Everything has been quiet lately. Message board, announcements, podcast. Wanting that extra push to get the anticipation going for the festival.
I have put together a playlist that, for myself, is an improvement over the general playlist with 3 songs from each artist. It has more of those that I am super excited about and less (or none) of those that I am not so excited about (see Tuck and Patti and Cheech and Chong.) Was getting tired of forwarding past those songs I didn't want to hear. If anyone is interested, enjoy:
Current sets I am most excited about... so hard to pick a top 5 because there are at least 15 that I really am excited for. A Change is Gonna Come Hamitlon Leithauser & Rostam Glorietta Langhorne Slim Margo Price Sturgill Simpson Valerie June

Two quick notes -- Got an email from Mumford and Sons today teasing new music "make sure you're signed up for updates, etc" with a subject line of NEW MUSIC!
Neil Young.... am I the only one hoping that we don't hear about a Saturday headliner until July 12-13, per the radius clause (post Boston/Wang Theatre?)

If they wait until July, it won't be announced at all. That would be one of the few artists that could live up to the "unannounced" hype.

All in for the second part. If the first part comes to fruition, at least I'll get out of there early for Deer Tick on Saturday...
This would be out of left field, but what if Newport is waiting for Spiritualized to announce their new album before announcing them as Saturday's headliner.

99.9999% certain that's not happening.
I'd recommend we all stop waiting around for some extra announcement.
EDIT: And if there is going to be a late announcement, I'd imagine it'd be an artist that a solid chunk of attendees are familiar with. Spiritualized are NOT that.
While considering a one-day trip to Newport Jazz, I noted they dropped the More Artists Soon announcements from two of the three days.
That tells me we are waiting for more acts all three days at NFF or the scoreboard operator fell asleep during an intentional walk. I don't believe they keep that note up for museum acts, so whatever the reason, I think there is more than a Saturday headliner to be announced. One would think that if the rest are "special guests," we would see that on the list.
The main reason I'm not crazy about the delay is that it mucks up other plans. I've been drawn to seeing Austin in the fall -- expensive. And if Woodstock 2019 turns out to a be something special (say,a CSNY Reunion), the cost could be prohibitive, and another late lineup at Newport would make ny decision easy. It's all taste, of course, but I fear the many newer, bigger acts no longer "get it" because there are many places now building a reputation as a cool place, an iconic place to play. The new Asbury Park Fest in Sept. has a certain draw.
For some, 'getting it," is "getting' that for many performers Newport is a lower paying gig and just another stop along the heritage /iconic / its all about music tour. When record and CD sales meant more money, it was easier to drop one's booking fee. Maybe that's why hooking some seemingly obvious acts is getting more difficult. Although, interesting how these who do decide to come -- Jack White, Beck, Roger Waters -- then want to return and bring their friends. The artists have to spread the word, too.
Hello everyone! I'm a new member on this forum and I really enjoyed reading through this thread and seeing who everyone is excited about.
I will be going to NFF for the first time this year. I live in rural Mexico, so I rarely get to see live music and I'm looking forward to the festival. I was hoping some of you experienced folk could help me out with what to expect.
We will be staying in Massachussetts, because that's where I could find reasonable lodging. I guess it will be about an hour's drive (we will have a car). Does anyone have experience with parking in Newport, renting a bike and getting to the festival that way? Should I be looking to reserve a bike rental beforehand? Is that even possible? Alternatively, how long would it take to get out of the Fort if we park there and wait until all the music is over to leave? Does anyone know what in-town parking vs. parking at the Fort costs?
Do you know if there are lockers at the Fort or do you have to carry around whatever you bring all day? I couldn't find anything on the info page about this. If anyone wants to share what you normally pack for a day at the festival, that would be greatly appreciated!
Sorry to bombard with so many questions in my first post, but I'm super excited and want to make the most of our trip!
Just for fun these are some the acts I am currently most excited about, though I have plenty more listening to do before July:
Fantastic Negrito St. Vincent The War and Treaty Courtney Barnett Ben & Charlie Glen Hansard Colter Wall A Change is Gonna Come

Thanks so much for your patience with a newbie!
Glad to have you. Welcome to the boards.
Others will have to answer about the bike stuff. They definitely make it easy to do and there are always a ton of bike-riders who come to the festival but I don't know specifics about that.
Parking is pretty good but if you wait until after the music ends it can sometimes be a bit of a traffic jam trying to get out. There are only so many exits and a lot of people trying to use them.
I don't believe there are lockers. The area is small and you can set up a sort of "home base" somewhere in the field/back of one of the major stages that you can come and go to at your pleasure but it's not advisable to leave anything there all alone. There are still people who will take unattended items.
Make sure to bring sunscreen and some cash. They tend to have ATMs but not many and there are times where they go down/run out of money.
I'm sure many others will answer with other tips and info.

I've always taken the ferries over to the fort. Sometimes there is a wait on the way out, but no worse than the parking lot. There is a public parking lot right near where the ferries leave and come back at Perrotti Park. The ferries run $10 round trip and if memory serves parking is $20.

Another option is to park in Jamestown and take that ferry to and from the Fort. The ferry cost a little more, but the lineup at the end of the day is a fraction of the size of the Newport ferry lineup.

Depending on where in Mass. this person is staying, taking the Jamestown ferry might not be the greatest of ideas. If they're staying in Fall River, Dartmouth, New Bedford area - they'd have to double back across the bay, either over the Newport Bridge or at 195 in Providence. It might work if they're around Seekonk or the Attleboros.

We'll probably take the ferry at least one of the days. Thanks for the pricing info!

I am staying in Raynham. I am not at all familiar with this area, but a quick google search shows that the drive from there to Jamestown is only about 5 minutes longer than to Newport, so it seems like a viable option. Thanks!
