Biggest conflict: Brandi Carlisle and Langhorne Slim. Total Clusterf*: Nicole Atkins / Toots & The Maytals / Gary Clark,Jr. / Charlie Parr / Bermuda Triangle before I have to deal with the above conflict Decision Made: Have never seen a full Preservation hall performance, but War and Treaty look something special! Reason to Arrive Early: Low Cut Connie Acts that are Misplaced on Schedule: Low Cut Connie, Glen Hansard Can't Miss New Act for Me: Daniel Norgren I Miss: Would love to see Reignwolf invited back Worst Decision: Missing all of Friday. Lineup is stacked!
Need Help!:
-- I keep hearing about Khruangbin, and I get it, because this is 2018's version of the San Francisco sound circa 1968, massive reverb and all. Is there more that I am missing? -- Shakey Graves is must see, but is Beneath the Sacred Mountain really just performers covering the Byrds? -- The fabulous Jenny Lewis or Courtney Barnett, whose voice always makes me feel like she could care less. But I can't stop listening.
Still Bothered: Newport didn't honor its roots this year (I hope that doesn't mean Dawes is the surprise headliner). Gotta stop thinking that the old folksingers were about "trains" while today is a pool of poets. Trains are also about detachment, economic woes, working for nothing, no work, running from things we need to face, like Jim Crow. Bothersome that an icon like Arlo Guthrie wants to play, but doesn't get invited; that in five years I've never seen Baez, Collins, or Peter and Paul. Some like Joe Purdy and Charlie Barr carry the tradition, and maybe that's what matters. But no room at the inn, even as wandering minstrels, for Tom Paxton, Suzzy Roche, Christine Lavin. Just a small gripe, easily cured by Neil Young.
It blows my mind that they haven't booked Richard Thompson, whether solo or with band, in years. He's a favorite of so many performers who play NFF often. Jeff Tweedy produced his last album, Elvis Costello has covered his songs, he opened a bunch of Isbell dates early this year, Dawes raves about him and performed with him on one of those Americana cruises, and he opened around half of that Dylan/Wilco/MMJ tour around five years ago.
The best show I ever saw him do, out of around 40, was recorded a night or two before this Providence date. If your tastes align with an average NFF lineup, you'll almost certainly dig Richard Thompson.
(I don't know whether this was the most recent time he played Newport, but he did play the festival solo in '89 or '90. It was before the Newport reboot when they started booking a lot of rock and other genres, but he's someone who could easily fit into any NFF lineup on any day.)
Ughhhh. I know there is a week to go, and Newport is its own ecosystem, but weather, especially Sunday, could be buckets. Worse: If we get a thunderstorm, and we have to empty out, does the new security mean the day is done?
Sunday is only showing as 40% right now. Also too early to get worried. This forecast has already changed so much.
A week before this year's Boston Calling, the forecasts predicted great weather -- not too hot, not too cold, no rain.
Yep! Open til dawn. At which point the bacon and blueberry pancakes come out. 18 peeps, 4 days, 20 lbs of bacon, and nary a leftover will there be. Can't tell you how many times I've gotten up at farm girl time to find a few of Quack Club still (did someone say Still? i think i need a drink) up, drank'in, and hot tubbing. Though you can skip the bib. All the lobsta's at QC are shucked and served ala saute with the most intense mac + cheese courtesy of M+C. Don't even know their real names anymore. Just Mac, and Cheese. LOL
180 jello shots completed tonight. The new 'Bahama Mama having Sex on the Beach' came out Fabulous.
k2b - if you drive in, get there by 10 latest so you are in the lower lots and not on the dreaded hill. Lower lots if you are not shy = out in 10 minutes or less. If any want (that are not staying downtown) an avoid-the-traffic route happy to provide.
fawnmart - didn’t the van usually get in later than 10? I don’t recall too much of a problem; and the hill made for nice sunsets while waiting to leave!
I think I remember your quicker route in and I may try that.
Someone on Reddit is claiming Warren (I assume Haynes) may be joining Nels Cline on Sunday.

Don't exactly know what you are talking about, but totally jealous and flashing back to the 70's when we might do all the above -- and raise a barn -- then jam till dawn to earn your pancakes. Have a blast!
It was in the email I got from them it said string section and a few surprises
Email from Lucius? Or Fest?
Wait. Isn't Lucius usually one of the (finger quotes) "surprise guests"? How trippy would it be if the dopplegangers of Lucius backed Lucius. Newport week does this to me.
We need to set up a Proboards meet up time and area once during the weekend. It would be great to meet the faces behind the names! Some of you I've had the pleasure of meeting but it would be fun to meet all.
Yeah that’d be cool. Might end up like every year, where everyone says they saw each other in passing, and didn’t say hi though. Lol.
I do like this idea though.
I'm sure I'll see you Thursday at the Cafe as seems to be tradition now.

I’ll take Roger Waters please (since I haven’t attended since Roger headlined); how cool would that be if Roger becomes one of the folk and pops up every year now?
As for doppelgängers, the Seaweed Sisters are opening for them on their upcoming tour that Newport falls in. Not necessarily a doppelgänger, but interesting...

I think it helps at Newport that there's the standing room only pit, so that everybody who just wants to lounge/socialize in their chairs can do so without bothering others.

I was at that show and it really wasn’t bad after the first few songs. We were talking about what a good job Neil did settling the crowd and we’re pretty surprised to see his comments after. People on the boards had been complaining about fans the whole tour so maybe it just caught up to Neil that night.

When I saw him on the exact same type of tour in 2014 at the same place he just played in Boston, the crowd was bloody awful.
People absolutely SCREAMING requests after every song, even while Neil was trying to tell stories. Other people being stupid with their phones, other people freaking out over how stupid the other other people were being with their phones.
This Friday clusterfuck is probably my hardest schedule call right now.
No doubt both Margo and Lucius are gonna pull out all the stops for their Fort stage debuts.
Wish I had tickets to Glorietta's aftershows so I could miss them during the day and not feel too bad. I've loved all their songs and Heatstroke has become one of my songs of the summer. I might settle for getting the full experience when they come to NYC in October.
Moses Sumney might hit the chopping block. Love him, and haven't seen him since his album came out, but I feel like his show will suffer the most being outdoors in daylight. Maybe I'm wrong though?

I still haven't seen Moses, so I am planning on seeing that full set. I've seen Margo a couple of times, so I think I'm going to pass on her, even though I totally agree she is going to bring it on the Fort stage. After hearing about Lucius with the string section, I think I will have to pass on Glorietta too to check that out. Friday is too stacked

Seems no matter where I park, its a wait. So the lower lots (further in) get out first?
Alternate routes? We discovered Year One that the biggest headache from Middletown is America's Cup Avenue. Are you referring to Valley Road, then crossing Easton Bay? (Of course, now that's where the traffic will be) If you have an even better idea, suggestions welcome here or via message. Thanks!

That Sturgill -> Wood Brothers -> St. Vincent -> Isbell run is great but I can't decide between seeing all of a set or trying to catch a few songs from each. I've seen the Wood Brothers a bunch but not in a while. And I'm interested to see St Vincent's set because I imagine it'll be way different from her other tour sets.
