As end of year lists start to come out, here are my top 5 Newport artists that I think absolutely have to be there based on their albums released this year (or at least singles):
Margo Price - American Made
Brandi Carlisle - The Joke/The Mother - Single just released that is great
Jason Isbell and the Nashville Unit - The Nashville Sound
Langhorne Slim - Life is Confusing
Courtney Barnett/Kurt Vile - Lotta Sea Lice
Will be disappointing if any of them aren't there and/or have to choose among them due to conflicts. Though, said disappointment is inevitable.
Coincidentally all of these artists except Kurt Vile played in 2015, 4 of them on one day, 3 of them on the same stage.

I really want to see Tyler Childers at the fort. I missed out on tickets to his show at the Sinclair in Cambridge. Probably my favorite country album of the year.
For anyone interested, MC Taylor wrote some thoughts on Grandma's Hands Band in his 2017 Wrap-Up:
"The whole idea about the Grandma's Hands Band—which is a Bill Withers tribute band that I'm a member of—came about through a brief exchange on Instagram with Jay Sweet, who is the Executive Producer of the Newport Folk Festival. We were having to do everything on the sly because of some radius clause issues we had with some other summer festivals we played, but we came up with the idea of putting together a secret Bill Withers group with was essentially Hiss with our pal Justin Vernon also playing guitar. At the last minute, we had Alynda Segarra, Heather McEntire, Patterson Hood, and Natalie Prass sing with us too. We had about four hours of rehearsal the day before the performance, and it probably shouldn't have been as good as it was. But Bill Withers' songs are so powerful that it's hard to mess them up. The spirit of them is so rock solid that I think the only way you could destroy them is if you went onstage and sang them with a black and evil heart. But that's not us."
Interesting that he says "is" a tribute band instead of "was." I have a feeling they'll bring it back and my guess would be for Eaux Claires

Not impossible for crossover just don’t remember much of it the last few years except frank turner and I’m not even sure that was the same summer just thought it was a place to potentially rule out some names
Newport often has crossover with the Xponential Music Festival in NJ that weekend. They have The War On Drugs, Sturgill Simpson And Preservation Hall Jazz Band playing that weekend. I'd love to see The War On Drugs at Newport and Sturgill graduates to the main stage.
On the subject of Bingo. I would like to propose a collective tracking endeavor with anyone on this board that wants to help. A sort of wiki-sheet for potential Newport Folk artists. I have a love for the statistical predictions involved in fantasy sports and decided that the same type of forecasting could be used to try and create a killer Bingo card. Now that they have been submitted, I thought I would open it up to the collective knowledge of the great folks on this message board so that we could track who the possible artists would be. This is still very rudimentary and I didn't really design it for public consumption so there is definitely room for improvement. There is also a lot I don't know as my love for this space is only three years old and some of you have been around for a lot longer and/or seem to have a lot more time to go to concerts. (Hoping my kids are soon old enough that there is less a need for a babysitter and more of a co-concert goer!)
So far, I have added all the artists that played Newport in the last five years, most of the folks that have been mentioned on this message board, artists that made some top ten lists, and others that have hit my radar. My bingo card was based on the top 48 that rose to the top on this list, but it has changed since I submitted it.
Figure this is a good time to post it as people have extra time on their hands this week.
Columns B-F is a tracking of when an artist has played Newport in the past, with Column G being a total score. I gave a whole point for being a main artist and a half point for museum stage/aftershow appearances. Columns H-K have self-explanatory headers, the total eligible points is in parentheses after the headers. Some judgement was made on allocating points up to the max allowed. For example, if someone has played Newport, then they are part of the family, but some people are more part of the family than others. Columns L-M are tracking whether they have a connection with All Songs Considered as I think Bob Boilen and Jay Sweet use each other for finding artists and the top 10 end of year lists seem like a great place to find potential artists. Colum O-P are tracking availability which we still don't have a lot of information on, but should fill in as we get closer Column Q is extra points for being on Dualtone or Third Man records as each one sends a couple of artists each year. If you have other labels that should be included, please let me know and/or add. Column S is just extra points which require some sort of justification in notes. And, most importantly, Column T is the total and they are sorted by it.

I think Deer Tick 2014 should be a 1 since the played a full set on the main stage that year. Also, they call their aftershows "Annual" so I think it's safe to assume they'll be in the area and available but that's a little bit more of a stretch... I suppose they could end any year.
This is really cool and I hope you win Bingo after putting in all of this work. I've only made it down as far as Deer Tick... can't wait to dive into it some more.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher
Happy New Year. Not too long until the announcements start rolling. Can't wait. I keep not getting around to entering bingo. Oh well. Maybe next year. Based on Xponential, New Albums etc I'd probably have added some of these. Note: Other than Xponential I didn't look up their tour dates to confirm:
Bon Iver (Sounds like Justin is a fan now and might want to do a full set) Iron and Wine (Been long enough) First Aid Kit (New album. Been a while) The War On Drugs (@ Xponential so they're nearby) Arcade Fire (Jay was there when they played NY subway plus there's the Presentation Hall connection to the band plus one of the Presentation Hall guys is on the Newport committee plus Presentation Hall are @ Xponential) Sturgill Simpson (Newport got him when he wasn't as big so maybe its time for the main stage plus he's @ Xponential) Bob Dylan ( Hey if Bob feels like it ) The National ( Because I want to see them) Bruce Springsteen (Because I have tickets to see him on Broadway in June and if by some miracle i get to meet him I will convince him to play newport) Eddie Vedder and Glen Hansard (Because they're good buds, Glen loves Neport and Eddie met George Wein a few years back at the Jazz fest. Something will come of that meeting eventually) Hozier (Loves the fest although no new album so probably not) Mark Demarco (Was great at Boston calling. Might be good fit. Not sure) Ok so that list was a bit headliner heavy. Just throwing it out there to see what sticks. What are other people's ideas?
