Ugh, this schedule is awful (in comparison to our own ClashFinders)
Tyler Childers overlaps with Margo Price - for those interested in the alt country, too bad.
Glorietta overlaps with Moses Sumney (and Glorietta with Lucius) - for those interested in the indie, too bad.
For me personally, I have a 2 and a half hour gap on Saturday with nothing I want to see...
Why does Jenny Lewis and Courtney Barnett and Courtney Barnett and Leithauser and Rostam overlap? The top two bands I want to see the most now largely overlap (Courtney and Rostam/Leif)... ugh.
Brandi and Langhorne - the two most foot stomping bands on sunday - overlap.
Tyler and Margo overlapping is pretty surprising. I think I'm gonna catch the full Moses set and catch the tail end of Glorietta.
The Sturgill/Wood Brothers/St. Vincent/Jason Isbell run will be action packed for me. Might be hard to tear myself away from some of those sets.
I think I'm gonna pass on Courtney and go straight from Jenny to Leithauser + Rostam.
I would have liked more time to check out Phoebe Bridgers, but I'm definitely setting up shop early to see Beneath the Sacred Mountain.
With Unannounced and A Change is Gonna Come confirmed to close out Saturday and Sunday, the hype is real. I'm pumped, it's gonna be a great weekend
But I don’t see, outside of other factors (such as an act can’t get to the grounds by a certain time), why Amanda Shires -> Tyler Childers isn’t switched with Fantastic Negrito -> JD McPherson. Both make better sense on the other stages. And then you wouldn’t have Tyler Childers overlapping with Margo Price.
Jenny Lewis overlapping with Courtney seems like a huge oversight as well. You could easily have used a single stage to showcase powerful female folk artists. Instead you take two artists with very similar crowds and split them up.
It also looks as if Newport is specifically using the 11 AM sets to try to draw people into the fest early. On Friday, Darlingside, an act with a song with 8 million plays, is on the smallest stage at 11 AM. When the act that follows them doesn’t even have 1 song with a million plays (I understand not wanting to hide Sidi Toure on the lineup; but even This is the Kit and (obviously) Rachael and Vilray have fewer plays and are much later in the day on the same stage).
Woke to the twitter alert, got very excited, read schedule and wow at first glance? conflicts galore for me and more than a few head scratching placements. but I have faith in the fest and need to take another look.
But right off the bat, Saturday having to choose from caamp and LCC, two of my new favorites, right off the bat? Tough stuff

You guys really overstate spotify plays...remember when people were saying Passenger could headline because he had a lot of spotify plays and youtube views?

I like Lake Street Dive, and will definitely be checking out the Rachael and Vilray set, but I am also surprised with them having the second latest Harbor stage set. Lake Street Dive seems to have a good following, so maybe Newport was thinking the turnout will be large for them.
I think the genre clashes are very intentional. It forces people who might not otherwise listen to a certain kind of music to do so, and in the case of Price/Childers it's not like there is a shortage of country on Friday. I obviously have a few frustrating overlaps, but you know what? In 5 years, I have never walked out of the Fort thinking "damn, that was ok, but I'm really disappointed I only got to see X and missed Y."
Also, back to the Nels Cline set, I am now thinking this will not be an instrumental set because a) Khruangbin plays right before, which would be two back to back (almost) instrumental sets and b) the Quad stage placement. Maybe it will be like the Steelism set last year, some instrumental and some songs with guest vocalists.
Also, just realizing now that Courtney Barnett and Jen Cloher are on different days, and with this show being the last one of CB's tour she will surely be hanging around... Very glad I have DT&F tickets for Saturday....
Lake Street Drive played the taping of Live From Here I saw at Tanglewood, I’d never heard their music before and I left NOT a fan. Maybe I don’t get it? She just oversang so much and it just sounded like 2nd rate adult contemporary. They did say it was all new songs, does the earlier stuff have more edge/soul?

Nah, they're very boring to me. Not knocking anyone who likes them, but I never got the hype.

Chris Thile was super into them so I kinda feel like if he likes them and I don’t, I have the problem? I dunno

No, you probably get it. If you weren't a fan of them live, it's probably not for you, though the recent addition of the keyboard/synth player may not have helped with the adult contemporary vibe.
not gonna lie, I thought people saying they wait for schedule to dig and discover were a crazy but now I realize...I may have overhyped myself on everyone, thus making it possible for any schedule to appease me.
Friday from 4PM onward is just going to wind up turning into a coinflip for me. Right now though it looks like Harper >> Wood Brothers >> Isbell, but man I love Sturgill.
CAAMP vs LCC is definitely one of the bigger conflicts for me as I've never seen either of them yet. Colter Wall & Matt The Electrician (museum) is another one that is gonna tear me up... fortunately they're right next to each other so hopefully I can split time between the two.
Fortunately, most of the conflicts I've got this year are between a bands I've never seen and ones I've seen multiple times, or between two bands I've seen multiple times each so they aren't that monumental of decisions.
Some of the stage selections really do confuse me though. Tuck & Patti at the Quad rather than Harbor? Wood Brothers at Harbor? Maybe they're not as widely known as I thought. Langhorne - the quad was packed for him last time... Surprised he's at the Harbor as well.

So did you guys figure they'd have a whole "Unannounced" set designated like that Saturday headliner? I figured it'd be more along the lines of what everyone's saying about Isbell & Crosby... Exciting!
Fri: Fantastic Negrito > Courtney Marie Andrews/Sidi Touré > This Is The Kit > Margo/Moses/Glorietta/Lucius clusterfuck > Sturgill Simpson > most of St. Vincent > Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit
Sat: Low Cut Connie > Hiss Golden Messenger > Daniel Norgren/Nicole Atkins museum > Beneath the Sacred Mountain > Jenny Lewis > Courtney Barnett > UNANNOUNCED
Sun: Twain/Pres. Hall > Khruangbin > The Weather Station > The Lone Bellow > Toots and the Maytals > Bermuda Triangle > Brandi Carlile > Glen Hansard > A Change Is Gonna Come
That Margo/Moses/Glorietta/Lucius run is fucking rough.
Not missing the Hiss set, but I would've liked to see Bedouine and POTR.
Bermuda/Brandi/Glen/Change is too bad but not surprising. My girlfriend's coming for her first Newport and those are all big ones for her
Courtney and Jenny only overlap for 20 minutes, i think you’re overstating this a little bit
Not overstating; they overlap for a third of each of their sets. That’s significant when it could have been easily avoided (and would have made sense to avoid it). As I mentioned earlier in this thread, it’s kind of a bummer in a year that they cut back on the indie folk at the fest they have the three best representatives of the sub-genre playing against one another on different stages.
To be fair though, if it comes off as an overstatement (and I see how it could), it’s because I’m incredibly bummed that the only 2 must-see bands on the lineup for me overlap by 40 minutes. Personal problem, I know. But I can’t be alone.

They don't overlap for 40 minutes though, it's only 20 minutes. Either way, stuff like this is normal at most festivals so I guess I'm used to it.

Sorry, I screwed up the quotes and you responded before I could fix it!
The two must sees for me are Leithauser/Rostam and Courtney. Who overlap for 40 minutes. Jenny is also high on the list. It’s easier to fault them for scheduling Jenny over Courtney than Hamilton over Courtney. Either way, it’s a bummer for me and is making me more negative on the schedule than I should be.
I understand that conflicts are part of a festival. Very rarely have I been to a fest though where my #1 and #2 overlap. Especially a festival for which the gap between #2 and #3 in terms of how much I want to see if pretty massive.
Like I said, personal problems. There will always be conflicts. It just seems when there are similar sub genres at a niche fest like Newport the scheduling could be more kind.

I get it. After first hearing Lake Street Dive on some college station, I found them equally exciting, at the Quad. Later that summer, they rocked out a free show in Central Park, with keyboard player. It was very electric, faster-paced, and for me, they were peaking. Haven't really liked their new material, and when I saw them at Clearwater Hudson River last year (sans keyboard player), was hugely disappointed. No energy at all. It had become Rachel and her backup band.
Rachel and Vilray (a tin pan alley kinda guy) should work well at the Harbor. That's where Nora Jones and Puss N Boots played.
Lake Street Dive is just not very good. Rachael has a good voice. But that's a dime a dozen these days. The songs are not good.
I believed I was the only one who thought this. I tried so hard to get into them. I even like the style of music that they play. I think my dislike stems from the fact that her voice doesn’t seem to sync up with the rest of the band. Or that it sometimes sounds more like a performance on the Voice. (I think in some ways the overproduction of the new album better syncs them all together)

Yeah, I just really don't get why anyone likes them. But, that's music, some things I like probably sound like nails on a chalkboard to others.

Agree. Unfortunately, with all kinds of great music out there by new performers, I see "dime a dozen" across Saturday' schedule. It sometimes seems friends are curating friends, and not expanding their own listening. I don't get such a high energy band like Low-cut Connie so early in a morning of a rather low key day.
I'll give them this -- it is one heck of a risk they are taking with an unannounced closing act. Should we start the Dylan rumor now?
