I could see it going either way. Most likely yes, but potentially no. I’ll wait for an outside publication to refer to him as a headliner.
Just fyi, publications won't know whether he's a headliner or not. Newport doesn't announce that to them either.
And interestingly, this year it looks as though they're not even ordering artists by billing on the website. Sturgill's underneath Fantastic Negrito on the By Day page, so it's either alphabetical or by announcement order
Agreed that it could go either way
I seem to remember being tipped off before by publications after having similar debates (Flight of the Conchords, Mavis Staples, and Old Crow come to mind). And then we debate whether the publication used the word “headliner” correctly.

They probably just guessed
Or when reaching out to the band for confirmation before writing the story, the band could have told them.
He’s headlining forecastle, I’m assuming Newport will be the same
Was he a late addition? Stapleton is, but Sturgill is not on the lineup. Sturgill was last year, but was billed after LCD (and that’s even getting a home state bump).
Not to argue that he can’t headline Newport (smaller headliners than Forecastle usually), but it’s less obvious from Forecastle billing.

Their headliners are usually comparable. The top 3 of Forecastle 2016 were Avetts, Alabama Shakes, and Ryan Adams
Ben Howard was just added to Mad Cool, it's likely he's only playing that (his only scheduled show at the moment) because of the proximity to his UK location, but would love to finally get him to Rhode Island.
He's another one whose shows people just cannot shut the fuck up at.
Ben Howard's two albums are so different from each other, that all the fans of the first don't know how to react to his more serious fare. I'm hoping that his third album will be similar to I Forget Where We Were and that all the misbehavers just stay home.
Also, he played Radio City Music Hall on his last tour, so he could arguably headline Newport.

Two thumbs up for dark Ben Howard.
The first time I saw him someone requested "Call Me Maybe" and he politely told them to shut the fuck up.

Just a reminder that the Avett Brothers didn't headline last year.
Say for instance someone like Paul Simon or Arcade Fire wanted to play but could only do Friday, Sturgill would not be a headliner.
There are no safe bets
Yeah I think it just matters year to year on who says yes. If you have stronger headliners one year someone like Sturgill is a Sub-HL. Just so happy he'll be back. Today's announcement got me so excited I pulled the trigger on him and John Prine at RCMH.

Matt Vasquez announced an EP release, album in 2019, and US Tour dates:
Delta Spirit frontman Matthew Logan Vasquez has announced he’ll be releasing a new EP this Spring, titled Texas Murder Ballads. The upcoming EP serves as a teaser for his third studio album MLVIII, slated for release in 2019. According to a press release, these new songs were inspired by Matthew’s hometown of Austin, Texas, and was recorded over 28 days at his family home, before his recent move to Norway. Matthew said this about the album’s conception:
Austin is where I discovered music, and I’ve been so fortunate to return home as an adult to be plugged in to the best music scene on the planet. Writing this record and knowing that I was leaving all that behind for a new adventure was painful as hell.
Matthew will be debuting the EP on tour across North America later this year, which includes support from T. Hardy Morris, Desert Noises and Mail the Horse. He’ll be making a stop at NYC’s Rough Trade on May 11. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (2/9) at noon with an AmEx presale starting today (2/7) at noon. All dates are listed below.
Matthew released his second LP Does What He Wants last year. You can revisit the videos for “Red Fish” and “Fires Down in Mexico” below.

Also, why do all my posts say Save Save at the end? ugh. I'm not usually technologically inept.

Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
Saw this weeks ago and tweeted buddy about it. No response. 50 years this year
Seems pretty likely to me!
I said the same thing last year after Arlo Guthrie got announced at the Stadium in Woonsocket. I'm worried he does something like the Stadium or Twin River or the South Shore tent and skips NFF.
Buddy Guy has been on my list of acts to check out for a long time. Ever since my blues phase back in like 2008. I somehow keep putting it off. Would be great to see him close the Quad in a blues tent day.
