thanks for sending this!! I miss this old layout and don't understand why they moved away from it. I created my own pocket-sized schedule for this year.
Might lock myself out of inforoo until Sunday night. No idea if it will leak, but really wanna go into the weekend with all of my current knowledge of who I'm gonna see and no other leaks of who might be there or who the Sat headliner is.
so I heard from my manager at work, who attends the festival every year for a day or two, is there are rumblings that Mumford and Sons are doing a surprise secret set on Saturday. I guess her husband's sister works at some hotel in the area and sees the band in the hotel multiple times a day. According to their Instagram the band IS in the states, at the very least NYC. This was the first I heard about it tho and tried to look it up but couldn't find much else. Just passing along what I've been hearing.
But god if it's true I'm gonna jump off a cliff lol
I would be pumped if that was true! Been wanting them for a while now.
If it’s them, it’ll probably leak. Because those guys are always all over IG doing live videos.

I love how you tagged him in a response where he was saying he didn't wanna know anything. haha

Oh no yea I knew what I was doing lol I know M&S aren't the *most* loved band on here so I figured 'hey for those who DO want to know...'
1) I love Mumford and have been wanting them to headline Newport for many years. I’ve always thought they “got it” and even though are too big (and have turned down offers in previous years), would be willing to make it work in the right year.
2) But Newport tamed my excitement by making them unannounced (if it’s them). No matter how much I want to see Mumford, they’re not Bruce or Neil. And anything less than Bruce or Neil, especially when it’s a common band like Mumford, is disappointing.
I’ve been under the impression that it wouldn’t be Mumford because it would require a trip across the sea (even though they have no conflicts); seems too expensive for a band that is already too expensive. But I guess if they’re already in the states...!
Also, the last time I saw Mumford was in an arena. I paid a premium for prime seats only to be surrounded by a bunch of drunk bros (male and female) who were chatting through the slow songs, would record the popular songs and replay the video at full volume during the quieter stuff, and poured beer all over us.
Point being... I want to see Mumford in a better environment. Newport would work!
Yeah, according to IG. They were in NY 5 days ago, and posted the guitars pic yesterday...I guess the least that can be taken is that they are in NY with gear, and no shows are listed on website.

Drunk bros I can handle, I’ll just spill beer right back on them. Neo nazis they get the two thumbs down.
Edit: sorry totally out of reference I know. I was just downloading the Phish sets from over the weekend and read about them showing up there.

Would love M&S only because I’ve never seen them. Last album was dreadful but the first two were great... could see some New Basement Tapes songs as well with Brittany Howard being in newport... Taylor being there would make sense due to the sneaky look MLV gave on instagram about Middle Brother playing. Is Elvis Costello available?
Does Mumford have connections to anybody else on the lineup? Passenger? Glen Hansard? Cambridge Folk Festival? Crosby? Any Communion Bands or other Ben Lovett connections on the lineup? Did Jay Sweet only book Justin Timberlake at Pilgrimage because of his Inside Llewyn Davis/Mumford connection? The theories and questions are endless.
It’s still Neil in my heart but now my brain is leaning towards Mumford.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

It’s Rhiannon Giddens not Brittany. I already looked up Rhiannon, and she is booked somewhere Saturday.

Oh yeah... I must have been thinking of their Gentlemen of the Road Festivals they were doing... Alabama Shakes played a couple of those last year so that connection would make sense.

Hey, @strawman. I remember you making a comment last year about Dawes. I think you had seen them at a show, and they said they wouldn’t be at Newport in 17...but they would be in 18. If they aren’t booked this year, I would wonder what happened there.

Feels really strange not having anybody from MMJ, Dawes, or The Decemberists on the lineup.

Really hoping you're on to something with the New Basement Tapes idea... would love to see that as a supergroup set for Saturday headliner (if we can't get Bruce or Neil). Looks like everyone but Rhiannon Giddens is available...

Had the pleasure of seeing Rhiannon in June at Clearwater Hudson River Revival. Before her main stage set, she was in a small tent, playing some acoustic and singing acapella while giving an informal talk about the cultural threads music weaves in our society, arguments about so-called music appropriation, and her interest in Celtic music. Absolutely brilliant, talented, and beautiful in every way. They could book her at Newport --stage and museuum -- every year as far as I'm concerned.
Speaking of the Mumfords in NYC. Isn't First Aid Kit also hanging around in the states right now?
