Who else has out there predictions for headliner though? I think on the thread I've seen people mention Beck, Jack White, and of course Simon, Springsteen and Neil Young (the latter of which I still think is correct.) I like this game and not that many other names have been tossed out. Would a Rilo Kiley reunion be big enough to headline? Or is that just for me.
Monsters of Folk? No announced involvement from anyone in MMJ for the first time in, what, 6 years?

I believe Mumford & Sons was another guess. Maybe Cat Stevens / Yusuf Islam. U2 unplugged? I can't see that happening. Eddie Vedder was another name thrown around. Maybe a Bono, Bruce & Eddie set(a man can dream)
Anyone know when they usually announce who's playing with Deer Tick? I forget and am being too lazy and to dig into the web for it.
I'd be over the moon is Chance played Newport, and I've noted the fact that Raury has guest vocals on "Blessings" in the past. Kendrick with Kamasi Washington would make a ton of sense for Jazz, but I could see it at Folk too.
That said I don't think they'd make this kind of thing a surprise--they obviously take letting people get familiar with the artists pretty seriously, which to me means whoever the headliner is will be someone most folk are already familiar with. I think you'd be more likely to have the place empty out if, say, Chance opened with "No Problem" and the Folk didn't know what else he was capable of.

I'm not sure Rilo Kiley is much more known than Chance to the average NFF attendee (so if you rule out one was an unannounced headliner because of familiarity; I think you could rule out both). Also, while I think they could headline as a reunion show, I don't think it's likely Jenny will be playing two sets in a few hours time (I would love to be wrong though).
Some other "out there predictions" (some moreso than others) - Tom Waits, Dolly Parton, The Heartbreakers w/ guests on vocals, Florence & the Machine, Mumford and Sons, Arcade Fire, Gillian and Dave, Emmylou Harris, Alison Kraus and Robert Plant, Garth Brooks, The National, Phil Lesh and Bob Weir (or some version of the Grateful Dead), Buffalo Springfield, The Kinks, Donovan, Fleetwood Mac (latest incarnation), James Taylor, Jack Johnson, Eddie Vedder, Whiskeytown reunion, Uncle Tupelo reunion

Cat Stevens would explain the new security feature this year.
Saw him on his last tour, and security was bananas.
Hey everyone, new to the board but have been following your conversations for years. Really appreciate all the information I’ve gotten over the years. As far as unannounced, Monsters of Folk would be a dream set for me but it is Newport and in Jay we trust so I really think we’re going to be fine.

Can't see this happening without any rumblings or anything on Instagram where Jenny is basically showing an almost constant view into her touring and rehearsal life.

Gillian and Dave would be amazing!
As amazing as that would be, that would be the 2nd unannounced Dave and Gillian set.
Chance the Rapper? Probably the best first time true hip hop performer who could bring a variety of music to NFF. BUT they'd now be entering a new world of fans, genre, and competition, while turning off some of the base, with little chance to outdo the competition. Yes, rap is music of the people, of the streets, based on the dozens, before that arguably Shakespeare. But we've barely scratched the surface of the alternative folk-country-blues genre. Dead against it.
Still think the big show is Sunday. Predicting Aretha was the original booking, but with her currently off the road, thinking fall the people and bands who have covered A Change is Gonna Come (i.e. Seal, Passenger...though never count out this being Aretha's day to return). Sprinkle in Buddy Guy, Leon Bridges, and Gary Clark, Jr. Perhaps Mavis or Brittany or Kam Franklin to honor Sharon Jones? Fun guess: and Stephen Colbert. That's why Batiste is the "penultimate" performer of this festival.
question(s) regarding unannounced : as we get closer, it's possible or even likely that some sort of info will leak on who saturday's headliner is. the questions i pose are:
1) how has this info gotten out in the past? I know last year someone on board knew about the Nate Rateliff unannounced at least a week prior
Someone leaked James Taylor to the Boston Globe. Sometimes the performers accidentally leak it themselves on twitter or their websites. And at this point, I do not want to know.

Mmm Heartbreakers with Guests would be really special, I remember now that someone tossed out Stevie Nicks backed by the Heartbreakers early in the year. Buffalo Springfield is an interesting thought too, what with Neil Young looking so possible.

I actually kind of love that we're a week out and don't even have a solid rumor. I've been following this board for like 4 years now and I feel like y'all have predicted or leaked everything. All this speculation is super fun, and I've made it to the place where I'm into the rest of the lineup enough that I don't even care if it's a letdown.
'Course it's gonna be Neil Young and then it'll be correctly predicted again.
Nicks backed by Deer Tick makes more sense though. Petty or HB has never played the fest.
I suggested this possibility to my girlfriend yesterday. Would be awesome...
Yeah I'd be down for Stevie Nicks backed by pretty much anyone. The heartbreakers idea came to me when Benmont Tench played with the Watsons a few years ago, of course at the time I figured with Petty

Don't we sometimes get some info/leaks closer to the fest when certain artists start rehearsing together for the set they'll play? Particularly if they aren't regular collaborators?
MMJ unnanounced/backing Waters was leaked by one of them posting an Instagram photo showing arrows for MMJs room and another for Waters' room. At least that's where I first learned of them backing him.
Haven’t seen Black Keys mentioned. Hasn’t Jay mentioned them as a yearly invite? Not sure they would live up to many of our expectations though, but the average attendee may dig it.
