I believe Mumford & Sons was another guess. Maybe Cat Stevens / Yusuf Islam. U2 unplugged? I can't see that happening. Eddie Vedder was another name thrown around. Maybe a Bono, Bruce & Eddie set(a man can dream)
Anyone know when they usually announce who's playing with Deer Tick? I forget and am being too lazy and to dig into the web for it.
Cat Stevens would explain the new security feature this year.
Saw him on his last tour, and security was bananas.

What is the new security feature this year?
No re-entry is the only new security feature I'm aware of. As a result they extended the festival grounds to include the bathrooms and ATM that previously were just outside of the gates and they also have a bag check tent as well.
I have a 3-day that is not going to be used on Friday, if anyone wants to walk-in with us on Friday, and cover some beer tokens.
Also, still desperately trying to trade our Friday Deer Ticks for Sunday Deer Ticks, since our whole group will not be there on Friday. Would love any leads.
Love the Jay rant at the end! Was there a clue in there when he said “sometimes it’s age before youth.”?
I also loved his final rant. In fact, it was listening to him on the All Songs Considered podcast last year that made me finally pull the trigger and try for tickets. I have been wanting to go since forever, but always figured it was too far, too expensive, and then the kids came along, etc. But hearing him talk about how tickets go on sale before any artists are announced and just the general philosophy and vibe of the festival made it irresistible for me. So glad I was able to make it work (fingers crossed, because I still have so many things to do before I actually get there!)

What time do y'all try to get to the Fort? I know gates open at 10:00, but is there usually already a long line at that time? From what I heard on the podcast I guess it is safe to assume that most people arrive early? I know there are definitely some early performers that I don't want to miss, especially Friday. Thanks!

I usually get there between 9:15 and 9:30. They do a security check and scan tickets for early arrivers and let them hang out in a roped-off waiting area, so when gates open, everyone who arrived before 9:45 or so just waltzes in at once.
MLV was just doing an Instagram q&a and when asked “is middle brother reuniting at Newport this year?” he gave a curious sort of smile and no response.
Which leads me wonder: is this doable and where? Seems like no one talks about Dawes anymore but they have no competing dates (tour starts a few days later out west). We know Matt and john will be there.
Schedule wise, this is probably more likely folded into either DT or Glorietta aftershows, but ooheee would be a treat (especially for those who missed it a few years back)
Because they stopped putting out good music
Also Matt's face reads more to me like "I don't think that's in the cards and I don't want to go into it"
I definitely prefer Dawes' first three albums to albums #4 - #6, but they keep getting better live. When I last saw them in early 2017, the highlight of the show was one of my least favorite songs in their repertoire, "My Girl To Me," because they jammed like mid-70's The Band and Little Feat at the peak of their powers.

I will agree with this. Their show at the Beacon last year was the best I’ve seen them. But the new songs are always the worst and I question the direction they’re going

When they were doing that Middle Brother tour that would always have 2 out of 3 bands (so some shows were Deer Tick/Delta Spirit/Middle Brother while other were Dawes/Deer Tick/Middle Brother and the like) I knew my friend who loved Deer Tick would be into Middle Brother but was concerned how he'd accept the Dawes set. I considered them softer and more mellow than the other acts, even though I liked them, and was expecting him to dislike it. But he came away thinking they were great and I definitely felt that Taylor's guitar parts in his songs were improved and I've always been a fan of Griffin and his drum-faces.

It's always kind of sad to grow apart from a musical artist whom, at one time, you identified as a personal favorite.
The day may come when I hold out for a Dawes show where they play "Nothing Is Wrong" or "Stories Don't End" in their entirety.
count me in the opposition here. if i were to rank the names most commonly thrown out around recently, i'd prob go:
1. bruce 2. arcade fire 3. neil 6. mumford
[ducks flying tomatoes]
I think they would be a good headliner too. Seemed like a lot of folks at Forecastle enjoyed their set last weekend. Though I would def be more game for Neil

I'll take Arcade Fire over Mumford 100%, but if we have been led on for months with an unannounced headliner and it's a band that tours consistently and will (hypothetically) continue to tour consistently for decades, I will be very disappointed. I know there are arguments for having a legacy performer that is theoretically past their prime, but I think anything less than a Neil, Bruce, Paul, etc. or an incredibly unique reunion/pairing (Monsters of Folk, Stevie Nicks w Deer Tick, other mentioned on here) level headliner on Saturday will leave most people pretty disappointed.
