ilovethisgame and I got dinner at Binge BBQ before Jane Pickens last year and it was really really good, also very close to all the different aftershow spots.
Biggest conflict: Brandi Carlisle and Langhorne Slim. Total Clusterf*: Nicole Atkins / Toots & The Maytals / Gary Clark,Jr. / Charlie Parr / Bermuda Triangle before I have to deal with the above conflict Decision Made: Have never seen a full Preservation hall performance, but War and Treaty look something special! Reason to Arrive Early: Low Cut Connie Acts that are Misplaced on Schedule: Low Cut Connie, Glen Hansard Can't Miss New Act for Me: Daniel Norgren I Miss: Would love to see Reignwolf invited back Worst Decision: Missing all of Friday. Lineup is stacked!
Need Help!:
-- I keep hearing about Khruangbin, and I get it, because this is 2018's version of the San Francisco sound circa 1968, massive reverb and all. Is there more that I am missing? -- Shakey Graves is must see, but is Beneath the Sacred Mountain really just performers covering the Byrds? -- The fabulous Jenny Lewis or Courtney Barnett, whose voice always makes me feel like she could care less. But I can't stop listening.
Still Bothered: Newport didn't honor its roots this year (I hope that doesn't mean Dawes is the surprise headliner). Gotta stop thinking that the old folksingers were about "trains" while today is a pool of poets. Trains are also about detachment, economic woes, working for nothing, no work, running from things we need to face, like Jim Crow. Bothersome that an icon like Arlo Guthrie wants to play, but doesn't get invited; that in five years I've never seen Baez, Collins, or Peter and Paul. Some like Joe Purdy and Charlie Barr carry the tradition, and maybe that's what matters. But no room at the inn, even as wandering minstrels, for Tom Paxton, Suzzy Roche, Christine Lavin. Just a small gripe, easily cured by Neil Young.
Ughhhh. I know there is a week to go, and Newport is its own ecosystem, but weather, especially Sunday, could be buckets. Worse: If we get a thunderstorm, and we have to empty out, does the new security mean the day is done?

Sunday is only showing as 40% right now. Also too early to get worried. This forecast has already changed so much.

Yep. Was just gonna write in an edit. Greatest memory still is the sun breaking through for my goddess, Mavis. I think we've had delays, but hate to see a 30-minute thunderstorm be an issue. I am really pumped this year!
This is my first time planning on hanging out around the city after the fest on Thurs, Fri, and Sat nights. I assume most restaurants and bars are nightmares the weekend of the fest? Any tips? Places to try? Places to make a reservation? Fun bars that may not be too crowded? We will be staying across the bridge/causeway with the beaches (across the water from the cliff walk, I think).
We go to the Red Parrot pre-Festival on Thursday night every year... we usually eat pretty early so we can get plenty of rest for the weekend and we’ve never had to wait (The restaurant has 3 floors). It’s a little touristy but we enjoy the food and the drinks are outstanding. Over the last couple of years we’ve been closing the festival by eating at speakeasy on Sunday night... sometimes a wait but I’ve seen multiple performers there eating before they head over to aftershows (Maybe because it’s really dark inside and they can get some privacy - also, extremely generous pours of their liquor).
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher
Darlingside -> explore/beer or Sidi Toure -> Erika Wennerstrom -> Margo Price (leave early) -> Moses Sumney -> (come late) Glorietta -> either late to Lucius or in time for Rachael and Vilray -> some of Ben Harper and Musselwhite -> Sturgill -> St Vincent -> Jason Isbell
Saturday:
Caamp -> (come late) Curtis Harding -> nothing I need to see for about 2 hours; may catch some of Hiss and Daniel Norgren (most disappointing scheduling of the fest for my preferences) -> Phoebe Bridgers -> glimpse of Sacred Mountain -> Shakey Graves -> Jenny Lewis (leave early) -> glimpse of Courtney Barnett -> Hamilton and Rostam -> Unnannounced
Sunday:
Split War and Treaty and Preservation Hall -> glimpse of Khruangbin -> Passenger -> Lone Bellow -> Toots and the Maytals -> Bermuda Triangle (leave early) -> Brandi Carlile -> (end of) Langhorne -> Change is Gonna Come
Saw someone suggest that John Mayer could be the headliner.
Hope not. But he’ll be in Montreal the night before. Haven’t heard his name mentioned here. I feel like he and Jack Johnson are those acts that could pop up one year but that nobody on this board would really want.

I'd actually like John Mayer as headliner (though I doubt it) because I don't think he'd play a ton of his tunes but maybe some Dead songs and some other covers. Not expecting it though. I like John Mayer Trio version of Mayer. Not a big fan of his solo pop stuff. But I do think he's a great guitarist.

I know we rule Dead and Co out because of $$$, but a lot of them are in the area and available.
John Mayer in Montreal the night before. Oteil is in eastern PA the weekend before and NY the weekend after. Bobby in PA the weekend before. Haven’t checked the others...
But booking Mayer would also be a fun workaround if they strike out on The Dead (and it’s various forms) each year; if you book John he may bring out Bobby for some songs.
EDIT: I guess booking them and only giving them that scheduled time slot to play would be kind of criminal.

I mean....if I had to choose 5 artists to be the "surprise" act it definitely wouldn't be Mayer but I certainly wouldn't hate it. I feel like he'd be the kind of artist that "gets it" in terms of Newport and the vibe and collaboration spirit.

Just talking about this tonight. In prior years when there was a bumpy one coming through the recommendation was go inside the buildings or to your cars and wait it out. Same question.. if there is a significant rumbler 1% could get indoors. Curious what the plan is for the 99%. Sat and Sun are starting to look better but we are still too far out. Talk on the local stations of picking up 3-4 inches of much needed rain in the next week.
Middletown is overall a good place to eat because of the better parking and good food at lower prices: Anthony's Seafood (I believe it was self serve) was terrific. Only went to Flo's once on a recommendation -- but you really have to be into fried seafood. I prefer mine fresh, and recall a restaurant right around the corner from Flo's we preferred, with easy parking, but the name escapes me. Will research.
In town, absolutely recommend Scales and Shells, but got very lucky with parking, and best to go latewhen the crowd thins. We heard a lot about the fancy dansy, The Mooring. Beautiful setting on the water. Great oysters! But pricey and not a place to hang.
Anyone having a lobster and clam house party, would be glad to contribute or sing for my supper.
Longshot, obv- but looking for aftershow tickets to any night. Decided to go to NFF late this year and missed out.
DT and Glorietta preferred but would be open to whatever becomes available. Thanks!
Our group could potentially have some extra tickets to Glorietta on Friday and maybe Saturday sorry to be vague, but we have people coming in from all over the country (20 folks) and really aren’t sure who wants to go to what. We will like likely know Thursday

I have not budged from number 6 in the queue for Glorietta. If anyone has a line on either that or DT for Friday, I'll buy all your beers for the night.
Last year we went to the Revolving Door for dinner one night and it was excellent but it may not be open anymore, I can't really tell from the website. We might try Bouchard's on Thursday because it's our only free night and never have tried it, but we did stay there once and it was great. I think that was the year that Wilco and Blitzen Trapper did the experimental Friday night.
Belle's at the Newport Shipyard serves an incredible breakfast and you get to look at some amazing boats.
The fort lineup is a cluster for me. Might have to just wear running shoes. If John Mayer is the headliner I'll listen for a few songs then take the opportunity to take an early ferry to get dinner then good seats for FJM.

I was thinking about this also. If severe weather came I would think they would rather have people go to cars than sit in the middle of a field hoping not to get hit! It looks like the weather is heading toward a drier outlook.
This year will be my first Newport Folk festival! Since I am not familiar with a lot of the artists I thought I’d get suggestions from people who are more familiar with this year’s artist list. In the past I’ve gravitated towards a heavier easy listening than straight folk music. Anyone have any suggestions?
I know I like:
JD McPherson Rachael and Vilray Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit Shakey Graves Gary Clark Junior The Lone Bellow
I don't care if it rains all week up to Friday morning. Once Friday morning comes around, I want partly cloudy and dry weather. No summonings like 2012.

A starting point is to read the bands people plan to see starting on page 119 or 120. But discovery is better, and there is no accounting for taste with so many styles of music represented. My son is 28, likes EDM, and will be attending with us for the first time this year after attending Firefly and Governor's Ball. He's pumped about Shakey Graves. Who knew? And I see on your list. Don't think because the Museum or Harbor Stages are small the acts can't be as good. Check them out. You are not only apt to catch someone new and interesting, but have a Kris Kristofferson walk in and play a few songs. Or catch another Hozier or Nora Jones at the tiny Harbor stage. Welcome to Newport!

Check out he Wood Brothers. Early stuff is more mellow/acoustic and later stuff has a little more energy to it and a full band sound.
Langhorne Slim is someone I discovered because of Newport Folk (I knew the name but first saw him at DT after shows and at NFF in his own set).
St. Vincent is continually on the rise and has an awesome stage show. I just saw her in Boston for Boston Calling and her set was great. Check out her material.
Courtney Barnett has an extremely unique quality to her songs and I've liked most of what I've heard from her.
Glen Hansard was someone I saw at NFF because he was playing between two acts I really wanted to see and although I didn't dislike him going into it I also wasn't a well versed fan of his. His set made me tear up so you know he puts on a great show.
