I said the same thing last year after Arlo Guthrie got announced at the Stadium in Woonsocket. I'm worried he does something like the Stadium or Twin River or the South Shore tent and skips NFF.
Buddy Guy has been on my list of acts to check out for a long time. Ever since my blues phase back in like 2008. I somehow keep putting it off. Would be great to see him close the Quad in a blues tent day.
I’d love to see Buddy at the Fort. He’s not to be missed, I recommend seeing him at least once!
I saw Buddy back in 2009 or so with B.B. King and it was amazing! Quinn Sullivan was with him that night too, and my jaw dropped when Quinn (around 12 at the time) went toe-to-toe in a guitar solo battle with Buddy. My wife caught Buddy’s guitar pick and I still have it to this day
Saw this weeks ago and tweeted buddy about it. No response. 50 years this year
Caught Buddy a little over a year ago. Just give him a stool and a little break, and he still brings it. Maybe bring it to NFF?
Not sure where you saw him on a stool. But both times I saw him, he was in the crowd slaying better than any band that’s been mentioned in this thread...he brings it!
Perhaps I am not as hard core indie folk / country, but a wee underwhelmed by the first three announcements.
With the possible exception of Sturgill Simpson, is there really a headliner here?
Am I a pooh pah?
I'd give them another week before really making any judgements.
Last year's the first time I think they ever led the rollout with a headliner, and that was followed up by 3 smaller artists. In 2016 it took until the last 2 announcements to get 2 of the headliners.
Basically, it's a bit of a crapshoot if you're waiting for "big names". Which is part of the philosophy behind the whole rolling lineup

The rolling lineup has barely started! It ain't even about the lineup for most people. It's about learning about new and up coming bands and singers who may be huge in a few years. Today's announcement is now headliner material but in 2015 he wasn't as big and played the smaller Quad stage. Even if the lineup was finished here's a list of some of the artists who played last year who weren't even on the final lineup: Nathaniel Rateliff, Margo Price, Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, Shakey Graves, Deer Tick, MMJ drummer Patrick Hallahan, Sharon Van Etten, Lucius, Rayland Baxter, Kam Franklin of The Suffers, and Roger Waters.

Courtney and Sturgill we're good adds for me as I'm a fan of both. Fantastic Negrito and Weather Station are both lease known to me, but I've heard and read great things.
One thing I know about Newport, though, is when you think the lineup is looking good they still throw surprises and big sets at us. So while you may be underwhelmed now let's hope a few more adds start to satisfy your tastes and then some unique shows get dropped.

Folks have me wrong. I really dig Sturgill and like what I've heard of Fantastic Negrito. And ya, NFF is the first time I ever heard The Oh Hellos, and Lake Street Dive, and Trombone Shorty, and Brandi Carlisl, etc, etc. And seeing Courtney Barnett here reminds me of the great 2015 fest --the first I attended.
I just seem to recall (and memory fades) a real barn burner the first week. Could be wrong. Was already a fan of St. Paul and the Broken Bones so that early announcement just excited me. This is a good show already. We just throw around so many fantasy guests that opening the package is sometimes initially a let down.
Interesting -- Seeger's Clearwater fest often interchanges acts on alternate years with Newport. This year's initial announcements include Jeff Tweedy, Rhiannon Giddens, The Mavericks, Ani DiFranco, Choir! Choir! Choir! Wouldn't be surprised to see some of last year's acts at NFF: Arlo, Joan Osborne's Dylan Band, Valerie June.

I share a similar sentiment (and I do like indie folk, a lot).
Don’t get me wrong, I am happy Courtney and Sturgill are on the bill (and Fantastic Negrito seems like he’d be a great show). But neither would have made me rush to buy tickets (if I didn’t need to rush to buy tickets to avoid a sell out).
I’m starting to wonder if I’m becoming a cranky old man. Newport has now been in its revival phase for about 7 or so years. My sentiment for both of those announcements was that “they’ve played before.” But I feel like we’re getting to the point where this will be the case for most artists on the bill.
Also, I’m starting to wonder if the folk rock revival of the late 00s and early 10s is finally starting to wane. There aren’t as many bands moving up the charts and getting rave reviews (like the Lord Hurons and Lone Bellows of the past) coming out of the scene. Or maybe I’m just more disconnected.
Not to poo poo on the party. As I said, I see a solid foundation for the lineup. I just need some fresh hyped talent (not sure who this may be... Pinegrove and Whitney met this on last year’s lineup. Hop Along?) and/or some bands at the top who are a little bit more rare and have not played Newport (e.g., Bon Iver). It helped in previous years this need was met by the first announcement (Fleet Foxes, Flight of the Conchords) so that I could better appreciate the Courtneys when they were announced.
Not stressed! Not concerned or worried! I know NFF will deliver; or I wouldn’t have put my faith in them. Like I said, not trying to be a debbie downer either. (This is a time to celebrate that we’re into announcement season!) Just letting op336 know he’s/she’s not alone.
And taking full responsibility for my feels. Either because I’m now a cranky old man or because I’ve reverted back into an emo kid thanks to taking two years off from NFF and instead hitting up Riot Fest.

Nah, you guys have a right to feel a bit hesitant if you want. I just think the last few years I've also had the feeling at one point of "Seems like a lot of repeats" and then by the end I'm always blown away at some of the things that you can ONLY see at Newport. Plus, all the extra stuff like in the museum stage and pop-up shows around.
Since Dr. Dog played last year, I'm really interested in Josh Ritter and Old Crow
Seems like theres only ever a handful of crossovers each year, and normally acts lower down the lineup, but idk if that's deliberate or not. Would also be down for both of those. Josh Ritter's one of those names I've been waiting to see at Newport since I started going.
Milk Carton Kids are opening a few shows for John Prine. Looks like they may be starting a tour again.
I need to see them again. Couldn't catch them the last time they came through NYC.
Yeah it's been a while. I was lucky enough to see them perform their last album at Electric Lady Studio and had a long chat with one of them about Newport afterwards. Don't think I've seen them since.
