Saw The Devil Makes Three on Tuesday. They've added a fiddle player and a drummer. Definitely had a much more melodic sound to them than the handful of times I've seen them in the past.
They added them a couple years ago it definitely fills out the sound when they play some larger rooms. Spencer is a pretty good fiddle player he’s also played with deer tick

Strange, it must be an intermittent thing for them because the last couple of times I've seen them prior to this they were just the original trio.

Felice brothers popping up on some lineups leads me to think they will return here after missing it a few times.
Unfortunately the band has changed and two of the original members left. Now it's just Ian and James (the actual brothers) and a new base player and semi-new drummer.
Still put on a good show but they are working out the kinks currently
Newport mentioning Joplin (50 years) today, makes me hope for a Joplin Tribute! That’d be awesome!
I would love to see this! Imagine if they did a tribute set with guests like Kris Kristofferson (who dated Janis and wrote “Me and Bobby McGee”), Mavis Staples, Florence Welch, Lucius and Deer Tick

This reminds me: Florence is always welcome to headline. I would be very happy if someone made this happen somehow, some year.

Their only upcoming date is Melt in Germany 2 weeks before Newport, so this could be a possibility.

Arcade Fire Andrew Bird Joanna Newsom Conor Oberst (or MoF) Charles Bradley Langhorne Slim Lady Lamb Leon Bridges Jeff Mangum (or NMH) Pixies Talest Man on Earth
I don't honestly know if any of them are putting music out next year, though some did in the last year. I just really wanna see these acts.
A Jeff Mangum set would be something special.
If I remember correctly, in an AMA or through a Twitter response, Jay mentioned that he really tried to book NMH but just could not get their reunion tour to line up in a way that worked for them to be at NFF. (This was several years back when they were on tour)

Hop Along and Middle Kids back to back on the Quad would be A+
This post made me listen to Middle Kids for the first time and I am really glad I did. Now I too want this to happen.
I was thinking they'd be a shoe-in for Boston Calling and when they didn't show up on the lineup I got excited that it might mean they're playing Newport instead

Saturday: Old Crow Medicine Show Vance Joy Ani Difranco First Aid Kit Special Unannounced Guest (Taylor Swift - short set early in the day) I’m With Her
Sunday: James Taylor Sturgill Simpson Josh Ritter Preservation Hall Jazz Band Hop Along Bermuda Triangle
I think this is wonderful and realistic. My only edit would be move James Taylor to Saturday and have Arcade Fire close out Sunday.

James Taylor is limited to Friday or Sunday. Sunday seems more likely if he was to play as he’ll be in DC on Thursday and Philly on Saturday (and a friday show would result in 5 straight shows).
Ideally, I thought Sturgill and Old Crow would be a fantastic 1-2 on a day but Sturgill is limited to Friday and Sunday. I could have moved their night to Friday, but Friday often tends to be more indie. War on Drugs is also limited to Friday and Sunday and if I moved Bon Iver to saturday I would lose The War on Drugs as the sub headliner on the “indie” day.
I’m also missing what I think are one or two highly billed Quad Stage closers. I could definitely see Ani in that role on one night (with her newly announced set at Nelsonville, it shows she’s touring this summer, open to festivals, and there’s often some overlap between these two fests). I guess on my current mock up, Josh Ritter could serve that role on Sunday. But need something for Friday that would stand against the indie-folk on the main stage.
