announced.
