Lake Street Dive is just not very good. Rachael has a good voice. But that's a dime a dozen these days. The songs are not good.
Agree. Unfortunately, with all kinds of great music out there by new performers, I see "dime a dozen" across Saturday' schedule. It sometimes seems friends are curating friends, and not expanding their own listening. I don't get such a high energy band like Low-cut Connie so early in a morning of a rather low key day.
I'll give them this -- it is one heck of a risk they are taking with an unannounced closing act. Should we start the Dylan rumor now?

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the Cheech and Chong/Unannounced conflict.
But in all seriousness, the Cheech and Chong booking makes a little more sense now. Anybody closing the Quad on Saturday would be getting duped, it will most likely be emptied out with 20-25 minutes left in the set.

If unannounced is a "younger" band, I can't think of anybody other than Arcade Fire or Mumford that is big enough to potentially warrant not announcing. Mumford seems less likely though, they are polarizing even in a Folk crowd.

You’re saying Arcade Fire are not polarizing?
You're right, both are polarizing. It may not be this way anymore, in part due to the lackluster reception of their last album, but my impression was that Arcade Fire would be seen as a cooler booking than Mumford. So maybe instead of polarizing, I should say Mumford might be a less exciting choice. But my judgment may be off on that too.
Yeah I think Mumford is def more exciting than AF. But that’s me.
Mumford would be more exciting for me too, partially because I haven't seen them and I wasn't a fan of AF's last album. With that being said, either would be a good time for me

I loved Arcade Fire's latest album. Disagree with the scolds. Would love to see them as closing, however i am of the mind that unless it is a classical name, it would have to be a collaboration of a band with someone big. Ie Arcade Fire and someone.
1. The closing act(s) need to be cool with being unannounced. For me this means they have to have a connection to the Newport Family. I have a hard time imagining Paul Simon, who has no connection to Newport being willing to be an unnamed headliner. Neil Young or Bruce Springstein have never played but at least they have strong relationships with people who have. 2. It needs to be worthy of the past two Saturday night headliners... Wiclo, Patty Smith. Someone with a lot of respect and universally loved. 3. Think it needs to be about more than just good music. Needs to have a message in today's day and age or at least meaning to the festival.
I found this awesome quote from an interview Jay Sweet did in 2011 and it is amazing how he captures all of the names that have been bandied about on the list. Obviously Beck and Jack White have now been checked off. there is more to it if you want to read here: maimedandtamed.com/2011/05/04/newport-folk-festival-spotlight-jay-sweet/
We are upset that we have never been able to get Neil Young. We think Neil Young having never played Newport is a travesty to everybody. He was supposed to play with Buffalo Springfield in 1967, he was listed in the program, but about a week before the event their management sent a telegram to George Wein saying that due to a tonsillectomy they were going to have to cancel. We have the telegram you can see it on our Facebook page. The fact that Bruce Springsteen has never played a solo acoustic set either is really disheartening and the end all be all would have to be Joni Mitchell who doesn’t perform live anymore. Those are the three legends that are still alive that we think it would be incredibly beneficial for both them and us to show that they understand the musical heritage of the festival. Think about the musical history of this country, this festival is ten years older than Woodstock, Newport is our original festival in this country, it is the granddaddy that started them all. It is amazing how some bands still take it as another gig, but most of them realize that this festival should be on their bucket list.
Also the three artists who we have tried every year to get, but it has not happened would be Beck doing an acoustic set, Eddie Vedder, because we need people to carry on the Pete Seeger torch of musical political activism, and Jack White....

I agree that Paul Simon seems less likely than Neil or Bruce. I'm trying not to get my hopes up of somebody of that caliber, but man would that be so good. I think if Eddie pops up, Sunday is the day.
If anyone is near Rye Playland in Rye, NY, and into fireworks, roller coasters, turkish taffy, and sausages, I'll be appearing on the main stage with with some folks from the School of Rock at 7:30 and 9:30. The 10 PM artist is Unannounced.

Cat Stevens hasn't been mentioned lately. He's free all summer i think. Since there seems to be a lot of repeat acts, I'm praying it's not (and nothing against them) Dawes, My Morning Jacket or Jack White.
And quoting my Mother, "Lucius better not walk out on stage or I'm leaving. Freakin' lurkers"
