MLV was just doing an Instagram q&a and when asked “is middle brother reuniting at Newport this year?” he gave a curious sort of smile and no response.
Which leads me wonder: is this doable and where? Seems like no one talks about Dawes anymore but they have no competing dates (tour starts a few days later out west). We know Matt and john will be there.
Schedule wise, this is probably more likely folded into either DT or Glorietta aftershows, but ooheee would be a treat (especially for those who missed it a few years back)
I'm normally a fan of lake street, but i was disappointed by their set at levitate last weekend. She was just belting out every lyric and the band was overshadowed.

Because they stopped putting out good music
Also Matt's face reads more to me like "I don't think that's in the cards and I don't want to go into it"

Yea, agreed, though it is interesting. I'm assuming MLV will wind up at one of the Deer Tick aftershows, and surely Taylor will be floating around. I could see them playing one or two songs at the blues cafe maybe?
Also, Dawes is such a great band with really boring music. The most impressed I ever was with them was as Conor Oberst's backing band at NFF. They fucking killed it.

I've got a lot of love for those first 4 records. Wish we'd gotten one more big Newport blowout from them after All My Favorite Bands, but '65 Revisited and Middle Brother took obvious precedence for them in those years
New Caamp single on the Interwebz for any of you who may need extra convincing to get to the fest by 11 AM and skip Low Cut Connie.
Looks like this will be off of their second album to come out this year (although they are calling it Side B as the last was called Side A), due out July 23.

I would put money on Neil Young being Saturday’s headliner. It makes too much sense with the presence of POTR on the lineup, him playing Boston a week before, Crosby in attendance (Also a surprise), the lack of a legacy headliner on the lineup, etc. It has to be Neil.
P.S. I thought I was alone in my distaste for Lake Street Dive... don’t like them at all. I really liked what I heard of Rachael and Vilray when they were announced though.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

Alright, guys - as much as I love the idea of an unannounced headliner, I also kinda hate not being able to prepare for someone I may or may not be too familiar with the discography of. SO...I would love for people to throw out 5-10 "must listen" songs (or maybe a "must listen" album) for whomever you think may have a serious chance of headlining on Saturday. Basically...if that person does headline, what are some songs we almost certainly would hear? I figure this could be fun for those of you who ARE super fans of some of the hoped for acts. Obviously, we may all be wrong, which is why I don't want to devote a ton of time to exploring each potential artist without any insight. Thanks to any of you who choose to contribute!
Edit: Also, I've started listening to Neil Young's top songs according to Spotify, and I'm already mad at myself for not really listening to him before. Better late than never, I suppose...

Honestly near impossible to pick 5 for Neil Young but I will try!
Don't Let It Bring You Down Out on the Weekend Powderfinger Down By the River Old Man
Must listen albums - Harvest, After the Goldrush, Rust Never Sleeps, Zuma
Bruce Springsteen I'd suggest listening to the entirety of the album Nebraska.

While I agree Nebraska makes sense for Newport, as it’s his highly acclaimed folk-Americana-stripped down album, it may be better to stick with the official Springsteen on Broadway Spotify playlist (he added it himself, and I assume those are the songs he’s most prepped to play).

When I was a teenager my uncle got me this Greatest Hits album for Christmas and it helped me fall in love with Neil Young before branching out into full albums and learning more about him later on.
The only thing I'm REALLY bummed about so far is the Darlingside / Fantastic Negrito overlap on Friday. Fantastic Negrito blew my mind when I first listened to him after he was announced, but I've really been feeling Darlingside the last few weeks. As this is my first time at Newport, I have no idea how easy it is to get from one stage to another, but I'm thinking about catching the beginning of Darlingside and then heading over to check out FN, unless I just can't tear myself away.
The Colter Wall / Chris Smither overlap is a tough one, too. The rest of the schedule I think I can work with, but I need to do a deeper dive into some of the acts.
I know some of you have linked to your playlists; if any one else has one I'd love to check it out as we have a 4 hr plane ride followed by an 8 hr drive on Thursday!
Now that the schedule is out I am super excited and if it turns out Neil Young is the surprise I will be so happy! Though any of the others floated so far would be great, too. I still have lots of listening to do, and I'm kind of torn between making a plan or just winging it once we get there....
Also a little bit worried about when I'm going to find time to eat, lol. There are plenty of food options I'm looking forward to checking out.
So nice to have this forum to share the excitement!

I’m surprised they put Darlingside on that stage, but very cool that they are kicking off the festival! We’ve been to the Fort 4 years in a row, usually with a plan. From experience, the plan will fail halfway through the first day (which is a good thing!). I’d still highlight bands/artists you want to see and some down time to eat and maybe go out to one of the beer gardens. The food is awesome every year!! 14 more sleeps.....

Is there there a way to see this q&a? I couldn’t find it but I don’t know much about Instagram. If you could point the way I’d be most appreciative!
Based on potr placement and the length of the set I think if it’s neil it’s neil solo and jay just put potr there hoping he would come out and jam during that set too.
So that said

I sure am 21 (plus a decade...haha)! My dad has never been into music (so strange, I know...); my mom mostly listened to R&B (think Luther Vandross) when I was growing up. I didn't start branching out to non-top 40 radio until college, and I just never really stumbled upon or had a reason to listen to Neil Young until now, I guess.
And trust me, I'm not getting worked up about planning things out for Newport - this isn't my first rodeo! I DO have a bit of a plan, but as I've been making said plan, I constantly think to myself, "But...I could also see myself doing ______________ instead". Things will be what they will be - can't go wrong at Newport. Lobster roll breaks WILL happen though. Anyway...I just find all the dialogue leading up to Newport to be enjoyable as well, so I thought I would try to stir some more of that up.
Speaking of...I think we have Neil pretty well covered (thanks to those of you who have responded)! How about any of the other possibilities?

Neil hates Crosby. Well documented
I know... I posted an article about that a few pages back. I wouldn’t be surprised if Jay was trying to somehow get them in the same room just to see what would happen though. That’s why I emphasized the fact that they would both be surprised (Not knowing that one another would be there). Not that they would play on the same stage together... but maybe a conversation could take place that could lead to a CSNY reunion next year. Jay has made it very clear that they try to put pieces together like that but then it has to happen organically from there so as not to force anything.

Just realized if Neil ends up Saturday’s headliner, y’all should memorize every lyric to Ohio because we will likely hear it in each of the 3 headlining sets.
I think we are missing something: Sunday is still sort of Unannounced.
Jon Batiste and the Dap Kings will absolutely have special guests. A Change is Gonna Come makes you think of iconic folk singers, but with a show put together by Batiste and Binky -- and the memory of Sharon Jones still strong -- what is in store? It could be Buddy Guy and, well, how about Keith Richards joining them? But a Change is Gonna Come. Aretha makes sense, but will likely still be off the road. Wouldn't be shocked to see a Stephen Colbert cameo. I think Sunday quite worthy of conversation.
P.S. -- Reading the posts about Lake Street Dive, what a hoot and a holler if Lake Street Dive is headlining on Saturday.

Anyone think our old pal Mavis could drop by for A Change Is Gonna Come? She's in Illinois on Friday, but free after that. She's an OG racial activist.

I highly doubt Lake St. is a headliner. They're simply not big enough of a name, and I have no idea why they would be unannounced. We have to be expecting something bigger here, even if it's Arcade Fire (July 18th in Boston).
