Saw about 10 minutes of Royal Blood, and def liked what I heard. QoTSA really brought it. First time seeing them since they toured with NIN on the With Teeth tour. Queens has so many great songs to pull from at this point, top notch show

Friday March 16, Philip Glass Ensemble doing the soundtrack of Koyaanisqatsi at the Kennedy Center. A fuckload of (fairly inexpensive) tickets are still available.

My life is quantifiably better knowing that this concert exists.
Anthem with Byrne, Fleet Foxes and Jack White in May. All three would have been MPP shows last year. I’m conflicted about this.
I doubt these would have all been MPP shows this year. I think Byrne woulda been at Wolf Trap, Jack White who the fuck knows because his listed tour is so bizarre, and Fleet Foxes woulda been at DAR or Warner Theatre, the other venues on their tour are small

I've yet to visit MPP. Would that really have been a better venue than The Anthem for these acts?
Other than the fact it’s a pain in the ass to get to from downtown, I prefer it to Anthem. Should be especially nice once they’re done with the renovations. I think you all supremely overrate Anthem.

Seated shows vs GA is a by your mileage thing IMO. I like GA much much more, however im also 6'1" and can see over most everyone regardless of how far back I am. Getting to Merriweather is also so tough

I think sightlines from the floor of Anthem are butt, and I’m also 6’1”.

Also, considering Fleet Foxes played MPP last year, I’m not sure why my statement was controversial. Ya, they likely wouldn’t have played there again, but that wasn’t really the point I was trying to make.

Interesting. Have you been on either of the 2nd level balconies, I went with a shorter friend for Phoenix and we went up there and it was pretty great still
IF MPP is able to steal shows from Jiffy Lube, and shows that would be at MPP go to The Anthem, this could be an absolutely massive win. Jiffy Lube is the worst venue in the area IMO. We shall see tho

Jack White definitely would have been MPP. I saw him there last tour cycle and it was pretty packed on the lawn.
As a fellow DC resident, this is all great news for me. I rarely ever ventured to MPP during the week because of all the travel time. I understand why MD/VAers aren't exactly loving this, but at least the Anthem is Metro accessible.
Also, I have had zero issues with the sight lines at the Anthem. The stage is elevated enough that it shouldn't matter unless you're in the land of giants.

The Anthem's stage is not fixed and can be taken out depending on each act, so the sightlines should vary for each show depending on how high they want the stage to be.

Haven’t really noticed that to be the case in practice.
I mean, it’s fine. It’s better than DAR. They book good bands. But I’m not on board with all this “best venue ever” stuff.

I wouldn't say that either, partially because the floor is painful AF to stand on for hours on end. That said, I wish more large-scale venues in the USA had this type of setup.

It's so brutal, sitting in a box for Bon Iver made the experience a lot more enjoyable. Also, there's happy hour at the top floor bars until showtime.

It’ll be interesting to see if the collapse played a role in Jack White playing at The Anthem. Maybe it didn’t and he was originally gonna play there all along, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it played a factor. I’m just hoping for Arctic Monkeys, Beck, and Mumford & Sons this year.

It looks like I’ll definitely be going to Nathaniel Rateliff at The Anthem. I’m leaning towards going to David Byrne as well. Maybe The Decemberists too. I’m just hoping for a Father John Misty show now. Make it happen, I.M.P!
