P.S. -- Reading the posts about Lake Street Dive, what a hoot and a holler if Lake Street Dive is headlining on Saturday.
I highly doubt Lake St. is a headliner. They're simply not big enough of a name, and I have no idea why they would be unannounced. We have to be expecting something bigger here, even if it's Arcade Fire (July 18th in Boston).
Now that last post was funny. I was joking, obviously. Same with the Bob Dylan reference = crazy expectations.
As for Sunday, would not really be surprised if Batiste uses his influence to bring in the "bigger" name. Look at the guests they book on Colbert and with whom he has played alongside. He probably chats up every one of them. Did think of Mavis, too, but rather soon to headline again? -- although who better to sing about a Change is Gonna come? Or she could be filing in for a previously booked Aretha. Or they are waiting.
(But why would a band like Lake Street Dive be unannounced? Or my original pick before they decided to summer in Iceland? -- Of Monsters and Men? Because these are bands not currently touring. Others, like Paul Simon have been fighting scalpers of late and would not want his name to turn NFF into a scalper's nest.
I vote the Holograms. (oops, I liked myself...meant the gif above, although I'm OK with me)
Per a source, “NFF asked Paul Simon as offered as much as they could, but it didn’t happen. His band is huge and costly to travel.”
If he did somehow wind up playing, that would be so incredible. I've been wearing Graceland out this past week.
I guess if the band being costly to travel with is the issue... solo acoustic could be possible? Simon and Garfunkel reunion? (most outlandish prediction so far, I know I know.)

That’s the name I’ve heard. Paul Simon. The source is guessing, but he has been pretty spot on in years past (especially with aftershow/unannounced artists)
This one I'll be more surprised if he's not there. And even if Crosby and Young manage to set aside their loathing I'm still sure Leon Bridges will be involved in the best version of "Ohio" we'll hear all weekend. It's gonna be this year's "fortunate son" and I am ready to decide who wears it best.

I heard that they are enlisting CSNY to help bring Simon & Garfunkel back together.
They are all a bit crazy. One year Emerson, Lake and Palmer played Jones Beach, and they all left in separate limos, never saying a word to each in the lot.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher
Keep in mind that Mr. Foxx above said that Deer Tick was playing the fest this year, and on the main stage.
Also said that Justin Vernon was going to be at one of the Deer Tick aftershows last year.
I did? Well people only remember when you are wrong. anyway my “guesses” this year are Tank and the Bangas, JD McPherson, Caamp, Tyler Childers, Lone Bellow, that Bridges Guy, maybe that Crosby guy, and maybe that Simpson guy. Much of this stuff happens organically the weekend of the fest. Lobster on...
Never heard. Listening now, and I like it. Reminds me of Tallest Man on Earth (but doesn’t quite hit me like a TMOE song would).
With that said (this is just being picky at this point because I do genuinely like the lineup), enough with the singer songwriters. We need more bands/collectives on this lineup. If you look at the artist images on the website, only 5 have more than 2 people. Out of those 5, 2 are still based around a singer songwriter (JD McPherson and Jason Isbell, who at least is billed with the 400 Unit). If they really wanted to, this fest could hire one highly skilled backing band that could play with 90% of the artists at this point.
That goes to say I am hoping for more rawk (with a w, like Gogol Bordello, Deer Tick, MMJ, Dawes, J Roddy Walston in yesteryears) and more bluegrass (Darlingside the only pseudo-bluegrass band on the lineup? How can you have a folk fest in the folk revival period without banjos?)
Deer Tick is playing the Main stage this year. Negrito will rock it

Thanks for pointing this out. It’s good for managing expectations.
To be fair, Deer Tick could still be playing the main stage. Deer Tick as the unannounced headliner! (Hell, one of Eaux Claires’ unannounced headliners the curator of the fest.)

I updated my NFF app last night, and I think some set times shifted slightly, but I'm not 100% sure - it just seems that I can catch pieces of sets now that before almost completely overlapped with something else I didn't want to miss. Maybe someone else has screenshots and can compare? Either way - just wanted to let y'all know to take another look since it could potentially change your "plan" a bit! (:

I noticed that this morning too. A matter of 5-10 minutes, but it helps!

Lyte worked out weird for me this year, so I've got a Sunday ticket I can't sell because it's part of a 3 day. I'd be happy to get rid of it for face value, I'll be there all 3 days so I could show you in advance Friday or Saturday (or at Deer Tick Saturday night.) I'd have to take payment in the parking lot and walk in with you.
More of a longshot but I missed out on Shakey Newport's Eve tickets, so I'd trade straight up for two of those as well.
Out there thought: the unannounced headliner is Newport’s first hip hop booking.
Why unannounced? To prevent complaints re: the lineup leading up the fest. To get the attendees who would typically leave and skip the act to actually give it a shot, and perhaps become converts to the style. To let the act prove their spot on a folk lineup in a huge fashion (before people have the chance to complain). To make the moment extra special in which the press can write all about the bold booking decision.

Who do you think would be big enough and fitting enough to do that? Honestly, the only name that immediately jumps to mind is Kendrick Lamar, though maybe The Roots (Leaving Jason Isbell as the only headliner this year that won't involve a late night show band) or even Black Star (I think they played a couple reunion shows this summer?)

- Kendrick - Chance - Nas (with the same backing band he recorded with on American Legacies) - Some combination of GZA, RZA, Wu Tang (there is that Tiny Desk with GZA being backed by the Soul Rebels) - I hadn’t thought of Black Star, but that’s a good one. - Real long shot but some incarnation of the Blacroc project (that would be pretty accessible to a folk crowd) - The Roots came to mind as well, given their history with Newport Jazz - A Tribe Called Quest - Lauryn Hill - Not quite hip hop, but I think Frank Ocean would make sense too
I’m sure there are a lot of other potential acts too that I am skipping over

I feel like they'd be taking a big risk not announcing the headliner if it is a rap artist. Could see a large amount of the crowd unfamiliar with some of the work in those names listed.

Like I said, super out there prediction.
But the more I think about it, the more it makes sense. In some ways, I actually think it could work because a large portion of the crowd would be unfamiliar. It would prevent that contingency of the crowd from leaving before the headliner. It gives Jay the chance to come out on stage and introduce the act and his reason for booking the act as well as discuss what “folk” actually means to him. If it doesn’t work, he could also blame it on it being “unannounced” rather than the artist itself. Booking a rap artist would itself be a huge risk, regardless of whether or not it was unannounced. And in some ways, would Dylan’s electric set have changed the trajectory of music and the festival if everyone knew he was going to play electric in advance? An unannounced hip hop headliner could be the next Newport moment.

Don't think you could get away with hip hop this year. A lot of folk seem to think they aren't getting their money's worth already due to not enough big names(not me), so I can't see it being someone everyone's not already familiar with.
I feel like the headliners should just always be unannounced. To quote a previous post, "Surprises are fun." I know Jay has talked about toying with the idea of no artist announcements at all, and everyone figures it out on the day of, but that obviously put lesser-known artists at a disadvantage. The headliners are always someone people already know, and Newport clearly doesn't need anyone's name recognition to sell tickets, so leaving just those 3 spots unannounced every year could be a fun compromise on Jay's crazy idea.

I'd be over the moon is Chance played Newport, and I've noted the fact that Raury has guest vocals on "Blessings" in the past. Kendrick with Kamasi Washington would make a ton of sense for Jazz, but I could see it at Folk too.
That said I don't think they'd make this kind of thing a surprise--they obviously take letting people get familiar with the artists pretty seriously, which to me means whoever the headliner is will be someone most folk are already familiar with. I think you'd be more likely to have the place empty out if, say, Chance opened with "No Problem" and the Folk didn't know what else he was capable of.
Who else has out there predictions for headliner though? I think on the thread I've seen people mention Beck, Jack White, and of course Simon, Springsteen and Neil Young (the latter of which I still think is correct.) I like this game and not that many other names have been tossed out. Would a Rilo Kiley reunion be big enough to headline? Or is that just for me.

Monsters of Folk? No announced involvement from anyone in MMJ for the first time in, what, 6 years?
