This year will be my first Newport Folk festival! Since I am not familiar with a lot of the artists I thought I’d get suggestions from people who are more familiar with this year’s artist list. In the past I’ve gravitated towards a heavier easy listening than straight folk music. Anyone have any suggestions?
I know I like:
JD McPherson Rachael and Vilray Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit Shakey Graves Gary Clark Junior The Lone Bellow
Any suggestions?
Thank you!!
With this in mind, my suggestions re: artists you should check out:
Tyler Childers (similar to Jason Isbell) Hamilton Leithauser and Rostam (similar to Shakey Graves) Brandi Carlile (similar to Lone Bellow) Fantastic Negrito (similar to Gary Clark Jr) War and Treaty (a mix between Rachael and Vilray and Gary Clark Jr)
Just talking about this tonight. In prior years when there was a bumpy one coming through the recommendation was go inside the buildings or to your cars and wait it out. Same question.. if there is a significant rumbler 1% could get indoors. Curious what the plan is for the 99%. Sat and Sun are starting to look better but we are still too far out. Talk on the local stations of picking up 3-4 inches of much needed rain in the next week.
I was thinking about this also. If severe weather came I would think they would rather have people go to cars than sit in the middle of a field hoping not to get hit! It looks like the weather is heading toward a drier outlook.
I would assume there is some precedence with this happening at another festival that does not allow reentry, right? I can only recall it happening at Lollapalooza (and maybe ACL); which allows reentry (both do).
I would hope if they were cancelling sets for storms they’d figure a way to let people back in. Not sure how they’d accomplish that though if they don’t prepare in advance (e.g., wristbands, tickets that can scan twice?)

k2b when I see you I am going to bitch slap you so hard for saying Brandi is like Lone Bellow. And im'a bringing ilovethisgame as backup. I love Lone Bellow but Brandi is like no other, you blasphemous heathen!
Middletown is overall a good place to eat because of the better parking and good food at lower prices: Anthony's Seafood (I believe it was self serve) was terrific. Only went to Flo's once on a recommendation -- but you really have to be into fried seafood. I prefer mine fresh, and recall a restaurant right around the corner from Flo's we preferred, with easy parking, but the name escapes me. Will research.
In town, absolutely recommend Scales and Shells, but got very lucky with parking, and best to go latewhen the crowd thins. We heard a lot about the fancy dansy, The Mooring. Beautiful setting on the water. Great oysters! But pricey and not a place to hang.
Anyone having a lobster and clam house party, would be glad to contribute or sing for my supper.
We do... but Quack Club is 1/2 hour away. Wish we were closer so we could host a seafood night for more. Friday night be Lobsta and chowda night. Hmm.. maybe steamers too.
^ ^ ^ ^ Lobster Steamers Chowder YUM! I get my lobster fix when I go every year! Which place has the best(besides Fawn's kitchen)? We've gone a lot to the place around the corner from Flo's. Is it called The Atlantic Grill? Usually have good lobster for a reasonable price.

We need to set up a Proboards meet up time and area once during the weekend. It would be great to meet the faces behind the names! Some of you I've had the pleasure of meeting but it would be fun to meet all.

Yeah that’d be cool. Might end up like every year, where everyone says they saw each other in passing, and didn’t say hi though. Lol.

Does anyone know what food you can and can’t bring into the fort. I know the list of stuff says you can bring a small cooler and drinks need to be factory sealed. But what about food-like would homemade muffins or bread be a problem or does food need to be in packages too.

I do like this idea though.
would love to meet some of you as well. The challenge is the timing without missing something. Here are some ideas:
For those of you in on Thursday night we could meet at a bar/restaurant somewhere near Newport Blues for those going to Shakey Graves. I think Matt mentioned the Red Parrot? We could all crash his dinner . Or just agree to wear something identifiable and introduce ourselves at the bar.
Once the festival starts we are all going to want to see different acts and/or race out of the last act to see our respective after shows. We could try to arrange meeting in the waiting area at 9:15 before the place gets too crowded but that will only work for those of us that are early risers.

They let anything as far as food goes in my experience. Not very strict. Also not strict about drinks being factory sealed.

We were just talking about the Wharf Pub. Tried going there last year but there was an hour wait. Might try that again this year... if not we’ll definitely end up at the Red Parrot.
Deer Tick was awesome last night and the documentary the night before was great as well. I was happy to see myself at the 10th anniversary show in Brooklyn. Both nights, they mentioned that they’re putting out a new album by the end of the year and they played a new song last night which was good.
Ravi Shavi last night was probably the highlight of my weekend though. I’d never heard/seen them despite knowing of them for years through Deer Tick. They put on a very fun show.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

Was that their new(er) song that’s up on Spotify? It has the Irish sounding flute.

Speaking of getting to the fest early, what’s the traffic situation like coming in at 11? What about 10? My first time actually driving into the fest (we’re close enough to bike and I was hoping to do that, but have no way to get our bikes to Newport... now if there was a bike rental service...)

I dunno but Tuyet gave me her setlist and the only code name I can’t figure out is “Hey! Yeah!” so I think that must have been the new one.

Going is fine as long as you get through the downtown traffic. Weather report worsening for Saturday AM, so keep your Newport app open for announcements.
Google maps better than a GPS for finding best routes on the fly. Getting out of the parking lot is usually a Stygian pit, so bring music and eats (and pee first), or tailgate until it lightens up. I have also been out in 10 minutes. Forgot whether departing is easier if you arrive early or late.
Found my notes. Yes, it is the Atlantic Grille near Flo's, open till 10 PM. Flo's does have a good raw bar upstairs, but closes at 9 PM. Easy parking for both.
Anthony's Seafood in Middletown is terrific (no reservations), but closes early at 8:30. Here's a twist. Hawaiian style (not seafood) at Flat Waves Food Shack. And that's what it is. A food shack. until 9 PM.
In Newport (if you have to park, picture a nice space in your head): Scales and Shells my fav (11 PM). Everyone here already seems to know about Red Parrot (11 PM). And The Mooring can be $$$, but right on the water, good drinks, and open late.

Fawn's open till dawn?
Great notes! And thanks again to everyone else too who has provided foodie tips.

Good to know! Plan to tailgate post fest except for the night we have aftershow tix. Although, it also depends on how much we want to get to the restaurants you mentioned above before they close.
And if I recall, coming in from the Jamestown Bridge is the worst route, right?

Are you thinking of the re-recorded version of Smith Hill they did for St Paddy's day?
