I saw something like "bag village" or whatever on the map. Is that a bag check/locker type of place? I can't remember if they discussed it when talking new security stuff. I'd love to bring a small bag in but check it so I don't need to carry all day
Finally listened to Jay on All Songs Considered and came away with:
1. Jay was all smiles in voice about Saturday evening. Yes, if you are about the headliner, Newport is not for you. That doesn't mean the headliner is not a true headliner. Why no announcement? He hinted at two possible reasons -- someone or a group who does not want to be tied to ticket sales and asked not to be announced; and / or they are taking a major fee cut, perhaps even donating their fee. 2. I thought A Change is Gonna Come is about politics of the moment, but its about "civil rights" (his words) and the blues with Batiste and the Dap Kings as the house band. 3. So now I am convinced we are looking at some combo of Mavis Staples, Gary Clark, Jr., Leon Bridges, Lucinda Williams, Buddy Guy, Rhiannon Gidddens, Alynda Segarra (the Riff Raff in NY that weekend), and anyone's guess.
I don’t dislike Mumford but let’s not start calling them bluegrass. They might be bonnaroo bluegrass but they sure aren’t Newport bluegrass
I agree with you that at best they are (or were) bluegrass-lite. But to be fair, in recent years, even Newport has avoided real bluegrass. I wouldn’t put Mumford too far from Trampled by Turtles, Old Crow, and Avett brothers... all bands that Newport likes to book. Newport hasn’t even dabbled in jamgrass too much, with the exception of Dusters (with Ryan Adams). Del is about it in terms of non-museum stage, legit bluegrass (maybe Nickel Creek? But that’s more pop bluegrass). Hell, with the Bluegrass Sitch stage, I’d say Bonnaroo has booked more real bluegrass in recent years.
I would love to see some jamgrass at newport, something like Greensky Bluegrass would be awesome!

I believe they announced there will be the option to check bags first come first served, with not nearly enough room for everyone's bags. I am hoping to do the same.
So has anyone figure out what the fuck they're doing for Friday? After Margo Price>Glorietta I am pretty lost. I want to see everyone, so I might just bounce around even though I usually hate doing that. I've seen Ben Harper and LSD, but never these iterations of them. Never seen Sturgill, The Wood Brothers, St. Vincent, or Jason Isbell.

Cool, I figured something like that. I've got a small drawstring bag that I'll have a sweatshirt and some other random junk in that I wouldn't mind carrying but would prefer storing.

I think my plan's looking something like:
half of Darlingside > Fantastic Negrito > hop around for Courtney/Sidi/Amanda/TITK/Erika > all of Margo > almost all of Glorietta > Lucius until they finish > maybe part of Ben/Charlie > Sturgill > most or all of St. Vincent > Isbell

Still not sure if I'm catching a bit of all them or sticking for a full set or two. I've seen them all but not enough times.

I'd prefer not to bounce around either. Potentially doing full sets for Courtney Marie, Tyler Childers, and Moses Sumney. Maybe catch partial sets of all of the acts from Lucius to St. Vincent, and then the full Isbell set. I have seen Sturgill a few times, so I may pass on him if I'm really digging the Ben Harper set. That's gonna be a great day, really looking forward to Wood Bros and St. Vincent too
Would love M&S only because I’ve never seen them. Last album was dreadful but the first two were great... could see some New Basement Tapes songs as well with Brittany Howard being in newport... Taylor being there would make sense due to the sneaky look MLV gave on instagram about Middle Brother playing. Is Elvis Costello available?
Does Mumford have connections to anybody else on the lineup? Passenger? Glen Hansard? Cambridge Folk Festival? Crosby? Any Communion Bands or other Ben Lovett connections on the lineup? Did Jay Sweet only book Justin Timberlake at Pilgrimage because of his Inside Llewyn Davis/Mumford connection? The theories and questions are endless.
It’s still Neil in my heart but now my brain is leaning towards Mumford.
Really hoping you're on to something with the New Basement Tapes idea... would love to see that as a supergroup set for Saturday headliner (if we can't get Bruce or Neil). Looks like everyone but Rhiannon Giddens is available...
Elvis is recovering from cancer surgery. Everything went well and he's expected to make a full recovery and move forward with his fall tour, but he did recently cancel a handful of dates.
I suppose that it's the travel -- I read a few years ago that he and his family live in his wife's hometown of Vancouver, BC -- that might make this difficult, rather than singing a few songs within a set.
This is awesome news... which just makes that late-day Newport sequence on Saturday more of a crapshoot for me. I love Jenny Lewis, but have seen her more than a half dozen times in recent years. One time, I even got to chatting with Johnny before a sold-out show and he was nice enough to add me to the guest list.
But in all those times, I have not seen her play with The Watson Twins. Would love that.
That said, I’d totally be down for a career spanning Jenny Lewis headlining set at some point. Reunite Rilo Kiley for a bunch of songs. Then with the Watson Twins. Some Jenny Lewis solo. A few songs off of Jenny and Johnny. Some stuff from Nice as F**k. And then, bring out Rostam for their song together.
I have no concept of how popular RK was because I was in LA during their popularity and they were the biggest local band in the scene. I saw them play 20+ times in a few years and it was fantastic. Not sure what their East Coast draw is, though. When they reunite (It's going to happen, I know it), you can bet I'll be taking a few weeks off work and following them around. Still my fav band of all time.
More Adventurous is rock and roll songwriting at its best, and Under The Blacklight is a pretty good album, too. (I haven't heard the earlier albums).
I've been lukewarm on everything JL has done since, in part, because I think this stuff is so much better.
I was late to the dance on Rilo Kiley and got into them not long before they broke up. They played Boston on their last tour, but I went to see Nick Lowe that night instead.
That was a bad move for me because I had seen Nick Lowe around 10 times by then and had never seen Rilo Kiley.
I saw Jenny Lewis at Boston Calling in Spring 2014. It was fine, but it wasn't Rilo Kiley.
I'm always so ambivalent about seeing performers whose more recent output leaves me cold, yet I feel strongly connected to their earlier work. #Dawes

Can someone point me in the direction of the Brooklyn Nine-Nine gif that had the Newport mention? Too lazy to sift through the threads... need for my group email chain lol.

I've been patiently in the lyte line since may, but starting to doubt the chances. If anyone has 2 spares to Glorietta on friday or saturday, please take pity on me
Giving this a try, have not tried to share a google map before. link Burma Rd is the jam compared to 114 or 138 if coming in from the east bay. Usually nearly deserted even at NFF time and visually pleasing. The 'leap frog' across Bellevue is 'entertaining'.. At the end where Wickham and Brenton meet at Harrison, if no traffic stay on Harrison. If it's backed up, run Beacon Hill all the way around to the fort entrance. It's a really enjoyable go-round compared to sitting bumper to bumper. The map says 47 minutes from Portsmouth, we usually run the route in about 40 mins from Warren while being respectful of speed in the neighborhoods.
@wakefield... come off of the bridge and head to Admiral Kalbfus rd, and then do the back roads. Do not go down to America's cup unless you want to spend a lot of time looking at downtown Newport. Best left for the night time walk-about.
Arrive before 10am , minimal traffic, great parking for easy out. (And because we have all been talking about it, we are moving up our arrival time. LOL) Hope the link works. Happy NFF all!!!

Desperate plea here for two Friday kids tickets. After many months I am getting closer in the Lyte line, but I am starting to think it's not going to happen.
We're driving south from Maine towards the festival today. If you can help please text: Four three four-825-5178. Thanks!
fulfilled a life long dream making it to Newport last year all the way from Adelaide, Australia....an experience my family and I will never forgot, my favourite and most enjoyable musical experience...
unfortunately making it back this year was beyond us.... just wanted to wish everyone a fabulous Newport this weekend
my challenge has been set and I'm determined to make it back next year, and promised to take my dad who brought me up on Folk with me.... so see you in 2019
