I know Jay's mentioned money as an issue with Bob Weir, but I wonder if there's any potential for a Bob Weir/Phil Lesh set as our unannounced headliner
Similar thoughts. The last few times I’ve seen Arcade Fire, I bought discount tickets from Groupon...
I would also be a little bummed that Jay couldn’t book anything bigger than Courtney and Cheech as the 2 and 3 on a day that Arcade Fire was headlining.
Hey remember in 2015 when everyone thought we were getting Neil, U2, Bruce, Paul AND Bob? And then everyone (including myself) got butthurt?
Good times.
I think everyone has fairly realistic expectations this year, especially considering this is our first unannounced headliner and most of the big names we have announced are friendly to the festival/repeat performers. We are also missing the "legend" this year (I mean, besides Toots and... Cheech & Chong), but there is no Prine, Waters, Nash, Staples, Patti Smith like we have had every year. It just fits that we will be getting SOMEONE legendary to play that Saturday night spot, and I don't think it qualifies as being "butthurt" if we got Mumford or Arcade Fire, people we will realistically have the chance to see for years and years and whose legacies are anything but cemented in history.
count me in the opposition here. if i were to rank the names most commonly thrown out around recently, i'd prob go:
1. bruce 2. arcade fire 3. neil 6. mumford
[ducks flying tomatoes]
but if we have been led on for months with an unannounced headliner and it's a band that tours consistently and will (hypothetically) continue to tour consistently for decades, I will be very disappointed
Also we haven't been "led on" about literally anything. Jay has confirmed that some people will not be there. Besides that, all of the names we are speculating about are just that, speculation. It's not like Newport has given us any sort of hint about who it could be just to pull the rug out from under us. It's all in our heads at this point.
Also we haven't been "led on" about literally anything.
"More artists/announcements coming" on the website since regular announcements stopped. Less artists on Saturday than other 2 days. Now, for the first time in Newport Folk history, an unannounced headliner spot on what is arguably the least "packed" day (not saying anything about quality of the artists, I am probably most excited for Saturday than any other day, but there is no doubt that Saturday is the least "expensive" booking day).
I'd say that could be qualified as being led on to believe something huge is going to happen, and I don't think I'm alone in thinking Arcade Fire wouldn't be enough to fulfill our expectations

I'm really just trying to pump the brakes here, but you guys can feel free to continue to call out what you think you deserve.
I agree, I just think it's fair to point out predicting one legendary act as a headliner isn't the same as the 2015 overhyped "U2, Bruce, Neil" all at the same fest

I think it's wise to pump the brakes, and I say that as a guy who has shown up on this thread to yell "BRUUUCE" more than once the last few years. Jay did just go on a rant downplaying the importance of a major headliner, and most people here (self included) said they loved it.
I'd like to draw attention to the other half of what he said which is that he's trying to make a space where the person playing at 11 has the same audience as the person playing at 6:15. Someone here mentioned surprise that Darlingside was opening the fest, but I think it makes a lot more sense in that context. Some of my fondest memories are from the harbor tent (Tall Tall Trees, Christopher Paul Stelling, Lady Lamb, Lucius + Mavis) and I am as hyped for Darlingside as anyone this year. The headliner could be someone I don't watch a second of and I'm still sure it will be my favorite weekend of the year.

Hozier in 2014 on the Harbor Stage. Rainy, dead silence, choir behind him. That was an amazing set, I believe at 1210pm? Darlingside is going to be amazing. Apologies if they were mentioned before, but Monsters of Folk as a possible headliner? Not a huge draw for me, but Jay's podcast comment makes me think the headliner is not a huge one.

I agree with this. I think I've started off every year I've been at the festival with the harbor stage and am definitely continuing that this year for Darlingside!
Having said that, I'm still completely puzzled how Darlingside is on the Harbor and Tuck & Patti are opening the Quad. It definitely seems like those two should be flipped.

also agree on the darlingside, saw them in nyc a few months back and they are truly stunning live. would have planned to be there for entire set, as clsoe as possible, regardless of where they landed on schedule. now it just looks like i need to get out of bed a bit earlier on friday, both due to their start time and the apparent growing love for the band!
Unrealistic unannounced headliner want #175983412706: Keith Richards, sticks around Sunday to play with his buddy, Buddy Guy, during A Change is Gonna Come
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher
Friday and Saturday schedules have had a lot of chatter on this thread, but I am finding Sunday with the largest gaps where I am unsure where I want to be. This is generally OK, because I am so tired that I just want to rest by Sunday. That being said, curious what people are thinking during the following sets as none of the acts have really captured me.

2:15 - 3:15 Nicole Atkins 2:45 - 3:40 Toots and the Maytals 3:15 - 4:05 Gary Clark Jr 2:45 - 3:15 Johnny Fritz
Here I go, quoting my own post because I am OK with myself (paraphrasing an earlier post.) So, just realized that Becca Mancari is 1/3 of Bermuda Triangle who I have really been enjoying. So, I think that helps.

I will also be interested to hear what people have to say about the earlier acts; for the afternoon I definitely don't want to miss Gary Clark Jr., but also would like to check out Toots. As this is my first time, I have no idea how feasible it would be to catch the first part of Toots and then head over to Gary Clark Jr.
Also, the comments about Darlingside are really making my Friday decision tough! I guess I will start out at Harbor and if Darlingside doesn't captivate completely head over to Fantastic Negrito, which I know is going to be amazing? Halp!
Sunday's just a weird day for me. Other than Charlie Parr there and A Change Is Gonna Come, there isnt much in the "must-see" category but there's also not really any set that I'm totally turned off by.
I could be just fine sitting at the harbor the entire day until the headline or just wander around the whole time catching pieces of everything.
I love that our interests are so varied and that I get to learn about other artists through this board. Sunday has the most conflict for me. Brandi, Langhorne, Glen, and A Change Is Gonna Come was my worst nightmare come true, lol.
