For what it's worth, Grizzly Bear were booked to play this, but had to drop out.
Ugh, really? They’d be at the top of my list of bands I’d love to see at NFF. I have been leaving them out of consideration as of late because their latest albums have moved away from folk.

Matt Vasquez just "liked" the Newport Folk facebook page. Not exactly a surprise but I'm guessing that means he'll be back this year in some form or another (solo, delta spirit, guest spots, whatever)

Boston Calling have a descent enough lineup including The Killers, Jack White, Fleet Foxes and The Decemberists etc. Pretty cool. I only went on the Friday last year. It was awful. The Bon Iver crowd were drunk and rowdy plus it poured rain. Seems they've placed it between a lot of big colleges so get a lot of drunk students. A lot of people were very annoyed at the hour plus delays just getting in. I heard it got better as the weekend went on. Hopefully just new location growing pains. It has potential. Mac Demarco and Sylvan Esso were great.

Agreed. It was a great lineup, and there were some great sets, but I have no desire to return. A lot of the logistical flaws will be ironed out over time, but the crowd won't be. I've never seen more talking at a festival. There were several sets I could barely hear, even from decent spots. It reeeallly made me appreciate Newport crowds that much more.

I feel like I had a completely different Boston Calling experience than most. I thought it was well set up. I showed up at the start and barely had to wait to get in. I pretty much never waited in long lines. If you went to the right bathroom area it was a breeze, food and drink lines were fast. It is definitely a drunker crowd than Newport, but that is part of a festival like that. I didn't have problems hearing anything. Comparing Newport and Boston Calling is tough in general.
Just listened to the new They Might Be Giants song and see that they are touring this Spring. They seem like they would be a great main stage act. Would love to see them there.

Another year, another failure at creating a bingo card.
This isn't really a prediction, more of a wish. With the constant drumbeat of awful stories about men in entertainment and the #metoo movement, I'd love it if this year was the year of women. I've joked for a while that "fuzzy, female fronted indie rock" is my favorite "genre" but I think there's a lot of great bands out there some who should be back, some I think would be first timers. Ideas: (Returning) Lady Lamb Julien Baker Courtney Barnett Lucius (it's been so long since they were on the actual list!) Jenny Lewis Margo Price (a lock) (New) Hop Along Alvvays Laura Stevenson Haim Yeah Yeah Yeahs (GovBall means no pano right? I think they're in play) Stevie Nicks (as this year's legacy headliner/Goddess from whom all the rest of these bands flow)
Thoughts? Other folks who would fit on my ever growing Spotify playlist?
(No Exclusion of men either: Excited to see Gaslight is playing the good one. They were associated with Hold Steady who I'd love to see at the fort/a deer tick after show. I think Jack White makes an appearance. Todd Snider is overdue.)
My son and I have been going for three years. We started going when he was ten. "Fuzzy, female fronted indie rock" has been his favorite genre each year. In 2015 it was Courtney Barnett, in 2016 it was Lady Lamb and in 2017 it was Margaret Glaspy. Each became the act he most want to see that year. He even got to meet and chat with Lady Lamb. Made his day!

Speaking of this genre, has Waxahatchee played this fest?
And just in case someone from NFF browses this board, let me put in another request for Hop Along.

Love this! I knew I wasn't alone. I feel like this genre needs a name but I haven't been clever enough to come up with one.
Lady Lamb positively slayed in 2016, one of the few times I've gone out of my way to be up close.

Waxahatchee (autocorrect: wax antacids) hasn't played while I've been there, and I haven't done a deep dive in her music yet either so thanks for the suggestion!
Speaking of "has X played" does anyone have a good resource for past lineups? I remember in 2014 you could get them by adding a /year to the end of the lineup page on the site but that hasn't been the case for a long time. Googling for posters usually fails me. Is Jay doing this on purpose to keep it from being one more thing that raises expectations?

This Lady Lamb set was possibly my favorite thing from 2016. So beautiful and full of emotion. I'd LOVE to see her there again.
Now to figure out which overlaps will actually happen. Doubtful that they all will be coming.
Sturgill TWoD Pres Hall (Confirmed)(Sunday Groove) Byrne Sylvan
This puts a damper on my Sylvan Esso hopes. They would play on 8 consecutive nights if they played the Sunday of Newport. Hopefully, they will stop by in some fashion since they will be in the area.
